Chapter 564: Underground Treasure Hunt

~8 min read 1,515 words

He Yuzhu was about to go down into the tunnel with Yan Jiecheng and the other members of the Factory Protection Team, but Lv Hong insisted on following them no matter what.

He Yuzhu immediately warned her: "Have you thought this through? There are several dead bodies inside; it's quite ghastly."

Lv Hong sniffed and looked unconvinced: "Don't look down on people; I've participated in major battles!"

He Yuzhu cupped his hands and smiled: "A heroine who is no less than any man; it is I who was blind."

Lv Hong's cheeks flushed slightly.

More than a dozen people held torches and filed into the underground passage one by one.

As soon as Yan Jiecheng saw the corpse tied to the stone pillar, his stomach churned, and he vomited with a "blech."

Many of the Factory Protection Team members were veterans who had seen big scenes, so they remained relatively calm upon seeing a few dead bodies.

Lv Hong, however, approached without changing her expression to take a closer look, which made He Yuzhu frown; he did not linger and walked straight ahead, his mind preoccupied with one thought—had that black bear run away or not?

He activated the Scanning System and walked several hundred meters forward, but he did not detect any traces of the black bear, which made him breathe a slight sigh of relief.

An iron door blocked their path, and the sheet metal on the door had rotted away.

He kicked the iron door open, but the scene inside made his heart tighten.

This was a huge circular bunker; one wall was covered in firing ports of various sizes, and the walls and floor were covered in traces of having been scorched by a great fire.

"Ah!"

Yan Jiecheng let out a startled cry, giving everyone a fright, while he himself fell heavily to the ground.

He Yuzhu frowned and said: "Jiecheng, what on earth are you making a fuss about?"

Yan Jiecheng pointed tremblingly at a skull on the ground: "I, I stepped on a human bone..."

He Yuzhu held up his torch to illuminate the area and said in a low voice: "It seems the battle here was quite intense; the people inside were blown up and then burned again. How miserable."

He squatted down to sift through the ruins, digging out some gun barrels, shattered firearm parts, and the charred remains of wooden crates.

Lv Hong said with a smile: "You don't need to pity them; the ones who died were little devils, and it must have been the Soviet Red Army who blew them up!"

"How can you be sure?" He Yuzhu asked.

"The person tied to the pillar where we came down earlier—their bone frame was larger than ours!" Lv Hong said.

He Yuzhu finally understood and gave a thumbs up: "So the little devils captured the Soviet Red Army first, only to be retaliated against by their main force. These people left after the bombing and never came in to check."

Lv Hong nodded: "That is likely the case."

Yan Jiecheng recovered his composure and suddenly said urgently: "Zhuzi, didn't you say there was gold down here? I don't see anything, just a bunch of junk!"

He Yuzhu laughed: "Jiecheng, if you pick up this scrap metal from the floor, you can sell it for quite a bit of money at the Supply and Marketing Cooperative."

Yan Jiecheng's eyes lit up instantly: "But where would I get a sack!"

He Yuzhu shook his head helplessly: "You really never forget about getting rich. Don't be impatient; keep looking, maybe there's a secret warehouse."

He activated the Scanning System and continued walking forward along the narrow passage.

Lv Hong hurried to keep up: "Factory Director He, is there really a secret room inside?"

He Yuzhu nodded without speaking; after walking another two hundred meters or so, he tapped on the side rock wall and soon felt a protruding stone.

He pressed it hard, and the stone door actually slid open slowly!

Lv Hong's eyes widened in shock: "There really is a secret room?"

He Yuzhu speculated: "Our guess was correct; the Soviet Red Army main force must have pushed through and destroyed this outpost, and no one ever came in to clear the battlefield, so we've taken advantage of it."

Lv Hong nodded: "Hearing you put it that way, it does make sense."

He Yuzhu walked into the secret room; the space was not large, only about ten square meters, with several rows of rusted iron shelves against the wall.

