Chapter 367: The Story Behind the Little Song
Half an hour later, the cars drove onto the rugged mountain road.
Liu Rusi sat in the car, looking anxiously toward the rear: "Pingping, keep a close eye on the back. Once those people catch up, we must go up and help—I don't trust those few men!"
Pingping frowned and said: "What exactly is Sister Zhao Ying thinking? How could she send six such unreliable guys?"
Liu Rusi shook her head: "She was taken away by the Police Department, how could she arrange it personally? It must have been her subordinates who dispatched them at the last minute."
"That guy in the gold suit looks just like a clown, why does he keep coming over to talk to you?" Pingping curled her lip.
"Although he talks a lot, some of it makes sense," Liu Rusi said softly.
"Sister, you've really become more and more Zen lately."
Liu Rusi only gave a bitter smile and did not reply.
The mountain road wound along, and the two motorcades chased madly, both having floored the accelerators; every sharp turn of the wheels hugged the cliff edge, thrilling and perilous.
As the lead car, He Yuzhu slammed on the brakes as soon as he rounded a sharp bend, simultaneously blowing a shrill whistle.
The five trucks behind followed suit and braked. Martin and the others jumped out of the vehicles with agility, quickly adjusted the vehicle formation, and then, like well-trained cheetahs, vaulted onto the truck beds, hoisted the modified Bazooka Rocket Launchers, loaded, aimed, and completed the actions in one smooth motion.
Liu Rusi saw the six vehicles stop suddenly in the rearview mirror, and her heart tightened: "What are those bastards doing? Everyone stop!"
The four sedans braked hard in succession.
Liu Rusi drew her gun and pushed open the door, rushing toward the trucks with her thirteen subordinates who were getting out one after another.
"Sister! You just wait in the car!" Pingping shouted in a low voice.
"Don't talk nonsense, follow me!" Liu Rusi said without looking back.
At this moment, the trailing agent vehicles had just rounded the bend and suddenly saw the trucks ahead stopped, so they braked in a panic—
But before they could come to a steady stop, several Rockets had already whistled out from the rear of the trucks!
"Whoosh—Boom!!!"
The successive explosions were deafening; the first, middle, and last vehicles of the pursuing motorcade were blown over upon impact, tumbling into the cliff.
Immediately following was a second volley, and the vehicles in the middle were also hit one after another.
Although some jumped out of the cars in a panic, the mountain road was narrow and flames swept through, so most were still swallowed up.
Liu Rusi stopped abruptly, looking at the sea of fire before her, a look of relief finally appearing on her face.
Pingping widened her eyes: "Miss, those black men... they really weren't bragging!"
Before the flames had died out, six vehicle-mounted Machine Guns roared simultaneously, spraying a rain of bullets at the agents who had luckily escaped.
When there was no one left standing, He Yuzhu led Martin and the others, holding Submachine Guns, to step forward quickly and finish off the twitching figures on the ground one by one.
When Liu Rusi and her people arrived, the battlefield had already been cleared, and over forty agents lay dead on the mountain road.
He Yuzhu raised his hand and ordered: "Everyone give a hand, throw the corpses into the sea to feed the fish."
Liu Rusi walked over and asked: "Where are the five Experts?"
"In the truck in the middle. Miss Zhao arranged a boat; it's best to send them to the mainland today."
"How can we send them in broad daylight?" Liu Rusi asked.
He Yuzhu glanced at the sky and said: "We will go to Henglan Island first, wait on the island, and leave after nightfall. Otherwise, if so many of us return to the city, we will definitely be suspected."
Liu Rusi nodded in agreement.
He Yuzhu handed the five Experts over to Liu Rusi, then jumped into the lead car himself and led the team toward Henglan Island.
After another half hour or so, the motorcade arrived at the shore opposite Henglan Island.
He Yuzhu parked the truck by a gentle slope, walked more than a mile away alone, released the modified speedboat from his space, drove the boat back to pick everyone up, and headed toward the island.
Pingping stood beside He Yuzhu, who was steering the boat, and couldn't help asking: "What is your boat made of? How is it so fast!"
"It's been modified," He Yuzhu answered briefly.
