Chapter 448: Want to be Military Police and still break the rules?

~7 min read 1,364 words

The Naval Training Third Battalion is about to face an assessment.

That afternoon, the entire battalion entered a rest and recuperation phase.

The fourth floor of the Sixth Company dormitory building is Instructor Sun's quarters, responsible for the Second Battalion's training duties.

At this moment, Instructor Sun is playing cards inside the room with several other instructors, the losers having paper strips stuck to their faces.

"Report, Instructor Sun, are you busy?"

"Who is it?"

Instructor Sun turns his head, pushes the door curtain aside, and looks toward the person at the doorway.

"Instructor, I am Zhang Jiaheng of the Sixth Company, Third Squad; I have something I'd like to ask you,"

"What is it?"

Instructor Sun lets out a short "oh," turns back, and continues playing cards.

Zhang Jiaheng asks, "Instructor, the assessment is tomorrow; I want to know what kind of unit we'll be assigned to after it ends?"

Instructor Sun, while drawing cards, says casually, "Why are you asking that?"

The other instructors playing cards nearby glance at Zhang Jiaheng and joke with a grin.

"Need to ask? You must have a unit you're eyeing, right?"

"Or maybe someone over there sent someone to scoop it up early?"

"Is that so, kid?"

Zhang Jiaheng nods openly and admits, "Instructor Sun, I want to know what performance is needed to get into my ideal unit. In the assessment, what standard must I meet—top one hundred, or top fifty?"

Instructor Sun shuffles the cards in his hand and says, "After the assessment, troop assignments are not under my control; which unit you end up in isn't my decision, so asking me is pointless. If you have the time, you might as well run a few more laps—treat it as a last‑minute cram."

"Then, what will be tested in tomorrow's assessment?"

"Hehe..."

Instructor Sun gathers the cards, turns his head, and looks at the standing Zhang Jiaheng: "You didn't show it in regular training; I didn't expect you to be so sly, coming here to probe for intel early?"

Zhang Jiaheng forces a smile, "Instructor, make an exception; only with good results can I get into that unit."

"Make an exception?"

Instructor Sun rips the paper strip off his face and says, "Do you know what crime leaking information is? You're trying to lead me into a mistake. Speak—after the assessment, which unit do you want to join, what kind of soldier?"

"I want to be Military Police!"

Instructor Sun's expression freezes instantly.

The other card players are also suddenly choked by the smoke.

The room falls silent; a group of instructors stare at him with wide eyes, none having expected this guy to want to become Military Police.

Instructor Sun re‑examines him from head to toe: "What's wrong with you, why are you so fixated on becoming Military Police? What's so good about it?"

Zhang Jiaheng, with a serious expression, says, "Report, Instructor, when I was in the Army I was a proud Military Police soldier; I was demoted to a grassroots company only because I made a minor mistake and offended someone."

"My goals differ from theirs; I strive so that one day I can return to the Military Police ranks, shoulder the mission, and correct the army's misconduct and unhealthy atmosphere!"

Unclear whether intentional or not, his gaze flickers to the playing cards scattered on the bed.

That tiny movement makes the three other instructors, besides Instructor Sun, flinch.

They instantly stand, neatly pack the cards into their pockets, and look for an excuse to slip away.

If the kid were merely hot‑headed, they could just point and scold him for being useless.

But he already said he served as Military Police in the Army and was stripped of his post for offending someone.

People like that are often the easiest for the Military Police to recruit again.

Because the Navy doesn't care about past Army matters; as long as you can take the post and enforce discipline, that's enough.

That means this guy may indeed be approached by the Military Police in the future, becoming again a "white hat" that everyone dislikes.

"Can't afford to provoke, can dodge, truly damn unlucky!"

"Never imagined there'd be an undercover in the crowd!"

"Damn, I wonder if this kid, once he becomes Military Police, will turn on us?"

"Then you're doomed; if he becomes a white hat, he'll definitely target you relentlessly."

"Dammit, instead of taking future risks, I might just mess him up in tomorrow's assessment; maybe give him a big zero so he ends up at the fish farm later!"

"By the way, I heard a while back that another instructor would join us for invigilation; why haven't we heard anything?"

"Who knows, maybe they won't come; we've got enough of us already......"

In the dormitory, Instructor Sun rubs his forehead, gestures for Zhang Jiaheng to close the door and come sit down.

"I ask you, does your Company Commander or Instructor know about this idea?"

"No, they don't."

"So, after the assessment, you don't want to be assigned to the same place as them?"

"Well, can't say that; everyone is indeed kind to me, but I still lean toward the Military Police, that's my ideal."

"What's that, does anyone in your family serve as Military Police?"

"No, not at all."

"Since none, why are you so fixated on it?"

Instructor Sun says earnestly, "Of course, I'm not biased against the Military Police; I think your performance isn't bad, your shooting is decent, so joining the Military Police would be a waste of talent."

Zhang Jiaheng's eyebrows lift in delight, "Really?"

"Hmm, you indeed have some shooting talent; if you go to the Military Police, the three‑plus months of effort would be wasted, as they don't need what we teach there."

"Moreover, if you go, you'll likely be collectively isolated and despised by your current comrades; even so, you still want to become a Military Police?"

Instructor Sun's words leave Zhang Jiaheng deep in thought.

Ideal and reality clash intensely at this moment.

To be honest, setting aside the initial misunderstanding, the Sixth Company treats him pretty well.

Especially when the Sixth Company was reorganized into the Navy and left the vehicles, he cried just like everyone else.

Instructor Sun said: "Some things, think them through before deciding; since you've been in the Military Police, you should know that Military Police isn't a technical branch, staying is hard, and most people later have to switch posts."

"Of course, if you perform exceptionally, you might become a Military Police Squad Leader, serve in the Military Police of the three armed forces, or even be promoted to the Guard Command Headquarters."

"But such a possibility is slim; most likely, after the first term ends and you move to the second term, you'll have to leave."

Zhang Jiaheng looked torn: "But I really want to join the Military Police!"

Instructor Sun: "......"

He had nothing more to say; this kid was obsessed, the Military Police had become his fixation, and not being allowed to join made him feel awful all over.

"You may go."

"Instructor, what exactly will be on the test tomorrow?"

"You, who wants to be in the Military Police, shouldn't you be fair and impartial? How can you lead violations and then ask me about the exam questions?"

"I haven't even gotten the position yet."

Zhang Jiaheng pleaded pitifully: "Just leak a little, just a tiny bit?"

Instructor Sun, now impatient, said: "Get lost, get lost, get lost; from now on don't say you were trained by me, and if anyone asks who your navy training instructor is, just say I'm dead!"

Zhang Jiaheng still couldn't give up; he always believed that if he scored well, gained attention, his chances of being selected by the Military Police would increase.

"Worst case, I'll owe you a favor; if I later catch you making a mistake, I'll let you off—how about that?"

"Holy shit, you actually dare to threaten me beforehand?"

Seeing Instructor Sun pick up the armed belt nearby, Zhang Jiaheng fled in fright.

Just as he was walking down the stairs with a gloomy expression, he bumped straight into Kang Changyi.
