Chapter 14: Saving Long Er (Please add to favorites, please vote)
"Speak."
The information lacked any real substance, so Hong Zhiyou tapped the table and asked.
"This man's nickname is Long Er. He used to be the right-hand man of Fourth Master Zhang of the River Transport Gang, and he was also the second-in-command of the gang.
"Before, when the Japanese occupied Jinhai, the River Transport Gang helped them handle cargo.
"Now that the territory has been recovered, when Boss Dai came in person to provide guidance, he specifically named the dock gangs for a crackdown. Long Er, out of loyalty, took the fall for Fourth Master Zhang, shouldering all the blame, and was locked up as a traitor.
"The higher-ups now want to execute them to set an example; a batch is to be killed this month.
"Long Er is on the list, and he is to be executed tonight."
Detective Huang said in a low voice.
"This matter should be for Fourth Master Zhang to plead for mercy, why did you come?" Hong Zhiyou asked in detail.
"Long Er was not originally on this list; it was your Section Chief Lu who added him.
"Why? Isn't it just to kill him to silence him?
"Think about it, in these peaceful times, the River Transport Gang has plenty to eat and drink, and Long Er has a huge following at the docks.
"Fourth Master Zhang wants the Young Master to take over, and Long Er is a thorn in his side, a nail in his eye."
Detective Huang lit a cigarette, took a puff, and continued:
"To tell you the truth, while in the detention center, Fourth Master Zhang already sent people to assassinate Long Er and even tried to poison him.
"Fortunately, someone looked out for him, and he survived.
"The grudge between these two is set in stone; otherwise, why would Fourth Master Zhang be in such a rush to have your Section Chief Lu get rid of Long Er?"
"Fourth Master Zhang is quite the piece of work. If I were Long Er, I'd want to tear him to shreds too." Hong Zhiyou nodded in agreement.
"Station Chief Wu is the director of the Jinhai Traitor Suppression Committee.
"Who to kill and who not to kill is just a matter of a stroke of his pen.
"Secretary Hong, I truly hope you can show some mercy and put in a good word."
Detective Huang put down his cigarette and bowed to Hong Zhiyou.
"Since Mrs. Kang sent you, you should know the rules," Hong Zhiyou said.
"I understand.
"Long Er has an old house containing some antiques and opium.
"Station Chief Wu likes old things; he can go and take them directly.
"If he wants gold bars or US dollars, I can also ask Mrs. Kang to exchange them on the black market.
"In a word, as long as Long Er's life can be saved, anything goes."
Huang Zhong's tone was extremely pleading.
"You go back first. I will have someone send the execution list later; wait for my call," Hong Zhiyou said.
"It all depends on you."
Huang Zhong bowed ninety degrees and then walked out.
"Heaven helps me!"
Hong Zhiyou gave a dry laugh, put away the documents, and walked quickly toward the station chief's office.
Wu Jingzhong was talking with Yu Zecheng.
"Station Chief." Hong Zhiyou gave him a look.
"Director Yu, you go first; I'll be there in a moment," Wu Jingzhong instructed.
"Very well, Station Chief."
Yu Zecheng took the order and left.
"Station Chief, take a look at this." Hong Zhiyou handed over Long Er's file.
"What does this mean?" Wu Jingzhong glanced at it.
Hong Zhiyou laid out the conditions offered by Long Er.
Upon hearing there were old artifacts, Wu Jingzhong immediately became excited.
"Little Hong, you were slighted in the River Transport Gang affair; I must get even for you.
"Since this Long Er is deeply entrenched in the River Transport Gang and is a mortal enemy of Fourth Master Zhang.
"Release him, he must be released!"
Wu Jingzhong put on an air of righteous indignation on his behalf.
"Many thanks, Station Chief." Hong Zhiyou bowed tactfully.
"Should we find someone to verify the items first?" he asked again.
"Hmm, you can't fully trust the words of thugs and hoodlums.
"How about you..."
Wu Jingzhong stopped halfway through his sentence.
"Station Chief, I can't go out. Why not let Director Yu go?
"He is your personal student, after all."
Hong Zhiyou did not want to be too greedy for credit, which might affect Old Yu's advancement.
"That works too. Director Yu hasn't left yet; hurry and notify him," Station Chief Wu said, looking at him with satisfaction.
"Yes, Station Chief."
Hong Zhiyou took the order.
Watching his back, a knowing smile appeared on Wu Jingzhong's face.
He liked Hong Zhiyou more and more.
He knew how to handle things and how to make money.
He kept the big picture in mind and didn't stir up trouble internally.
Wu Jingzhong had been worrying about how to tie these two "gods of wealth" together.
