Chapter 544: Fierce Battle in the Wilderness
He Yuzhu turned the roasted rabbit over the fire, the grease dripping into the flames with a sizzling sound.
He looked up at the two people opposite him: "Vasili, Nina, can you eat spicy food?"
"Just a little bit is fine," Nina said immediately.
Vasili nodded and said, "I can handle spice."
The flames flickered, and the rabbit's skin gradually turned golden and crispy.
He Yuzhu placed the roasted rabbit onto a wooden board, sliced the meat, took several flatbreads out of his large backpack, put the rabbit meat inside, tasted it, felt it lacked flavor, and took out a bottle of homemade sauce to add some.
Vasili took the wrap and took a big bite, his eyes lighting up instantly: "Little He, your skill is truly superb!"
"I was a cook to begin with," He Yuzhu smiled.
Nina widened her eyes and exchanged an incredulous look with Vasili—they had privately speculated about He Yuzhu's identity; Vasili suspected he was a secret agent, while Nina thought he looked like a notorious bandit, but neither had expected him to say he was a cook.
Su Qing leaned against the Buick and chimed in with a smile: "He really isn't lying to you. If you have the chance, you'll know he wasn't lying once you taste the food he makes!"
He Yuzhu took out four bottles of beer, bit the caps off with his teeth, and handed them to everyone.
Nina raised her bottle: "Thank God, we've made it through another day safely; may tomorrow be just as good!"
Before the words had even faded, He Yuzhu kicked out twice, knocking both Nina and Vasili to the ground!
"Bang, bang, bang—"
Gunfire tore through the silence of the night, bullets whizzing past the spot where they had just been.
He Yuzhu took the opportunity to roll and hide behind a small mound.
With a thought, a Mosin-Nagant Sniper Rifle was already in his hands.
The moment they hit the ground, Vasili and Nina understood that the enemy had come to ambush them.
Both reacted extremely quickly; Vasili rolled over to grab his M1SubmachineGun, while Nina drew the Colt 1911 from her waist.
He Yuzhu's gun barrel glinted in the night.
Pfft!
The soldier running in the lead collapsed at the sound.
"Watch out! They have a sniper!" A squad leader holding an M3 Night Vision Device had just shouted when the second bullet pierced his skull.
Until his death, he could not understand how this ambush, which should have been a sure thing, had resulted in him becoming the second person to fall.
"Pfft!" After the third gunshot, the soldier responsible for communications beside the squad leader was also taken down.
In just one short minute, three men were dead. The squad immediately fell into disarray; a new recruit scrambled up in terror, wanting to flee, but was struck in the back by He Yuzhu and fell heavily.
The remaining soldiers scrambled to crawl and find cover. One unlucky fellow was bitten hard by a venomous snake while crawling, jumped up screaming, and instantly became He Yuzhu's fourth target.
"Bang, bang, bang!" The remaining enemies fired wildly at the mound, sending dust flying with their bullets.
Su Qing had been leaning against the Buick eating; as soon as he saw the enemy ambush, he flattened himself against the wheel, still holding his flatbread.
He Yuzhu used the mound for cover, firing while changing positions; he discovered there was also a sniper on the other side with extremely seasoned technique.
The night wind, carrying the smell of gunpowder and blood, permeated the air.
"Captain Mills is dead! Listen to me now!" Deputy Captain Baker shouted: "Don't panic! I'm requesting air support immediately! You all keep firing, just hold on for half an hour."
This twelve-man squad was one of over a hundred patrol groups on Route 66, responsible for patrolling a fifty-kilometer stretch. They had intercepted a passing vehicle and, hearing there were people camping by the road, thought they would come over to make some extra money, never expecting to kick an iron plate.
He Yuzhu had long since seen someone go to grab the radio equipment; his muzzle quietly shifted toward the side of the dead squad leader.
"Everyone keep firing, the rescue team is coming!" Baker crawled toward the captain's corpse.
"Pfft!"
The bullet entered through the side of his ear, and Baker's voice came to an abrupt end.
Vasili watched He Yuzhu snipe the enemies one by one, but because his submachine gun lacked the range, he grew anxious and pounded the ground with his fist in frustration.
Su Qing leaned leisurely against the back of the Buick, continuing to gnaw on his wrap—he knew all too well that these dozen or so people were no match at all.
