Chapter 383: Continuing the Vetting

~7 min read 1,307 words

"Can we get out?" Chen Yongren took out a pass, waved it, and said, "Please drop the 'ma' particle; with this, who could stop us?"

Although Lin Ke Xin wanted to stay a few more days, to clarify whether the medicine had been delivered to the front lines, and whether Feng Xue was truly safe.

But the facts did not allow her to do so.

Tengyuan Jintai gave only four days; staying longer would certainly arouse suspicion.

This mission was originally led by Chen Yongren; Lin Ke Xin shouldn't interfere too much, so she could only wait until returning, then seek an opportunity to contact Chen Dian to learn whether the mission succeeded.

With a pass personally signed by the old devil, the two faced no obstruction all the way, no one dared to intercept them, and they rushed nonstop from Hangzhou Prefecture back to Songhu.

On the way.

The two's relationship seemed to have returned to normal, Lin Ke Xin addressing him as "chief" over and over, as if the earlier probing had never existed.

Just as when they first arrived at Hangzhou Prefecture, by the time they returned to Songhu it was already night.

But Chen Yongren didn't go home; instead, he ordered Lin Ke Xin to drive to the Fujiwara Agency.

Preparing to first report to the old devil Fujiwara that the mission was completed, to see what nonsense the old devil could still spout.

After instructing Lin Ke Xin to guard the car below, Chen Yongren headed into the Fujiwara Agency.

In the Fujiwara office.

Although it was already night, the old devil was still working overtime.

Looking at the telegram sent from Hangzhou, the old devil Fujiwara frowned slightly.

The intelligence showed that Chen Yongren had completed the transport mission on the day he arrived at Hangzhou Prefecture.

But the very next day, a melee broke out at the Spring Come Teahouse, causing the agents of the Hangzhou Prefecture Special Agency to fail in their operation to capture the Red Party.

Moreover, the Imperial agents in Hangzhou suffered heavy losses, the investigation yielded nothing, and it bears a striking resemblance to recent events in Songhu.

Under normal circumstances, the old devil Fujiwara wouldn't give it much thought.

After all, this matter concerned the Red Party's drug transfer; deploying some elite agents to secretly protect the cargo was reasonable.

But this incident happened to occur precisely when Chen Yongren arrived at Hangzhou Prefecture.

Could there be some special connection involved?

Thinking of what happened in Songhu, Tengyuan Jintai simply didn't believe in coincidence.

If it were a coincidence, this timing would be too coincidental to be believable.

Originally, Tengyuan Jintai had regained some trust in Chen Yongren, but the accident at the Spring Come Teahouse reduced it again considerably.

Regardless of whether this incident was accidental, Chen Yongren's identity still needs to be continually clarified; his vetting cannot be stopped for a moment.

As he was thinking, a knock on the door outside interrupted his train of thought.

"Come in." the old devil rubbed his temples and said in a low voice.

A Japanese soldier pushed the door open and ran in, standing at attention and saying, "Major His Excellency, Chen Yongren has returned."

"Chen Yongren?" Tengyuan Jintai immediately said, "Let him in quickly."

Although it's an act, the necessary actions still need to be carried out.

The surface work must be done well.

But the old devil Fujiwara didn't realize that his inner thoughts had already been seen through by Chen Yongren outside the door.

This old devil, indeed began to guard against himself, Chen Yongren thought to himself.

Clearing his own name really wasn't that easy.

Since you're so good at making connections, I don't mind letting you make even more; with the Anywhere Door in hand, as long as I have uses, I can freely shuttle between Songhu and Hangzhou Prefecture.

What happened today in Hangzhou Prefecture was an accident, but from now on it will become inevitable!

Upon the Japanese soldier's report, Chen Yongren quickly walked into the office.

"Director Fujiwara." Chen Yongren stood at attention.

"Chen Sang, you've worked hard, please sit down!" the old devil Fujiwara squeezed out a smile.

"Working for Director Fujiwara is only natural." Chen Yongren kept a straight face, pulled out a letter from his pocket, and said, "This is the letter he asked me to give you."

The old devil Fujiwara took the envelope; the wax seal was still intact, with no signs of having been opened.

"Very good, Chen Sang, you've done this well; I knew trusting you was right." Tengyuan Jintai praised him insincerely.

"Thank you for the praise, Director Fujiwara." Chen Yongren bowed.

"You've worked hard going back and forth between Songhu and Hangzhou Prefecture this time." Tengyuan Jintai said, "Rest assured, I will prepare what you deserve."

"No refusing allowed!"

"Yes!" Chen Yongren bowed, wanting to say more but hesitating.

"Chen Sang, is there anything else?" Tengyuan Jintai asked.

"What happened in Hangzhou Prefecture, have you heard about it, Director Fujiwara?" Chen Yongren asked.

Tengyuan Jintai was somewhat surprised, not expecting Chen Yongren to bring up the matter himself.

But this old devil was also cunning; he didn't voluntarily disclose the details, instead offering a vague remark: "I've heard that a group of vicious resistance fighters came to Hangzhou Prefecture and gunned down dozens of Imperial troops and new government agents."

Chen Yongren nodded: "I only learned of these things after leaving the city; I had wanted to reveal my identity to investigate, but thinking of your instructions, I refrained from causing trouble."

Tengyuan Jintai nodded: "You did the right thing; otherwise, if outsiders investigated, why would a Unit 76 Chief Advisor leave Songhu? That would certainly be a troublesome matter."

The old devil didn't follow up on that topic: "Chen Sang, it's already very late."

"You've been weary from travel these past two days; go home and rest."

"Director Fujiwara, what about my work?" Chen Yongren asked deliberately.

"Work?" the director again said: "Unit 76 has undergone your training; its performance has been quite good. Keep at it and train more elites!"

"Unit 76 needs someone like you; perform well, Chen Sang, don't let me down."

The old devil pretended ignorance, not mentioning the matter of letting Chen Yongren again lead Unit 76.

Upon hearing that, Chen Yongren didn't add more: "Yes, Director Fujiwara, I will certainly devote myself wholeheartedly to serving Unit 76!"

After saying that, Chen Yongren turned and left.

Until Chen Yongren's figure disappeared from sight, Tengyuan Lao Guizi directly lit and threw the letter Chen Yongren had brought back into the ashtray.

Since Chen Yongren could bring the letter back, it doesn't matter what is written on it; besides, there really isn't a way to get money inside.

Chen Sang, Chen Sang…

It's not that I want to suspect you; it's just why do you always run into these mishaps when you could prove yourself?

If I can't thoroughly prove your identity is correct, how dare I continue to rely on you?

Tengyuan Jintai rubbed his chin.

Preparing to launch a new round of screening actions against Chen Yongren.

Inside the carriage.

Chen Yongren got into the carriage with a dark face, tone unfriendly: "Drive!"

Lin Ke Xin asked no more, drove to the villa, and each returned to their room.

Lying in bed, Lin Ke Xin couldn't bring herself to sleep.

The conversation before returning from Hangzhou proved that Chen Yongren is absolutely not as simple as his surface identity.

This is also evidenced by Tengyuan Zhengtai beginning to distance himself from him and transferring himself here to monitor.

But just who is he—one of ours, or from the Military Statistics Bureau, or the Central Statistics Bureau?

Tossing and turning, Lin Ke Xin began to ponder how to verify Chen Yongren's identity.