He was afraid that 1+1 would have a counterproductive effect and that he wouldn't be able to balance the scales.
That Hong Zhiyou had this mindset actually saved him the trouble.
With such "dual guns in hand, the gold is mine," why worry about the great cause of making money not succeeding?
Thinking of this, he picked up the phone and dialed a number:
"Connect me to the Baodi branch.
"Hello, is that Qiaoshan? About when can you return from Baodi?
"Noon?
"Perfect. There is a regular meeting at the Garrison Headquarters at three this afternoon; you attend on my behalf.
"There's nothing wrong with it. You are a Lieutenant Colonel; won't the future of the Party-State eventually fall into your hands?
"Just treat it as practice in advance to interact with those commanders."
Hanging up the phone, Wu Jingzhong put his hands behind his back and felt quite pleased.
By the time Lu Qiaoshan finished the meeting, the people who should be released would be released, and those who should be executed would be executed.
The Cantonese fellow shouldn't have any objections, right?
Hong Zhiyou arrived at the parking lot outside.
Yu Zecheng was about to get into his car.
"Director Yu, wait." Hong Zhiyou called out to him.
"Is there something, Secretary Hong?"
Yu Zecheng was in a hurry to follow orders and go to Mu Liancheng's house to discuss the winery.
"The Station Chief wants you to take Li, the appraiser from Wanshunzhai, to go there. Once you arrive, just say you are a friend of Detective Huang.
"Verify the items inside.
"If they are suitable, load them directly onto the truck and take them away."
Hong Zhiyou instructed in a low voice.
"Good!" Yu Zecheng glanced at him and closed the car door.
Hong Zhiyou returned to the office.
Wu Jingzhong was in a great mood and invited him to drink tea in the office.
An hour later, Yu Zecheng returned.
He looked at Hong Zhiyou, waited two seconds, and seeing that the Station Chief had no intention of dismissing him, he reported:
"Station Chief, it's done.
"Appraiser Li has looked at them; they are all treasures.
"Among them, several paintings and vases are very valuable, and there is also a crate of opium, which I handed directly to your wife."
"Good, good!"
"Zecheng, you have... no, you personally take the roster and go to the Shuitun Prison to pick up the person."
Wu Jingzhong was overjoyed and made the decision on the spot.
"Why not let Secretary Hong go together?" Yu Zecheng smiled.
"Hmm, you two get along well; your personalities and temperaments are like those of the same kind." Wu Jingzhong smiled meaningfully.
"Secretary Hong, you go too; I will dispatch military police to protect you both."
"Never mind the Canal Gang; even if the King of Heaven himself dared to block the road, I'd shoot him dead."
Wu Jingzhong made the decision on the spot.
Half an hour later, the Military Police Headquarters sent three large trucks of fully armed soldiers to protect the two of them from the front and back.
"Thanks to you, brother, I finally dare to step outside."
Getting into the Beetle sedan, Hong Zhiyou let out a sigh of relief.
What made him happy was that, under the bombardment of sugar-coated bullets, Wu Jingzhong was valuing him more and more.
"Brother Hong, you are too kind."
"Today's matter relied entirely on you, brother; I simply benefited from your success."
Yu Zecheng sighed from the bottom of his heart.
Regarding the Mu Liancheng matter, he had botched the job.
The Station Chief had handed it to him, but after negotiating for half a month, he hadn't squeezed out any profit.
The dog traitor had only handed over two buildings, causing him to be thoroughly reprimanded and lectured by the Station Chief.
Even the way Sister Mei looked at him was like she was wielding a knife.
Hong Zhiyou was truly providing help in his time of need.
"Old Yu, I treat you like a brother; we are one family serving the Station Chief, so don't talk about benefiting from me."
"Let's help each other out in the future."
Hong Zhiyou said.
"Good!" Yu Zecheng smiled and nodded.
They arrived at Shuitun Prison.
Inspector Huang had been waiting there for a while, chatting with a young officer wearing a dark yellow military uniform.
"They're here."
Inspector Huang and the officer walked over.
The officer had fair skin, a side-parted hairstyle, stood 1. meters tall, had sword-like eyebrows and star-bright eyes, and with his hands in his pockets, his temperament was quite cold and arrogant.
So handsome!
He was actually only a tiny bit worse than me.
"Inspector Huang, aren't you going to introduce us?" Hong Zhiyou got out of the car and asked with a smile.
"Secretary Hong, Director Yu, this is Liao Sanmin from Shuitun Prison."
Inspector Huang introduced him.
Hong Zhiyou's eyes lit up.
No wonder he was so handsome; it turned out to be Brother Sanmin, whom thousands of netizens felt sorry for.
