Chapter 8: With my broken body I turn into blazing flames!

~6 min read 1,143 words

The news that someone was single-handedly taking on Caesar Life spread through the city like a tide; at first everyone thought it was a joke, until they saw more and more people gathering toward the skyscraper standing in the city center.

At the building's entrance, company employees kept rushing out, continually telling those around what was happening inside.

When more and more people learned that the mastermind behind all this was actually a bare-handed youth, they were shocked beyond compare.

Caesar Life had weighed on them like a mountain for far too long; the monopoly of gene drugs had made them forget what resistance meant, but today a youth's actions told them that Caesar Life was not invincible!

With a booming roar, several lower floors of the building erupted in a violent explosion, and everyone could see the red flames that seemed capable of destroying everything spewing out.

The building was ablaze!

Double Gene Spiral Building F12

"Brother, I respect you as a true man."

"One person dares to charge up, but going up like that is just suicide; put down your weapons now and I can still spare your life."

"Captain! This isn't according to company regulations!"

"Damn it!"

"If it weren't the first time I've done this!"

The leader cursed loudly, and behind him followed a fully armed squad of gene soldiers, who not only possessed excellent gene weapons but were all fourth‑level gene soldiers—they were the building's strongest security force.

The person called the captain held a biological weapon that looked quite extraordinary; for such a fully armed squad to take down Zhang Jie would be a piece of cake.

"I didn't expect there to still be someone with a conscience inside the notorious Caesar Life."

Facing this fully armed gene squad, Zhang Jie's body was covered in wounds, yet he showed no fear, even teasing them leisurely.

"I've come alone to take on Caesar Life—how could I be turned back by a few words from you?"

Zhang Jie threw down the gun he had snatched from the security guard and opened his arms toward the dozen black gun barrels.

"But looking at you like this, if I don't die you'll have a hard time explaining things, right?"

"I came here with the resolve to die; let's just make it quick."

Watching Zhang Jie's carefree demeanor, the captain fell silent for a long time, finally letting out a sigh.

"What a damn screwed‑up era."

He turned away, seemingly unwilling to see Zhang Jie shot full of holes.

"Open fire."

In an instant, the guns specially designed to counter gene soldiers roared, and the unavoidable hail of fire instantly blew Zhang Jie to pieces.

"Sigh..."

Hearing the gunfire end, the captain pulled a cigarette from his pocket and clamped it between his lips.

"Withdraw..."

He took out a lighter, just about to light the cigarette in his mouth, when suddenly a hand landed on his shoulder and a fierce wind and explosion sounded in his ear.

He blinked for a moment, then saw a flaming finger extended before him, lighting his cigarette.

The captain couldn't help but widen his eyes; turning back, he saw Zhang Jie's face bearing a faint smile.

His squad members lay on the ground one by one, like college students who had just fallen asleep; were it not for the thunderous snoring, he would have thought his men were all wiped out.

Everything around was burning, even the tempered glass encircling the building shattered by the blast's impact, yet they were unharmed.

"You're not dead!"

Only Zhang Jie's whole body was intact, the edge of his jacket burning with red flames, like a monarch bathed in fire.

"You're not bad; I'll spare your life—take your men downstairs."

"Otherwise I might accidentally hurt you later."

Zhang Jie patted his shoulder, then headed alone toward the stairs of the thirteenth floor.

After the shock, the captain stared at Zhang Jie's back, unable to regain his composure, as if he saw the true fire that could burn this old era.

"Brother!"

He called out to Zhang Jie.

"If you can reach the company's top floor and kill that old bastard Lu Xuefei, then I, Cheng Wu, will bring my brothers to follow you through knives and fire!"

Zhang Jie's steps didn't stop; he waved his hand behind him.

"It's a promise!"

Building F13.

A fully crimson monstrous beast stood there, its skin flowing like blood, with scarlet mucus continually spreading across the ground—this was the biological weapon Caesar Life had forged from the remnants of a Heaven Disaster Motherbody: the Blood Disaster Beast.

In humanity's history of fighting blood disasters, many Heaven Disaster Motherbodies have been slain, but this remnant is of great origin—it came from the body of the strongest Heaven Disaster Motherbody ever killed by humans.

This motherbody possesses extremely strong infectivity; any substance that touches it becomes wrapped in blood, giving rise to a new blood‑disaster life.

Although still in the experimental stage, its completion is quite high; before long it could be used as Caesar Life's trump card—unfortunately they ran into Zhang Jie.

Beside the beast gathered many expressionless clones, their bodies gradually enveloped by the red blood on the ground until their human shape vanished, assimilated into heavenly disaster.

These disaster creatures stared fixedly at the twelfth‑floor stairwell, poised to strike, yet what awaited them was endless red flames.

"You destroyed Caesar Life's arrangements without breaking a sweat, incinerating those man‑made disaster creatures to ash; perhaps Caesar Life still has hidden trump cards, or perhaps they have more dangerous things in other experimental bases, but you won't give them time to react—storm the top floor! Kill that bastard named Lu Xuefei!"

"After you burned through the huge alloy door blocking the upper passage, you discovered that the fourteenth floor was likewise sealed by an alloy door."

"Huh? All passages are sealed?"

"Is that scary?"

Zhang Jie snorted, then turned and left; this place has over a hundred floors—if he had to burn his way up one level at a time, that grandson Lu Xuefei would probably have to flee by helicopter.

The faint sound of a helicopter came from afar; Zhang Jie knew he couldn't delay, he surged forward and burst out through a side window of the building.

"What the hell is this?!"

On the building's top floor, Lu Xuefei stared at the monitor, clenched his fists, and angrily slammed the table.

"Um... Mr. Lu, the helicopter's here—should we go up first?"

Go? Go screw yourself!

If I leave now, how will those lower-level people look at me from now on!

Have the Research and Security Departments kill him at any cost!

At that moment, a panicked Security Department member came running, pointing outside the rooftop and shouting.

Lu... Lu Lu Lu Chief!

Outside the building! Something is coming up outside the building!!

What?
