Chapter 1065: Roadblocks

~10 min read 1,803 words

Hu Bayi squinted his eyes at the two black dots in the sky that were getting closer and closer, and shouted to He Yuzhu: "Master He, these Government Army troops are really fast; they actually discovered our tracks!"

He Yuzhu smiled: "Isn't this exactly what we wanted? How about this: you four hide in the Cave first, and I'll ride a motorcycle a few kilometers ahead to lure these two pieces of scrap metal far away, then I'll come back. By then, we'll be able to start our return journey."

Hu Bayi's brows knitted into a knot: "You don't even have a Rocket Launcher in your hands, what are you going to use to go head-to-head with them?"

He Yuzhu walked over to a motorcycle: "I'm just luring them away; I don't necessarily have to shoot them down."

Hu Bayi stared at him for two seconds, shook his head slightly, and stopped trying to persuade him: "Fine, I'll listen to you. We'll stay here and hide in place, waiting for you to return."

He Yuzhu kicked off the ground, and the mud-covered motorcycle shot out like an arrow from a bow.

Wang Pangzi squatted on a large rock inside the Cave and said: "Hu, you say, with Master He's skills, if he hadn't retired from the military back then, wouldn't he be carrying at least a few stars on his shoulders by now?"

Hu Bayi also squatted down, unscrewed a bottle of water, and took a sip: "Master He is the type of person who is too unruly by nature. If he had really stayed in the military, he might not have climbed very high, and even if he had been promoted, he would have fallen sooner or later."

Wang Pangzi laughed: "You're right about that. Look at him, he just decided to go off on his own; in the military, that's typical individual heroism!"

While the two were talking, the motorcycle He Yuzhu was riding had already gone quite a distance, the roar of the engine sounding particularly piercing in the valley.

Two armed helicopters finally locked onto this motorcycle.

The people on board kept shouting through a megaphone; He Yuzhu couldn't understand a word, so he just twisted the throttle to the end and rode faster and faster.

Not long after, the helicopters suddenly dipped their noses and dived rapidly.

The Machine Guns opened fire immediately, the bullets sweeping up a trail of smoke, dust, and gravel on the ground.

But He Yuzhu's riding posture was wobbly, dodging left and right like a loach, weaving back and forth on the winding mountain road, and the bullets never managed to hit him.

Even the bullets that were about to land on him were all collected into his space.

The Machine Guns of the two helicopters barely stopped, but they just couldn't do anything to him.

A ridiculous chase ensued: a motorcycle racing through the mountains, two helicopters skimming the peaks and firing continuously, yet failing to touch a hair on the person or the vehicle.

They chased for over ten miles of mountain road like this, and still didn't even graze a single hair of He Yuzhu.

He Yuzhu didn't want to drag it out any longer; he slammed on the brakes, stopped the motorcycle, and took a Stinger Missile out of his space.

The first helicopter was pressing close to the valley in hot pursuit, the muzzle flashes of its Machine Gun flickering constantly as a rain of bullets poured toward He Yuzhu.

He Yuzhu pulled the trigger, and a Rocket whistled out, flying right into the nose of the helicopter.

With a muffled boom, an orange-red fireball exploded in mid-air, and the aircraft wreckage, wreathed in black smoke, plummeted toward the valleys on both sides.

Debris rained down all around him, but he ignored it completely and quickly shouldered the second Stinger.

Half a second later, the second helicopter panicked and pulled up, trying to escape the valley.

He Yuzhu's missile broke through the air once more.

This shot didn't hit the cockpit, but the helicopter seemed to have its spine snapped, spinning as it crashed into the mountain wall on the left.

The belly of the aircraft scraped hard against the rock, sparking a trail of fire, followed by a boom as it slammed heavily into the pile of rocks at the bottom of the valley.

He Yuzhu had no time to look at the tragic sight of the two burning planes; he twisted the throttle to the max, and the motorcycle darted forward another few miles.

Only after confirming there was no more sound of pursuit behind him did he slam on the brakes and stop.

He put the motorcycle he had been riding into his space and took out a military-green sidecar motorcycle of the Burmese Army style.

The paint on the body was mottled and old, and the sidecar was even wrapped in a few withered vines for camouflage; it looked no different from a discarded wreck on the side of the road, but once started, the engine was muffled and powerful, showing it had been well-maintained.

When He Yuzhu returned to the starting point, Hu Bayi and Wang Pangzi were standing at the entrance of the cave, anxiously looking into the distance.

Hu Bayi was full of disbelief: "Master He! Those two planes, did you really shoot them down?"

