Chapter 11: Discovering the Mole

~7 min read 1,373 words

"Tomorrow I have a mission and can't get away..." Chen Yongren deliberately said: "Besides, sister is so good, brother can't bear to leave you."

"You just have the sweetest mouth." Mrs. Hu gave Chen Yongren a sideways glance, let out a soft hum, and said: "You're so smooth-talking, then tomorrow take a day off and spend more time with me."

Chen Yongren didn't answer, but instead asked: "Mrs. Hu, have you read the poem 'Mooring at the Qinhuai River'?"

"'Mooring at the Qinhuai River?' No." Mrs. Hu shook her head, puzzled: "Why suddenly ask about this? I didn't realize you liked poetry and prose so much."

Chen Yongren didn't respond, but rather said to himself: "There are two lines in it that I remember especially deeply and am particularly interested in."

"Oh? Those two lines, go on and let me hear them."

Chen Yongren lowered his voice and whispered something in her ear; Mrs. Hu's cheeks instantly flushed, she gave him a flirtatious glance, but then turned away on her own.

Only when Mrs. Hu woke up the next day did she discover that Chen Yongren had already left.

"If I had known this guy's combat power was so strong, I should have tried to win him over earlier."

"At least if I went home I could get a decent meal, not be starving like now."

Mrs. Hu lay in bed recalling the intimacy of last night.

At that moment.

The telephone nearby suddenly rang, breaking the mood and interrupting Mrs. Hu's daydream.

"How annoying!"

"This is just getting a bit interesting."

Mrs. Hu stopped what she was doing, complained a bit, then as she tried to sit up and get out of bed, her legs suddenly went weak and she plopped down onto the floor.

"It's all that guy's fault!" Mrs. Hu said coquettishly, struggled to get up from the floor, holding her waist, and limped over to the telephone.

She picked up the phone, heard the voice on the other end, and Mrs. Hu frowned slightly.

"I almost forgot about this!"

"It was agreed that as a reward for him providing information, today I would keep him company properly!"

"Okay, okay, I know; wait for me to take a shower, change clothes, and then I'll go keep you company."

"Don't worry, I'll definitely wear it."

Mrs. Hu patiently coaxed him with a few words, then immediately grew impatient and hung up the phone.

"He's useless at work, but he sure knows how to have fun."

"Really a buzzkill."

Mrs. Hu took another shower, changed her clothes and hairstyle, put on a pair of black stockings, then stepped into her high heels and clicked out of the room.

Seeing Chen Yongren's door tightly shut, she assumed he had already left, and Mrs. Hu silently regretted it.

Thinking that the mole was still waiting, Mrs. Hu didn't have time to think further, hurried out of the apartment, and hailed a random rickshaw at the curb.

Seeing that, Chen Yongren then hurried out of the apartment building.

Today.

We must first find out exactly who this mole, lurking inside, is!

Seeing Chen Yongren approach, Xiangzi, who had been waiting respectfully for a long time, immediately went forward and said: "Master, you've arrived."

Chen Yongren nodded slightly, expressionlessly got into the rickshaw, and said: "Catch up to that rickshaw just ahead."

"All right, Master, hold on tight." Xiangzi didn't ask why, pulled the rickshaw and gave chase.

Having long worked the lower rungs and seen all sorts of customers, Xiangzi naturally knew exactly when to speak and when to stay silent.

Although Chen Yongren had agreed to meet Xiangzi at 7:30 yesterday, his battle with Mrs. Hu ran so long that he was late by a full one and a half hours.

Even so, Xiangzi still did not leave.

Chen Yongren also believed that Xiangzi genuinely wanted to seize this opportunity and was determined to work for him.

Sitting in the vehicle.

Chen Yongren suddenly noticed that today's rickshaw was somewhat different from yesterday's.

This rickshaw today had obviously been carefully cleaned, looking as good as new, and the seat cushion underneath was softer than yesterday's.

Two little sachets hung from the rain canopy's frame; sitting inside, one could even faintly smell their fragrance.

A pair of finely crafted tiny tiger ornaments hung from the handlebars.

Xiangzi slightly turned his head and said: "Master, there's breakfast prepared for you in the box under the seat; please take it out and have a bite to tide you over."

Chen Yongren got up, lifted the seat cushion, took out the kraft paper, and opened it to see.

Inside were two steaming hot big meat buns.

This Xiangzi, he really is thoughtful.

Xiangzi quickly caught up to Mrs. Hu's rickshaw.

No need for Chen Yongren to keep reminding him; Xiangzi steadily kept about twenty meters behind that rickshaw.

Moreover, Mrs. Hu's rickshaw stayed within Chen Yongren's field of vision the whole time, never leaving it for even half a second.

Only when they arrived at Fuchang Restaurant did Mrs. Hu finally get out of the rickshaw.

Without Chen Yongren needing to say more, Xiangzi also had the sense not to continue pursuing; instead he stopped the rickshaw at the roadside where the entrance of Fuchang Restaurant could be seen.

Next.

Chen Yongren then saw a middle-aged man in a dark gray suit step forward quickly, help Mrs. Hu out of the rickshaw, pull out a fabi note from his pocket, and hand it to the rickshaw puller.

Afterwards he put his arm around Mrs. Hu, chatting and laughing as they walked into Fuchang Restaurant.

If nothing unexpected happens, he is almost certainly the mole Mrs. Hu needs to meet today!

Fuchang Restaurant is one of the largest eateries in Jinling City, yet they actually chose to rendezvous in such a place…

Those staying here are either wealthy merchants from all over or government officials.

Chen Yongren momentarily didn't know whether to say the man was arrogant or foolish.

However, now that we know what the mole looks like, the rest will be much easier.

Chen Yongren was thinking, how could he confirm his identity?

Just then he heard Xiangzi mutter: 'How could it be him?'

'What do you mean, how could it be him?' Chen Yongren's heart stirred.

'I've seen that man before,' Xiangzi said in a low voice.

Chen Yongren exclaimed, 'What did you say?'

He was genuinely surprised; he had originally intended to rely on Xiangzi to gather some intelligence, but he hadn't expected Xiangzi to give him such an unexpected surprise so quickly.

Xiangzi didn't beat around the bush, directly saying: 'He works inside the General Headquarters; I don't know exactly what he does, but I feel his position must be quite high.'

'Why do you say that?' Chen Yongren asked.

Xiangzi also said: 'At that time, someone was waiting for him at the entrance of the General Headquarters, treating him with great respect, calling him Secretary Huang, and also saying that the Premier was very angry.'

The Secretary-General was about to scold him, telling him to hurry up and go to a meeting or something…

'This is the first time I've brought a client who works at the General Headquarters, so my memory of him is particularly deep.'

'Grandfather, we can't afford to provoke someone like this; we might as well just forget about it…'

Upon hearing this, Chen Yongren realized Xiangzi had misunderstood.

At that moment, he also couldn't be bothered to explain further, seriously analyzing the identity of Secretary Huang.

Premier…

Within the entire Republic of China Government, only one unit both is located inside the General Headquarters and holds the position of Premier…

Executive Yuan.

The Executive Yuan oversees many administrative divisions, and there should be quite a few secretary positions as well.

If a secretary from another department were late, the Secretary-General probably wouldn't get angry.

That guy surnamed Huang is likely one of the several secretaries in the Secretariat of the Executive Yuan.

The Executive Yuan is also the highest administrative organ of the National Government; it's no surprise that Secretary Huang, leveraging his position, could come into contact with some core secrets.

Damn mole, I've finally caught you!
