Chapter 37: Yan Bu Gui, you've got some nerve, actually daring to steal watermelons!

~7 min read 1,355 words

Lin Shengli no longer stood on ceremony, counted ten big unity bills, together with a stack of tickets, and handed them all to Yan Bu Gui.

"San Da Ye, this is one hundred yuan, plus some tickets, mostly industrial coupons."

"You can buy as you see fit, don't worry about the price."

"If the money isn't enough, I'll make up the difference for you."

"Otherwise, you can come back and ask me for more."

Buying pots, pans, bowls and basins is indeed a hassle, and you might not be able to finish buying everything in one trip.

You'll either miss this or miss that.

Having Yan Bu Gui help is the best.

At worst, I'll give him a watermelon or some cherries later.

Anyway, there's still plenty of that in my space.

I can only give watermelons and cherries; nothing else can be given, those are rare items.

He helps me buy things, I give him a labor fee, so we owe each other nothing.

Yan Bu Gui happily took it and said:

"Good, good, good; if I don't use it all, I'll return it to you."

"By then I'll also take back the receipt; I won't keep your money or tickets."

Lin Shengli laughed and said: "San Da Ye, you're joking."

"Who is San Da Ye, how could he do something so laughable?"

"Right, San Da Ye, please also help me buy a fruit knife and a kitchen knife."

Yan Bu Gui: "Certainly."

"Whatever a household needs, I'll buy it for you."

"I'll make sure everything is complete; rest assured."

"I'll go home first, call up Jiecheng, and have him come with me."

"By then there will be quite a lot of stuff, awkward to carry."

Lin Shengli nodded: "Then thank you for the trouble, San Da Ye."

Yan Bu Gui: "No problem, no problem; helping new residents is my duty and obligation."

Lin Shengli smiled and said nothing.

He certainly knew Yan Bu Gui wouldn't be that kind-hearted.

What kind of person Yan Bu Gui is, he understands better than anyone.

However, this person does have a redeeming quality: he has never harmed anyone.

He just likes to scheme and take advantage of things.

It must be said, Yan Bu Gui's work efficiency is still quite high.

In less than an hour, he was back.

He had bought back almost all the daily necessities and kitchenware.

"'Shengli, the total came to 96.3 yuan, using twenty-three industrial coupons.'"

"'This is the receipt, and this is the remaining money and tickets; please check them.'"

Lin Shengli: "No need; don't employ those you suspect, don't suspect those you employ."

"'Thank you, San Da Ye; you've really helped me a lot.'"

Yan Bu Gui grinned, his eyes fixed on the three big watermelons in the corner of the room.

He swallowed hard, a dry gulp.

He almost let the saliva drip out.

Such a big watermelon must be delicious.

Yan Jiecheng, upon entering, never took his eyes off the watermelon.

As for Lin Shengli, he grew ever more envious and jealous.

That's awesome!

College student, leader, engineer......

He suddenly hated himself, why was he so stupid?

If he had gotten into college and become an engineer, then Lin Shengli's current treatment would be his.

Not only is the salary high, there's also a house, and even rare watermelons are available.

The last time their family ate watermelon was several years ago, when Yi Zhonghai gave them a piece.

A second time? Never.

There's no way; nowadays just being able to fill one's stomach is good enough, yet they still want fruit.

Seeing the father and son staring at the watermelon, Lin Shengli asked:

"'Have you ever seen such a big watermelon?'"

Yan Bu Gui shook his head like a rattle drum:

"'No, no, it's huge, it must be delicious.'"

Saying that, he again swallowed hard.

Yan Jiecheng: "Shengli, where did you get such big, many watermelons?"

Lin Shengli: "Oh, someone gave them to me."

"'Take one home.'"

Yan Bu Gui widened his eyes: "What?"

Yan Jiecheng then let out an excited "ah", waddled over, picked up a watermelon, and exclaimed:

"It must be twenty or thirty catties, Dad—we've struck it rich!"

