Chapter 547: Escaping Death
Taking advantage of the moment of the explosion and the chaos on the battlefield, He Yuzhu quickly crawled out from a firing port, shouldered a loaded Bazooka rocket launcher, and pulled the trigger at a hovering helicopter.
"Boom!"
The rocket, trailing a plume of fire, lunged straight at its target, and the helicopter exploded into a fireball in mid-air.
The remaining two helicopters immediately turned around and launched a fierce attack toward He Yuzhu's position.
He Yuzhu, however, used the intricate network of tunnels to quickly shift to the rear of these two helicopters.
"Boom!"
Another rocket hit one of the armed helicopters.
After the explosion, the helicopter's parts scattered across the ground like falling flower petals.
The only remaining helicopter no longer dared to linger, quickly gained altitude, and retreated from the battlefield.
The soldiers, having lost their air superiority, became live targets for He Yuzhu.
After losing dozens of soldiers, the enemy finally reached the vicinity of He Yuzhu's tunnel.
That they were able to reach him was because He Yuzhu had intentionally let them; he did not want to continue trading shots with the enemy one by one.
Several enemy soldiers even crawled into the "tunnels" He Yuzhu had dug.
They did not expect that inside the tunnel, He Yuzhu was not relying on his eyes, but on his Scanning System.
He could see the enemy's position at a glance, yet the enemy could not find him at all.
The battle between the two sides in the tunnels became a one-sided slaughter by He Yuzhu; no matter how many enemies entered, they all died.
After dozens of soldiers entered the cave and were all killed, no one dared to go inside again.
He Yuzhu knew what the enemy would do next; they would certainly release tear gas.
However, he had long been prepared, having set up over a dozen High-explosive Explosives throughout the three-hundred-meter tunnel.
He walked to the end of the tunnel, blocked the exit, and then, using his Space Ability, quickly dug a tunnel toward the rear of the surrounding soldiers.
He Yuzhu poked his head out from a patch of ground and saw four or five hundred soldiers blocking all the firing ports of the tunnel, desperately throwing tear gas canisters inside, thinking He Yuzhu would surely suffocate to death in there.
No one knew that He Yuzhu was currently pressing the detonator button for the explosives.
"Boom, boom, boom, boom..." A continuous series of explosions rang out.
Those soldiers who were gathered at the tunnel entrance, laughing, were all blown into the air.
In an instant, that three-hundred-meter tunnel turned into a slaughterhouse.
The soldiers who were further away, though not killed by the blast, were covered in wounds and crawled toward the distance, wailing.
Ten rescue personnel quickly ran over to save the wounded, but were fiercely strafed by He Yuzhu with a Machine Gun.
Dozens of people soon fell into a pool of blood.
Seeing that most of the enemy were dead or wounded, He Yuzhu ran quickly toward the parking area.
On a piece of wild land stood a simple, large tent, inside which lay over a dozen soldiers wounded by the explosion, howling in pain.
Four military doctors were providing emergency aid; some were sawing off legs, some were extracting bullets, and some were bandaging wounds.
He Yuzhu saw two guards poking their heads about, seemingly unaware of what had happened on the front line, so he pretended to have a hoarse voice and shouted: "I've been shot in the shoulder, hurry up and help me!"
One guard waved his hand impatiently and said: "Damn it, if you can still walk, get lost and wait on the side!"
He Yuzhu did not stop his pace and continued walking toward the two guards; just as he was within ten meters of them, he moved his mind, and the two guards were instantly pulled into his space.
Immediately after, he ran toward the very back of the parking area, where five people were guarding an important vehicle; He Yuzhu guessed it should be an ammunition truck.
A soldier raised his gun and barked: "Don't come any closer!"
He Yuzhu shouted loudly: "Run quickly, everyone on the front line is dead!"
The five men looked at him in disbelief, and the soldier holding the gun lowered it.
But He Yuzhu did not want to let them go; with a flick of his wrist, two Mauser C96s appeared in his hands.
"Bang, bang, bang..." After a burst of gunfire, all five guards fell to the ground.
He Yuzhu opened the rear compartment of the vehicle, and it was full of ammunition crates; he smiled immediately—this battle had consumed quite a bit, and it was the perfect time to replenish his ammo. He moved his mind and directly pulled all this ammunition into his space.
He looked into the distance and found that there were not many living enemies left, then jumped onto the last truck, turned the vehicle around, and drove forward along the road.
The road was almost completely unobstructed, and no one stopped him at all.
After confirming that he had temporarily escaped danger, He Yuzhu released Su Qing, Nina, and Vasili from his space.
The few slowly woke up, looking around at the unfamiliar driver's cab and the wilderness speeding by outside the window.
Nina rubbed her temples and spoke first: "Little He, where have we arrived? What happened to those enemies?"
While driving, He Yuzhu briefly recounted what had happened; he omitted the details of his Space Ability, saying only that he had shot down a few helicopters and then disguised himself as a wounded soldier to escape during the chaos.
Although he spoke of it lightly, the others were still secretly impressed; under the heavy encirclement of the enemy, he had actually managed to escape without a single scratch.
When they looked at He Yuzhu again, their eyes held deep admiration.
Three hours after He Yuzhu left the battlefield, Detective Ke'er and General Kain arrived at the scene.
After repeated inspections and questioning, Ke'er found General Kain and said: "After investigation and evidence gathering, my conclusion is that the person who engaged these six hundred-plus soldiers was very likely just one individual."
Kain shook his head: "Absolutely impossible! Look at these intricate trenches; they could never have been dug by one person."
"But several wounded soldiers all recalled that it was done by one person; this person is particularly skilled at utilizing tunnels and explosives!" Ke'er said.
Kain called his confidant to his side and whispered an order: "Go and have those babbling wounded soldiers meet God!"
He looked at the bloody battlefield and said in a deep voice: "For the battle to have turned out like this, the opponent must be at least two hundred well-trained special forces troops."
Ke'er was still puzzled: "General, I can understand that you feel the tunnels weren't dug by one person, but the testimony of those wounded soldiers..." Before he could finish, he was interrupted by Major General Kain.
Kain stared at Ke'er with a sinister gaze: "This matter must be completely sealed off; even our superiors cannot be told."
Ke'er looked troubled: "But any detective who comes here will reach the same conclusion."
Kain suddenly smiled, his gaze sweeping over the unrecognizable remains of the soldiers blown up on the battlefield: "Those faceless soldiers can be counted as bandits. As for our missing soldiers, we will say they were captured by the enemy." He paused, then continued, "The investigation report must be written this way: the opponent had at least two hundred people, fifty of whom were killed, and the remaining personnel scattered and fled..."
Ke'er looked toward Kain, a flash of contempt passing through his eyes.
Kain caught this expression, his eyes suddenly turning cold, "If you leak even a hint of this, watch out for your life and the lives of your family."
Ke'er's expression changed again and again; after a long while, he lowered his gaze and said in a deep voice, "General, this time I will listen to you. However... where exactly did those people who broke through the encirclement go?"
Kain pondered for a moment and said slowly, "We can only report to our superiors that they have scattered and broken through, and may have infiltrated any city. With the few thousand men we currently have, we are already unable to track their whereabouts."
After hearing this, a meaningful smile appeared at the corner of Ke'er's mouth: "That is fine, General. Then I can return to New York... I will leave the writing of that report to you, and I will just sign it when the time comes."