With five men down in succession, the remaining soldiers completely lost their nerve; they fired without even looking at their targets, simply wasting ammunition.
He Yuzhu crouched and moved to Vasili's side, saying: "We need to end this quickly. You use this rifle to keep suppressing them, and I'll circle around from the flank."
Vasili's eyes lit up; he took the sniper rifle and said: "I know how to use this thing, go ahead."
He Yuzhu darted out like a cheetah, quickly maneuvering through the ditch beside the road; his speed was astonishing, and in less than thirty seconds, he had snuck to within a hundred meters of the enemy's flank.
He continued to run fast, closing in on the enemy.
At fifty meters, he suddenly raised his submachine gun and unleashed a spray of bullets!
Four enemies fell into a pool of blood before they could even react.
Now on the battlefield, only one soldier hiding in a dirt hole remained, along with a cunning sniper who kept changing positions.
The sniper was very experienced; he kept moving between rocks and bushes, shooting at He Yuzhu whenever he had the chance, posing a great threat.
He Yuzhu leaned against a rock and, with a "click," swapped in a new magazine.
He could not afford to stay in a stalemate with that sniper; the longer the night, the more trouble, and it would be problematic if their reinforcements arrived.
Thinking of this, He Yuzhu unexpectedly rushed out from behind the large rock, moving rapidly toward the sniper's flank.
The sniper hiding behind the mound fell for it; he suddenly poked half his body out, his muzzle moving rapidly.
But He Yuzhu was faster than him.
"Da-da-da—!"
The submachine gun spat out a fierce tongue of fire, and the bullets drew several fleeting red lines in the night sky.
Before the sniper could even pull the trigger, his body was struck by several bullets, and he fell to the ground, never to rise again.
At this moment, Vasili also rushed over from the front; he was experienced and checked the corpses on the ground one by one, firing a follow-up shot with an expressionless face at any who weren't quite dead.
He Yuzhu activated the Scanning System and scanned the surroundings, discovering a scrawny white soldier hiding in a hole dug by some unknown animal.
He dragged the man out directly, and the man trembled all over, saying: "Don't kill me! Don't kill me!"
He Yuzhu asked: "Who are you people? Why did you attack us?"
"We are from the National Guard, there are over a hundred patrol squads on this highway... We are catching a group of Su Guo spies who robbed a bank, the captain has their photos on him!" the thin white soldier said incoherently.
"Congratulations! You found the right person!" He Yuzhu quipped.
Upon hearing this, Vasili quickly ran to the person holding the M3 Infrared Sniper System, swiftly took a photo from him, and upon seeing the photo, he was shocked; he walked over and handed the photo to He Yuzhu, saying, "Little He, they know Nina's identity, what should we do?"
He Yuzhu said indifferently, "So what? Rest assured, I can get you out of M Country."
Hearing this, Vasili felt much more at ease; he wasn't actually truly afraid, he just wanted to test Little He to see if he wanted to separate from them. Now it seemed that Little He was indeed a person of responsibility, and he was completely relieved.
"Vasili," Zhuzi glanced at the thin white soldier, "this person is useless, you handle him."
"Bang."
Vasili didn't say a word of nonsense and killed this person without hesitation.
He Yuzhu secretly admired his decisiveness; he knew that they couldn't leave any living witnesses at this time, but he really didn't want to kill this person with his own hands.
Vasili excitedly fiddled with the equipment captured from the captain's corpse—the M3 Infrared Sniper System and the matching Carbine. He wiped the lens, whispering in admiration, "Good stuff..."
"We cannot stay long." He Yuzhu said, looking at the highway in the distance.
Su Qing came out from behind the Buick and said, "Zhuzi, let's change into their clothes and drive their cars; as for our car, let's blow it up!"
He Yuzhu nodded: "Good! Let's be quick."
The few of them did not delay any longer and quickly stripped off a few sets of enemy uniforms that were still relatively clean and put them on.
He Yuzhu took a look at the Buick that had accompanied them for many days and placed a Hand Grenade near the fuel tank.
"Boom!" After the Hand Grenade exploded near the fuel tank, it quickly ignited a large fire.
The four of them split into two groups, drove the enemy's two off-road vehicles, and sped off toward the distance.
