Chapter 98: Which university are you a student at?

~8 min read 1,433 words

Shen Li opened her eyes in a daze, noticing a blurry figure beside her.

The nurse finished hanging the IV: "Little girl, are you awake?"

Shen Li lay on the bed, feeling too weak to speak, her mind a bit blank.

She only remembered coming to the hospital, waiting for her number, and then fainting when she stood up.

After that...

For a moment, she couldn't remember.

Just then, someone pushed the door to the ward and walked in.

A woman in the next bed spoke to the middle-aged man who entered: "She's awake."

Yang Zhou carried the porridge he had just bought, placed it by the bedside, and asked, looking at the girl on the hospital bed: "Nurse, how is my student?"

This voice...

So familiar.

When Shen Li lowered her gaze to look, she finally saw clearly that it was him.

The nurse said: "She just had a fever-reducing injection, and her temperature has come down. There's no major problem for now, but she still needs to be observed for half a day. It's best if someone keeps an eye on her; it's hard to say if the fever will return."

The nurse gave a few more instructions and left.

Shen Li propped herself up on the bed, her head still groggy, her thoughts sluggish: "I... what happened to me?"

Yang Zhou opened the thermos, served her a bowl of porridge, put down the table board, and handed her the spoon: "The doctor said you were too weak and fainted from low blood sugar. You haven't been able to eat anything, so drink some porridge first."

Shen Li: "Thank you."

Then Yang Zhou served another bowl for the woman in the next bed.

"Why did you come to the hospital alone when you were sick? Where is your family?"

Shen Li used her other hand to hold the spoon and took a bite: "They are in Haishi; I'm the only one here."

"No wonder. Next time, it's best to have a classmate accompany you. It's good to have someone to look after you."

Yang Zhou had also gone to the lobby to pay the bill and happened to see a little girl faint.

He rushed over to check, never expecting it to be her.

Coming out of the emergency room, the doctor said she had a fever of forty degrees. Fortunately, she arrived in time, and there was no major problem.

Yang Zhou chuckled and mentioned a few things to the woman beside him: "She is the genius student I told you about. She finished the problems at my place and ran off with the buffet voucher. Those Olympiad Mathematics problems were just released this year; even the teachers at our institution would take half a day to solve them. But she? She solved one of the problems in less than an hour."

"If a student like this were at our institution, she'd be a hot commodity."

"But... it's a pity she's not my student. If I could bring up a student like this, I'd be able to stand tall in any meeting."

The woman smiled softly: "Her parents must have taught her well to have such a beautiful and excellent daughter."

"What do your mom and dad do?"

Her words were full of praise and satisfaction for Shen Li.

Shen Li: "They are both teachers."

"What a coincidence, we are teachers too, and we have a daughter about your age." The woman looked at Shen Li, the smile on her lips tinged with bitterness.

Yang Zhou finally remembered an important matter and asked her: "Which university are you a student at?"

"Recently, the teachers at our institution asked around at all the nearby universities, and they all said they didn't have a student like you."

Shen Li took several mouthfuls of porridge with the spoon. It had a faint scent of pork ribs and tasted very good, different from the porridge she had ordered. She had already eaten more than half the bowl: "I study at Chengde University."

"What?" Yang Zhou doubted his ears.

Shen Li ignored the shock in his eyes, took the empty bowl, and reached it toward him: "I want more."

Yang Zhou looked at her with suspicion, but soon assumed she was joking. He got up from the stool and served her another bowl: "You little girl, you're quite guarded, really good at joking."

Shen Li only cared about drinking the porridge, holding the spoon and eating a bit hurriedly. After finishing one bite, she immediately took the second.

The woman on the side said: "Looks like she's really hungry; she hasn't eaten all day, right?"

Shen Li nodded and told him again: "I'm not lying to you."

"Really not joking?" Yang Zhou looked at the woman beside him in shock. No matter what, he didn't believe it.

After all, with her ability level, she could choose any university in the country; how could she possibly go to Chengde to study at a vocational college!

Wasting such a good seedling, what were her parents thinking!

A while later, Shen Li asked for a third bowl.

Shen Li had finished almost all the porridge brought in the thermos.

It wasn't until Yang Zhou and the woman beside him held Shen Li's student ID card, their faces full of disbelief, that they couldn't recover for a long while.

They looked at Shen Li, then at the student ID card. If not for her photo on it, they would have suspected it was fake.

The woman's expression also turned solemn, and she asked curiously: "With your ability, how did you end up at a vocational college? Was it... your parents' decision?"

Shen Li's hand holding the spoon paused, and then she fell silent...

Seeing she didn't speak, they didn't ask further, just returned the student ID card to her.

Thinking it was a personal matter, it wasn't convenient to talk about, so they didn't ask.

The woman: "Old Yang, see if there's any porridge left."

Yang Zhou got up: "Whoa, great appetite, drank it all. There wasn't much made today; shall I go outside and buy you some more?"

Shen Li felt she hadn't been this full in a long time and felt she had regained some strength: "I'm full, thank you."

The ward returned to a moment of silence.

Shen Li turned her gaze to the woman beside her, seeing she was wearing a knit hat, her complexion was a sickly pale, her body was very thin, and the hospital gown she wore hung loosely on her.

It seemed she had a very serious illness.

The woman noticed her gaze, met her eyes, and smiled kindly.

Now, there were only the two of them in the ward.

Yang Zhou had gone to get the medicine.

The woman told her: "I have leukemia. Did my appearance scare you?"

Shen Li shook her head, her heart sinking slightly: "No."

This illness... she knew it was very hard to recover from.

Shen Li's brain seemed to be stuck with paste again, and for a moment, she didn't know what comforting words to say. After a long while, she said slowly: "You must eat more; you will get better."

A smile bloomed on the woman's lips: "Mm."

Just now, Shen Li had seen her eat only two or three mouthfuls of porridge before stopping.

The ward soon fell into a moment of silence.

Yang Zhou brought back a large handful of medicine, had her take it, and before long, she was lying on the bed, asleep.

Shen Li also slept for a while.

In her sleep, she felt a slight stinging sensation from the needle on the back of her hand.

Nurse: "When she wakes up, take her temperature again, and she can be discharged."

Yang Zhou: "Thank you, sorry for the trouble."

Shen Li opened her eyes, and there was a blurry silhouette sitting beside her.

"Dad..."

Yang Zhou didn't hear clearly what she said, glanced at her, and then put his focus back on the newspaper.

It was already eight o'clock in the evening when Shen Li's fever broke and she was discharged.

When she left, the woman in the next bed hadn't woken up yet. She moved very lightly so as not to disturb her and left a note before leaving.

She just felt it wouldn't be right to leave without saying goodbye.

The hospital was very large, and Shen Li had no sense of direction. She was holding the form, preparing to pay the bill, when suddenly, in a corridor, an impatient voice came. ===== CHAPTER 99 =====
