Spirit is Yin, the heavy and turbid Qi, attached to the physical heart of the mortal. The soul likes to move and is life; the spirit keeps quiet and looks toward death. Refining away the Yin spirit is Pure Yang."

Cheng Cheng Xinzhan was shocked upon hearing this. It is true that the soul is Yang and the spirit is Yin, and it is true that the soul moves and the spirit is quiet, but is it a bit extreme to refine away all the spirit because of this? He asked,

"Master, disciple may have misunderstood before. Is this Pure Yang to refine 'Yang' to the extreme, or to completely eliminate 'Yin'? If it is to completely eliminate 'Yin', is it a bit extreme?"

Wen Daoist Sukong looked at her disciple with great approval. She nodded and said, "Regarding the Pure Yang method, there are four things I want to tell you."

Cheng Cheng Xinzhan listened respectfully.

"First, although the Pure Yang Path we inherited from the Upper Immortal Zhongli at Mount Mount Mingyue also requires refining Yin dregs, it hasn't reached the level of refining away the Yin spirit and leaving only the Yang soul. So, whether the refining method of completely discarding the Yin spirit proposed in 'The Purpose of Taiyi Golden Flower' was written by Lu Zu himself, or by his descendants or disciples under his name, is unknown."

"Second, as the saying goes, listening to both sides makes one clear, and believing only one side makes one dark. The Pure Yang Great Dao is not the only true path. Asking you to learn Pure Yang doesn't mean asking you to discard everything you learned before and keep only Pure Yang."

"Third, 'The Purpose of Taiyi Golden Flower' is still an extremely profound Dharma canon. Its discussions on the Heavenly Heart, Returning Light, Primordial Spirit, and Consciousness Spirit can be said to be pearls of wisdom. The theory and cultivation method of the three treasures of essence, Qi, and spirit being placed on the five elements to form the three phases of essence water, spirit fire, and intent earth are groundbreaking. I think this one method alone is enough to open a sect. Even the method of refining away the Yin spirit taught in the book is infinitely mysterious. Although you don't have to practice it, you can draw inferences from it. At the very least, you can refine the three souls and seven spirits and sweep away private thoughts."

"Fourth, our Mount Mount Mingyue's methods regarding corpse-raising and soul-raising are biased toward Yin. Over time, it is not good for the spirit or the body. Therefore, for Mount Mount Mingyue disciples, the Pure Yang method is more like a body-protecting method. Pure Yang in the heart preserves the primordial spirit from being extinguished, and practicing Yin methods naturally has no scruples. This is also a kind of Yin-Yang harmony."

"This 'Pure Yang Annotation and Derivative Methods' is the insight of the ancestors of Mount Mount Mingyue through the ages. Study it well."
