Chapter 575: The Unit

~8 min read 1,403 words

"What are you saying? The Logistics Warehouse was bombed last night?"

At dawn the next day, a Company Commander on the Red side's front line suddenly raised his voice, his face full of shock and amazement.

The soldiers on rotating rest nearby were also startled awake by the shocking news, all furrowing their brows and looking over.

"How could this be? The Logistics Warehouse is so far back, surrounded by heavy troops in multiple layers—how could it be bombed?"

"What are you saying, that Blue army infiltrated, quietly planting bombs under cover of night?"

"How many… three? How did they get in, from Sector D?"

"You're full of it!" The Red Company Commander erupted in fury.

"With so many positions, how can you blame the ones that slipped in from our side? You're plainly slandering, trying to shift the blame onto our company!"

"I'm telling you, no one could have come in from my side; it must be your sentries neglecting duty, or they came around by sea—anyway it couldn't be a problem from my end!"

"The front line is already heating up; higher‑ups demand heightened vigilance. I haven't slept a damn night, and you claim the intruder came from my side—what evidence do you have!"

"What, someone saw someone coming from our side, and there was more than one? You—wait, let me ask."

He hung up, his face turning grim, yet he still refused to believe the slip was on his company's side.

Mistakes on the battlefield are common; after all, coordinating so many units and so many people inevitably leads to oversights.

But a Logistics Warehouse being bombed is a life‑or‑death matter; the front line has already ignited, and the battle line stretches that far.

If we can't capture the Blue army's position quickly, and the front line loses supply, all prior efforts could be in vain.

The Company Commander pulled out a defensive position map and began querying each of our outposts one by one according to their locations on the map.

He asked seven or eight consecutively; all said they saw nothing last night, insisting it wasn't a problem from our side.

That eased the Company Commander's worry a bit; if the Platoon checks reveal no fault on our side, the enemy likely slipped into the ammunition depot from another area, making it unrelated to their company.

"Jiu Hao outpost, copy? Any response?"

"Jiu Hao outpost, Jiu Hao outpost, copy and reply immediately? Hello, hello!"

He called repeatedly several times, but the other end remained silent.

The Company Commander suddenly began to panic, asking who was guarding that spot?

"That hidden outpost is held by Li Tie Niu."

The Company Commander broke into a sweat, shouting several times into the radio, yet still received no reply.

Without a word, he jumped into a vehicle and sped toward the Jiu Hao outpost where Chen Shizai was located, a very bad feeling gnawing at him.

Li Tie Niu is the type who often acts absent‑minded; any Blue army scout that reaches this spot is certainly no ordinary foe. If things go wrong, the enemy could, after taking him out, silently infiltrate from this position and bomb the Logistics Warehouse!

The Jiu Hao outpost isn't far; a seven‑ or eight‑minute drive gets there.

He first scanned the area, finding no signs of combat on site.

The Company Commander strode forward at a gallop, yet still saw no trace of Li Tie Niu.

Just as he assumed the person must have been taken out by the Blue army, a rhythmic snoring sound suddenly came from his feet.

The Company Commander brushed aside the grass and saw a private curled in a seductive sleep posture, drool nearly dripping to the ground.

"Wake up, wake up!"

He immediately yanked the man up, shaking him as hard as a rattle drum.

Seeing he wouldn't wake, he simply slapped him twice, which instantly worked.

"Hmm, Company Commander, why are you here?"

Li Tie Niu, still half‑asleep, blinked and asked, "Is it… time to eat?"

The Company Commander gave him a hard shove: "Eat, eat, eat—you only think about food! I called you on the radio, why didn't you respond?"

"Ah"

Li Tie Niu, still dazed, replied, "I didn't get it?"

The Company Commander snatched the radio at his waist, angrily demanding, "I clearly ordered you to change frequency yesterday; why didn't you? You stayed on the old channel, so you couldn't receive the message!"

Li Tie Niu gradually realized he had fallen asleep again during the night, feeling guilty and uneasy, his reply quieter than a mosquito.

"Speak, can't you open your mouth?"

"Forgot, forgot..."

"Forgot, forgot—what the hell you didn't forget is eating!"

The Company Commander, furious, pounded his steel helmet, the shock numbing his own hand.

"I ask you, was there any suspicious person passing by last night?"

"None."

"Think carefully—was there or wasn't there?!"

"Company Commander, what's happening? I'm timid, don't scare me."

Seeing Li Tie Niu's pitiful state, the Company Commander was utterly incensed.

He had no idea how the higher‑ups allocated troops, ending up with such a lousy soldier under his command.

Stupid as a donkey, eats more than an ox, and just seeing him makes one sick!

"Last night, Blue army personnel infiltrated, bombed our Logistics Warehouse; all ammunition, weapons, supplies are gone, and the neighboring company says the intruder came through our Sector D, even claiming someone saw it!"

"What, so serious—did they catch anyone?"

"Whether they caught him or not is none of your business; I ask whether any suspicious person was seen at night. If none were seen, I still have to ask the remaining outposts; maybe it was a misjudgment."

"It was definitely a misjudgment!"

Li Tie Niu swore, "I didn't see any suspicious personnel at all last night."

"Are you sure?"

"I swear, I kept my eyes wide open, and apart from three Jiao Long Special Operations reinforcements, I saw nothing..."

The Company Commander's heart skipped a beat; he grabbed Li's collar, staring hard into his eyes: "Wait, what did you say—what Jiao Long reinforcements?"

Li Tie Niu looked at the Company Commander just a stone's throw away and was startled: "So, the foreign aid we invited? They said there was Blue Army infiltration, that it would be detrimental to Director Xiao Tang, that they wanted to escort her out, and they asked me for the exact location."

"You, you told them?"

"Yeah."

The Company Commander's heart instantly felt like a knife had been plunged into it, and his vocal cords trembled.

"And, what else?"

"He also asked me where the Warehouse is, saying he wanted to collect weapons and equipment."

"You also told them?"

"No, I just gave a rough location."

"Holy shit!!!!!!!"

The Company Commander's brain felt like it was about to explode; in his fury he kicked him on the spot.

Li Tie Niu was kicked onto the ground, then immediately lifted up again and slammed against a tree.

"You bastard, fuck your grandpa, Li Tie Niu you scumbag, you want to kill me!"

"Are you sent by the heavens to punish me? Do you hold a grudge against me? Did I dig up your family's ancestral graves in a past life? Why are you dragging me down?"

"Do you know that damn it wasn't any Jiaolong foreign aid at all? Those guys are all Blue Army reconnaissance soldiers! The Logistics Warehouse was blown up by them, and damn it, you were the one who pointed out the path!"

"Ah, my brain… I really want to smash my head against something!"

The Company Commander raised his hand and slapped his own face hard several times: "I shouldn't have gone to that lousy military school, shouldn't have joined the army, shouldn't have become a damned Company Commander!"

Li Tie Niu watched the Company Commander squatting on the ground, his emotions out of control to the point of self‑abuse, standing there helplessly, his heart full of guilt and distress.

He simply couldn't believe that the kind and affable Jiaolong chief "Lao Mao" was actually a Blue Army imposter.

How could he act so convincingly, so realistic, just like a real special forces soldier.

Before enlisting, everyone told him that the unit was simple, that soldiers were straightforward.

But after actually arriving, he realized it was nothing like that.

The schemes here are too deep, too deep.

He really wants to go back to the countryside......