He opened a large wooden crate, which was neatly stacked with Type 38 Arisakas, the gun bodies still coated in anti-rust oil; another crate contained Type 11 Light Machine Guns, along with over a dozen crates of canned goods and a large amount of medical supplies.

He Yuzhu did not lack these things; his gaze fell on the leather suitcases on the bottom layer, and upon opening them, he saw they were all thick leather notebooks, densely filled with Japanese and mathematical symbols.

He did not understand Japanese, but it looked like survey records.

Lv Hong picked one up, flipped through it, and said: "Factory Director He, these are the little devils' records for surveying oil in the Songliao Plain."

He Yuzhu asked curiously: "You can read Japanese?"

Lv Hong explained: "Don't you know? This area was Manchukuo back then, and everyone had to learn Japanese at that time."

He Yuzhu flipped through a few more: "Cadre Lv, are these all for oil surveying?"

Lv Hong nodded: "Although they surveyed for a long time, it seems there were no results."

The speaker had no intention, but the listener took it to heart!

He Yuzhu saw it clearly in his mind—it is now 1956, and the Oilfield has not yet been discovered! He had been worrying about not having a suitable excuse to bring this up to Secretary Liu; if these notebooks could be translated, could it allow the country to discover that great Oilfield in the Songliao Plain ahead of time and start using domestically produced oil sooner?

He turned to Lv Hong: "Section Chief Lv, can you find someone to translate these notebooks? I want to see how far their research went first."

Lv Hong smiled: "I'll help you translate them; it should take about five days to finish. You have to give me meat at every meal."

He Yuzhu was overjoyed: "No problem! Can we also take the guns here?"

Lv Hong immediately shook her head: "That is absolutely not allowed!"

He Yuzhu chuckled inwardly; he had plenty of guns in his space and didn't care for these old things at all. "I can at least take these survey records back to look at, right?"

Lv Hong smiled: "That's no problem! If you really find a big Oilfield, maybe I'll even be able to make a great contribution!"

Just then, the two people guarding the passage came scrambling back, their faces as pale as paper, shouting: "Monster! Monster!"

The two squeezed into the storage room like madmen, and the crowd instantly fell into chaos!

He Yuzhu understood in an instant—it was that black bear!

He quickly grabbed a Type 38 Arisaka from the crate, kicked open the wooden crate next to it, fished out a magazine, and skillfully pressed five bullets into the chamber!

Lv Hong was stunned by his crisp and efficient movements, and the others subconsciously dodged to both sides to clear a path.

Almost at the same time, a huge black shadow charged in wildly!

He Yuzhu raised his gun and fired—

"Bang!"

The bullet pierced straight through half of the black bear's head!

Yet this beast had a terrifyingly hard life; it didn't fall to the ground on the spot, but instead swung its palm toward He Yuzhu in a rage!

He Yuzhu dodged to the side narrowly, a Dagger appearing in his hand at some unknown moment, and he backhanded it fiercely into the black bear's eye socket!

"Awoo—!"

The black bear let out a shrill howl, and in its agony, it crashed toward the wall like a madman!

Yan Jiecheng was standing by the wall, and seeing the massive body pressing over, he shrieked in terror and curled into a ball.

The black bear slammed down heavily, pinning him directly underneath!

He Yuzhu raised his leg and delivered a fierce kick, actually sending the two or three-hundred-pound bear body flying away!

He immediately snatched up the Type 38 Arisaka, aimed at the black bear's head, and pulled the trigger again—

"Bang!"

This shot completely ended the beast's life!

In the narrow secret chamber, the man-versus-bear struggle just now had been heart-stopping, and everyone held their breath, no one daring to make a sound for a long while.

Yan Jiecheng had just walked through the gates of hell; when he crawled up, his face was deathly pale, and his legs were so weak he could barely stand.

He Yuzhu put away the gun, swept a glance at the crowd, and said in a deep voice, "Everyone get up, it's over."