He Yuzhu deliberately put on a look of lingering fear: "You didn't see it; those two planes had run out of bullets and kept strafing me. It was only thanks to my solid riding skills that I reached a bend, where I used a sniper rifle to hit both pilots, causing the planes to lose control and crash into the mountain wall."

The few of them heard this and mostly believed it. After all, He Yuzhu was carrying a sniper rifle on his back.

Wang Pangzi climbed onto the motorcycle: "Master He, should we head back now?"

He Yuzhu nodded: "Just about. If the enemy still doesn't believe it, I have no other way."

Wang Pangzi pointed to the back seat: "Finally, we don't have to carry Brother Xu to travel; hurry up and get on, don't wait for me to have to carry you."

Xu Damao shook his head like a rattle-drum: "I'm not sitting on your bike! You ride like it's a roller coaster; I want to sit on Zhuzi's."

He Yuzhu nodded, watched Xu Damao sit in the sidecar, and twisted the throttle to the end. The three-wheeled motorcycle lurched forward, and Xu Damao let out an 'ow' as he was jolted in the sidecar, hurriedly gripping the handle tightly.

"Zhuzi, can you consider the feelings of the person riding?" Xu Damao complained.

"Hu's bike is the steadiest, why don't you switch over?" He Yuzhu asked in return.

Xu Damao refused to switch no matter what; he knew clearly in his heart that following He Yuzhu was more reliable than following anyone else.

Meanwhile, in a temporary command post dozens of miles away, General Samba listened to his subordinates' reports one after another, his brows knitting tighter and tighter.

He paced back and forth in front of the sand table with his hands behind his back.

A Staff Officer spoke cautiously: "General, in my opinion, this group should have already retreated toward Shan State; we should send reinforcements to set up defenses there."

Samba stopped pacing and shook his head: "I always feel that this group might make a surprise counterattack and slip away by sea."

The Staff Officer was stunned and said with a fawning smile: "General, that possibility isn't very high, is it? If they wanted to leave, they would have gone to the seaside long ago. After killing so many of our men, why would they turn back?"

Samba still shook his head: "It's hard to say; this premonition of mine is getting stronger."

The smile on the Staff Officer's face froze, and after pondering for a moment, he said: "If they really turn back, I think there's a high probability they will cross the Thailand border. Should we notify the Thai side and ask them to assist in the interception?"

Samba still shook his head: "It's useless. They won't go to great lengths for us; Thailand relies on tourism, and if the border becomes chaotic, their economy will be finished."

The Staff Officer said: "Then we'll send troops to guard the border to the death."

Samba leaned back in his chair with his hands behind his back and sighed: "The war in Shan State is getting fiercer, especially those drones; they are simply impossible to guard against. Small things that don't cost much can destroy our million-dollar Tanks. The Great General has already lost his temper several times; if we can't even catch a few people like this, we'll all have to pack up and go home to farm."

The Staff Officer said: "General, have you ever thought about just letting this group go?"

Samba replied: "We can't let them go; the CIA is still pressuring the Great General."

The Staff Officer continued: "Then we'll just keep a tight watch on the surface, while turning a blind eye in secret and letting them go. I've already asked the soldiers who retreated; there's someone in that group who strikes extremely ruthlessly—in a large pit, he directly blew up four or five hundred of our brothers. I'm really afraid of provoking him."

Samba pondered for a moment: "What you say makes some sense. Since we predict they will take the water route, let's withdraw all the checkpoints in the direction of Shan State."

The room was quiet for two seconds, and the Staff Officer nodded heavily: "Yes, General, I will go arrange it now."

He Yuzhu could never have dreamed that if they had just kept traveling straight ahead, there would likely have been no more obstacles on the road.

It was a pity he was not a prophet.

The group hurried back for over an hour and arrived at the first checkpoint upon leaving the mountains.

Before everyone could even heave a sigh of relief, they saw five dilapidated trucks parked horizontally in the middle of the road, leaving only a narrow passage barely wide enough for one vehicle to pass.

A dozen or so Government Army soldiers with their shirts unbuttoned were huddled under a sun umbrella, gnawing on popsicles and paying no mind to the passing vehicles and pedestrians.

Hu Bayi cursed in a low voice, "Damn, they really are blocking us here."

He Yuzhu rode his motorcycle slowly forward and reached into his pocket to pull out one thousand US dollars.

A man who looked like an officer approached, "Which unit are you from?"

He Yuzhu handed over the US dollars and spoke in English, "We are..."