Yan Bu Gui still couldn't quite believe it: "Shengli, you, you're saying this watermelon is for us?"

Lin Shengli: "Hmm, go ahead—this is your reward for helping me buy things."

Yan Bu Gui instantly beamed, unable to close his mouth.

Yan Jiecheng: "Thanks, Shengli, thanks, Shengli."

"Well, then we'll head back first."

Lin Shengli nodded.

Yan Jiecheng muttered as he walked out:

"Dad, Shengli is even more generous than Eldest Uncle."

Yan Bu Gui shushed, then, as soon as they stepped out of Lin Shengli's front door, he suddenly reached out to snatch the watermelon from Yan Jiecheng's arms.

Yan Jiecheng hurriedly dodged, dissatisfied: "Hey hey, no snatching!"

"This is what Shengli gave us—we each get half."

Yan Bu Gui: "No way, I took on this job, so I at least deserve two-thirds."

Yan Jiecheng exclaimed: "Dad, you can't be that ruthless!"

"It's true you took the job, but the heavy lifting is mine."

"If I weren't following you, could you carry all this stuff back yourself?"

"How about we sell it and split the money fifty-fifty?"

Yan Bu Gui thought for a moment, nodded, and asked:

"Who do you think we should sell it to?"

Yan Jiecheng: "Let's first find a place to discuss this properly."

"Don't let the liberation people see us."

Yan Bu Gui: "Ah, let's go, let's go."

"Nobody should talk about this."

"But I want to take a bigger share of the money."

Yan Jiecheng objected: "What for?"

"We both did the work, so it should be split evenly—that's fair."

As his words fell, suddenly there appeared something very hard.

He looked up to see the Deaf Old Lady already standing before them, though he didn't know when she had arrived.

Both of them jumped in fright.

Yan Bu Gui raised his hand and lightly patted his chest, smiling apologetically:

"Old lady, how do you walk without making a sound?"

"You gave me a start."

The Deaf Old Lady snorted and questioned: "What are you two sneaking around doing?"

Saying this, she pointed her cane at the big watermelon in Yan Jiecheng's arms and asked:

"Whose watermelon is this?"

Yan Jiecheng broke into a grin: "Old lady, it's ours."

Deaf Old Lady: "Yours?"

"Just based on you two?"

"You could even have a watermelon?"

Yan Jiecheng grew somewhat displeased: "Old lady, don't underestimate us—how could we not have a watermelon?"

The Deaf Old Lady glanced at Lin Shengli's front door, raised her voice: "Sneaking around, huh—Yan Bu Gui, you've got guts!"

"Come clean—did you steal this from Shengli?"

Yan Bu Gui nervously glanced at his own tightly shut front door, smiling apologetically: "Old lady, old lady, keep it down a bit."

"This, this is what Shengli gave us."

Just then, Lin Shengli walked out.

"Old lady, this watermelon is indeed what I gave them."

The Deaf Old Lady let out an "oh" and said nothing.

Lin Shengli continued: "Old lady, people have given me several watermelons."

"San Da Ye helped me buy things, so I gave him one."

Deaf Old Lady: "You're being way too generous."

"Just for buying some stuff, you give him a big watermelon."

"And you, San Da Ye, actually have the nerve to take it."

Yan Bu Gui gave an embarrassed chuckle: "I don't even want it, but Shengli is so enthusiastic he insists on giving it to me."

Yan Jiecheng chimed in: "Right, right, right, old lady, that's exactly how it is."

"Shengli simply has to give it to us."

Lin Shengli: "Old lady, that's exactly right—they helped me buy things, I give them a watermelon, and we're even."

The Deaf Old Lady nodded and said: "Good, great—we can't owe them anything."

Lin Shengli: "Please wait a moment, I'll go get a watermelon, then we'll go to my aunt's house."

Deaf Old Lady: "Your uncle's gone to work, your aunt went to the Pigeon Market to buy chicken and pork, and she hasn't come back yet."
