Chapter 38: Sihe Academy
Sihe Academy
Jia family
The five people were so hungry their stomachs were growling, tossing and turning, unable to sleep.
Because there were no more lunchboxes from Shazhu, the Jia family's standard of living plummeted.
One meal consisted of three steamed buns made of mixed flour and a pot of cornmeal porridge.
Banggeng and Jia Zhangshi each had one.
Qin Huairu, Xiaodang, and Huaihua shared one.
But even so, Banggeng and Jia Zhangshi were still hungry and uncomfortable.
"Qin Huairu, go find Shazhu and get some food."
Jia Zhangshi guarded against Shazhu like a thief, but she couldn't do without him.
Shazhu's lunchboxes had long since made Jia Zhangshi's mouth greedy.
Qin Huairu said gloomily: "Mom, Shazhu has been transferred away from the kitchen; he can't bring out any leftovers, and we won't find anything to eat if we go to his house."
Jia Zhangshi cursed: "Shazhu, that useless big fool, can't even keep his job as a cook; he's truly a waste and a fool."
Qin Huairu's stomach was also uncomfortably hungry, and she felt some resentment toward Shazhu in her heart.
He clearly had good culinary skills, but he just didn't know how to handle people, causing him to lose his kitchen job now.
The kitchen job didn't pay high wages, but it had many benefits and there was no shortage of food.
Jia Zhangshi shouted: "Then boil some more porridge; I'm really too hungry to stand it."
"Mom! I'm hungry!"
"Mom, I'm hungry too!"
"Huaihua's stomach hurts from hunger!"
Banggeng, Xiaodang, and Huaihua, the three children, begged because they were hungry.
Qin Huairu felt sad in her heart and stood up helplessly: "Alright, alright, I'll go boil porridge."
Arriving at the kitchen and looking at the bottom of the flour bag, tears welled up in Qin Huairu's eyes.
"Mom, should we endure it a bit longer? Our family only has one bowl of cornmeal left."
"If we finish it today, we won't have anything to eat tomorrow."
Jia Zhangshi stood up and cursed: "You useless broom star, can't you get more food back? You want to starve us to death so you can remarry, right!"
Being uncomfortably hungry, Jia Zhangshi's anger flared up.
When she married Qin Huairu into the family from the countryside back then, she wasn't happy, thinking that Qin Huairu, a village girl, wasn't worthy of her son.
But she couldn't help it because Qin Huairu was beautiful, her son liked her, and the bride price was low.
But who would have thought that not many years after they married, her son would have a work-related injury.
Jia Zhangshi believed that Qin Huairu had cursed her son to death.
She had been holding back her anger ever since.
Jia Zhangshi pointed at Qin Huairu: "I don't care what method you use; Banggeng and I cannot go hungry, or else you can just roll back to the countryside."
"Mom! My stomach is hungry!"
Banggeng didn't care about Qin Huairu's mood; he clutched his stomach, rolling around and shouting, just thinking about filling his stomach.
"I'm boiling the porridge now, just endure it a bit longer."
Qin Huairu couldn't bear it and went to boil the porridge with red eyes. ===== CHAPTER 40 =====
