Chapter 9: It

~6 min read 1,124 words

What does that mean?

Originally, when Matthew heard Wu Xian say the Umbrella Corporation had assigned him a task, he was startled—but the next words from Wu Xian left him utterly baffled.

Go our separate ways? He’s not planning to come with us!

But doesn’t he know the Hive is about to be sealed shut? If he doesn’t come with us, does he plan to stay in this hellhole?

“We have our own mission to complete, and… don’t think you’ll be safe from now on.”

Wu Xian waved his hand, then spoke to the rebooted Red Queen: “Pull up the surveillance footage from B-Cafeteria. Let them see what’s out there.”

“That violates protocol.”

Red Queen replied—her final act of defiance as an AI.

“It’s an order. Don’t make me say it again.”

Wu Xian raised his hand and shook the remote in his grip, as if to say: figure it out yourself.

Naturally, Red Queen relented. She pulled up the B-Cafeteria surveillance feed, and everyone saw the corpses they’d assumed dead from the gas—now “revived,” limbs stiff, shuffling slowly toward them.

“Holy shit! What the hell is going on?!”

Observers see clearly—the more detached the perspective, the more obvious their unnaturalness. Many of them had guts torn out, yet still crawled forward. They bore no resemblance to humans.

“Zombies. Undead. Call them what you will. They’re the product of Umbrella’s dangerous experiments. That’s why you were given the mission to seal the Hive.”

“Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!”

Matthew cursed repeatedly, even kicking the central computer’s workstation hard—only then did his emotions settle slightly. He muttered bitterly: “No wonder they only gave us three hours. It was because of these things.”

“What do you mean? If we don’t leave in three hours, are they planning to bury us alive down here? How dare they…”

At that moment, Ryan—the male character who had always followed Alice—spoke up, his expression agitated.

“Why not? If it protects their research secrets, a few dead people are a fair trade.”

Wu Xian sneered, then pressed the detonator button in his hand, before everyone’s stunned gaze.

“BOOM——————!!!!”

Brilliant fire erupted on-screen, then darkness. The ground beneath them shook violently. Zhan Lan and Li Xiaoyi, both physically weak, nearly collapsed, their faces pale with terror.

“You’re insane!” x2

Alice, who had remained silent since the laser corridor, suddenly shouted. Red Queen echoed the same cry.

“Don’t panic. I only blew up B-Cafeteria. That much won’t bury the Hive.”

A series of prompts rang in his mind: besides completing the side quest of destroying B-Cafeteria, he gained reward points from killing zombies and “Lickers”—at least several thousand total. This was pure profit.

Smiling faintly, Wu Xian ignored Red Queen’s protests, tore off her motherboard, and handed it along with the remote to Matthew, speaking in a casual tone:

“There are probably more of those things left. If you want to run, do it now.”

“Remember—their weakness is the head. Even if you shred their bodies, they won’t die completely… Avoid contact if you can. If bitten or scratched, you’re almost certainly infected. You’ll become one of them.”

“Also, the Hive holds other monsters—zombie dogs and Lickers. They’re far more dangerous than zombies. If you encounter them, the bombs I installed might help—at least you’ll die with some dignity.”

Matthew’s expression grew complex. His gaze toward Wu Xian softened from earlier irritation: “Come with us. With your abilities, you have a far better chance of escaping than we do.”

“I already said—I have other things to do. And look at those dead weights. With their physical condition, do you really think they can safely retrace their steps with you?”

Wu Xian shrugged, his face full of unspoken exasperation.

Facing the stares from Alice and the mercenaries, Zheng Zha and the others felt deeply embarrassed.

Sure, sure—but being treated like useless baggage still felt humiliating.

“Alright then. Good luck.”

Matthew sighed: “Kaplan, activate the defense system on the laser corridor when you leave. Stay inside—it’s safer.”

“Don’t worry. If we survive, we’ll report your situation to the company… Even if they abandon you, we’ll leak everything to the outside world. They’ll be forced to send a rescue team under pressure!”

With that, he began ordering his team to prepare for evacuation, deliberately leaving behind some weapons for the Zhongzhou team and teaching them how to use them.

Meanwhile, the female lead Alice stepped up to Wu Xian, hesitantly asking: “Excuse me… you’ve recovered your memories, right? Then do you know who I am—and why Umbrella created those horrific things?”

“Sorry, I don’t know much about you. The only thing I can tell you is that you’re extremely important to Umbrella—and…”

Wu Xian looked at the female lead of Resident Evil. He had to admit—this version of Alice was stunning. Aside from her eyes being a bit too prominent, she was nearly flawless.

Thinking of the fate she would suffer in later films, he felt a pang of pity. Finally, he used his mental power to compress his voice and whisper directly into her ear.

The content caused the blonde beauty’s pupils to contract sharply—her face filled with disbelief.

“Remember this. Fight to survive. I hope we meet again someday.”

“Why didn’t you leave with them? Aren’t we not supposed to stray too far from the mercenaries?”

After the mercenaries and Alice departed, Zhan Lan suddenly asked. Others’ faces showed confusion and worry.

“You’re afraid of being erased by the Main God, right? Don’t worry—look at your watch. Has the mission changed?”

Everyone froze, then immediately raised their wrists.

Sure enough, the watch’s mission text had changed. The requirement to follow Matthew or Alice was gone. Only a countdown remained.

“The original countdown was three hours—the deadline for sealing the Hive’s connection to the outside world.”

In other words, once that timer ends, our horror movie mission is over. We can return to the Main God’s space.”

“…So that’s why you stayed behind.”

Zhan Lan suddenly understood, her eyes gleaming: “In the plot, Alice and the others enter the sewer after the mainframe, then cross a perilous aerial walkway. Even after reaching the train car, they’re chased by Lickers. There’s no truly safe place.”

“Here, at least, there’s the laser corridor. We just need to hold out until the countdown ends—we can leave safely.”

“Correct. You’re very sharp.”

Wu Xian smiled slightly, then turned his gaze to Zheng Zha. His expression turned cold.

“The mission is over. Now, it’s time to settle old accounts.”