The hull rushed onto the shallows of Henglan Island; He Yuzhu jumped into the water, secured the boat with long iron nails, and set up a gangplank.
"There are still five or six hours until dark, everyone go up to the island and rest. I'll go get some fish," He Yuzhu said.
Before long, he had used a fishing net to catch quite a few crabs and sea bass.
The group sat around a campfire, chatting in low voices in twos and threes.
Liu Rusi sat to the side talking with the Experts, but Pingping kept hovering around He Yuzhu—her eyes were full of curiosity, always feeling that every move this person made was inexplicably familiar.
He Yuzhu turned his head and teased her in broken Yue Cuisine: "Little brother, you aren't tall, but your chest muscles are quite developed."
Pingping glared at him fiercely, so angry that she turned and walked away.
He Yuzhu laughed to himself: "You're still too green to fight with me."
He stuck a dozen grilled fish into the sand, and to liven up the dead-silent atmosphere, he raised his voice: "There are many people and few fish; whoever wants to eat the first round must perform a show. Only if everyone agrees can you eat first."
Pingping cursed: "Get lost! Putting on airs just for grilling some fish!"
Liu Rusi gently pulled her sleeve: "Don't say that, if it weren't for them today, we would have been in grave danger."
Pingping leaned into her ear and muttered in a low voice: "Sister, that black guy in the gold suit... actually said my chest muscles are big."
Liu Rusi couldn't help it and laughed until her eyes curved.
At this time, Martin suddenly stood up and gestured: "I'll do an impromptu rap!"
He danced while singing, the rhythm lively, but no one could understand it.
After finishing, he grinned: "How about it? Can I pass? I want to eat the first fish!" That comical appearance amused everyone.
"Eat, eat!" Everyone laughed and applauded.
"How about letting this Brother Liu sing a song too?" He Yuzhu looked at Liu Rusi.
Before Liu Rusi could speak, Pingping got anxious first: "Why should she?"
"Because we just blocked the pursuers, is that reason enough?" He Yuzhu asked with a smile.
Liu Rusi stood up and cupped her hands: "Many thanks to you brothers for your help today. I'll make a fool of myself and sing 'The Whole River Red'."
"Good!" Everyone applauded one after another.
She lightly touched her lips with her fingertips, took a deep breath, and began to sing: "My hair bristles in anger, leaning against the railing, the pattering rain ceases. I lift my eyes to gaze, looking up to the sky and whistling long, my heroic spirit burning with intensity..."
Though the singing was not robust, it possessed an inherent, awe-inspiring spirit.
As the song ended, applause broke out once more.
He Yuzhu handed over a piece of grilled sea bass. Liu Rusi took it and bit into it; her pupils constricted slightly, and her gaze remained fixed firmly on He Yuzhu.
He Yuzhu shifted his gaze away and shoved another fish toward Pingping: "Little brother, this one is for you."
Pingping was stunned: "I didn't even perform, why give it to me?"
"I just wanted to ask, your pectoral muscles... how did you train them?"
"Get lost!" Pingping finally exploded.
Liu Rusi sneered and took over the conversation: "This brother in the gold suit has been grilling fish for so long, he should rest. How about we have him sing a rap too, what do you think?"
He Yuzhu shook his head with a grin: "I don't know how."
Pingping jeered: "If you don't know how, then bark like a dog!"
He Yuzhu feigned helplessness: "Fine, then I'll sing a little ditty."
"Good! Good! Good!" Several Experts also began to clap with great interest.
He Yuzhu cleared his throat, pinched his voice, and sang in a feminine tone, eerily: "I have a story of love, to sing for you gentlemen to hear, gentlemen, please calm your hearts, let us sing a Wuxi Scenery..."
Although it did not sound very good, to Liu Rusi, it had a unique flavor; as she listened, her eyes gradually grew moist.
She suddenly understood—the "black man" before her was He Yuzhu. And he was hinting that she was the one who had been unfaithful.
Because she had only ever told him that her mother had sung this very ditty back in the day before she and Shen Shichang got together. Later, Shen Shichang killed her mother...
Memories surged in like a tide: the image of her mother combing her hair and braiding it while humming softly seemed as if it were only yesterday...
She slowly stood up and walked toward the seaside, letting her tears fall silently.
