Chapter 453: New Instructor
When they arrived, they hadn't brought much luggage; after a simple packing, the driver sent by the boss also came to the doorstep.
The driver was helping load Chen Yongren and Lin Ke Xin's luggage into the car.
"Chief Chen, you can get in!" the driver said respectfully, pulling open the rear-seat door and lightly shielding the door frame with his hand.
Chen Yongren instinctively used his scanning eye to ascertain the person's identity, confirmed there was no problem, slightly nodded, was about to get in, when he heard someone shout from behind.
"Chen!"
Following the sound, he saw Grace running over.
"Miss Grace, how did you come?" Chen Yongren asked curiously.
Lately he hadn't seen Grace, and Chen Yongren assumed she had returned to the country to report back.
"Sorry, Chen." Grace said apologetically: "If it weren't for dragging you into the investigation, you wouldn't have been implicated."
Grace had also heard some rumors, and not seeing Chen Yongren for a while, she assumed he was busy with important matters.
This American girl wasn't foolish; she knew Chen Yongren had gotten himself into trouble.
Chen Yongren, however, was optimistic: "What are you thinking? After solving such a big case, my boss ought to give me some time off to relax."
He then quickly changed the subject: "Miss Grace, I'm sure you've also earned a great merit this time? If you get the chance, remember to come back and treat me to a celebration drink."
Seeing Chen Yongren bear no resentment, Grace felt even more guilty: "Chen, I understand completely; this matter, even within our own side, actually exists..."
"But why make you alone take the blame?"
"Chen, why don't you come with me? I'll take you to the United States to re-enter military school for further studies; I can provide you with the best educational resources."
"With your abilities, you will surely become the top student at West Point."
Grace's attitude was sincere, utterly not joking.
"I can immediately help you get a passport; at the latest by tomorrow you can fly back to the United States, just say hello and you'll be admitted to school, starting your new life." Grace added.
"If you're worried your superior might obstruct, it's fine; I'll take care of these troubles."
"This foreign lady, quite thoughtful," Chen Yongren shook his head and refused: "Miss Grace, I appreciate your kindness, but I still prefer my current life."
"Besides, I've already received a transfer order from my superiors; I can't just abandon my post now."
"But..." Seeing Chen Yongren's firm stance, Grace said helplessly: "Where are you headed?"
"Hibiscus City; the military academy lacks an instructor, and I happen to be filling the vacancy." Chen Yongren said leisurely.
"Hibiscus City..." Grace thought for a moment, then said: "Okay, I understand!"
"Chen, once I finish these matters, I will come find you; you must wait for me."
"No problem, I'll welcome you anytime." Chen Yongren nodded.
"Regarding the military academy matter, have you really thought it through?" Grace added: "Such an opportunity comes once in a lifetime; ordinary people could never hope to obtain it."
"Besides, you could take the chance to stay away from this vortex..."
"Chen, frankly, they don't deserve to have an outstanding officer like you; you could have better options."
"The moment the incident occurred, they actually thought about how to deal with you, instead of handling those truly corrupt bastards!"
Grace was very angry.
Through his scanning eye, Chen Yongren also knew that after Grace reported the matter, the U. S. side, seeing the National Government's reaction, reluctantly accepted it.
The Chongqing corruption case was also thoroughly exposed, then lightly settled.
It's obvious those Americans merely wanted to exploit this matter to strike hard at the National Government and, incidentally, gain more benefits.
Chen Yongren smiled and didn't respond.
"If you've figured it out, I can anytime help you with enrollment." Grace continued.
"No problem." Chen Yongren replied with a smile.
"Goodbye, Chen, safe travels; you go to Hibiscus City first, I'll take care of these things and then come find you." Grace lightly hugged Chen Yongren, then gave him a cheek kiss: "I think we'll see each other again soon."
"Then it's settled." Chen Yongren waved goodbye to Grace, turned back, and sat down in the car.
Lin Ke Xin, who had been watching the whole scene, expressionless, sat in the passenger seat.
The car slowly started up, heading toward Hibiscus City.
"What is this?" Chen Yongren noticed a briefcase placed on the adjacent seat.
"Look at my memory, this is a gift from the boss for you." The driver glanced at the rearview mirror, patted his head, feigning apology.
"The boss specifically instructed, this is your gift; you'll know as soon as you open it."
"A gift?"
"What nice thing did the boss give?"
Lin Ke Xin was also a bit curious, but she remained reserved, lifting her head to look at the rearview mirror.
Chen Yongren opened the suitcase and found a set of military uniform inside, with a pair of major general insignia collar tabs lying in the center, gleaming gold.
"My military uniform?"
The contents of the box surprised Chen Yongren greatly.
Knowing Chen Yongren had stirred up big trouble, during his recuperation at home he had proactively turned in his officer's uniform together with the rank insignia to the boss.
After a few days of rest at home, the boss showed no reaction whatsoever, not even mentioning the return of the uniform in their earlier call.
Chen Yongren therefore assumed the insignia would be stripped, never expecting the boss to pull this stunt.
Lin Ke Xin also noticed the contents of the box, her expression surprised.
Just what kind of divine being is this Chen Yongren?
Not to mention the rank insignia had been promoted out of turn; after causing such a huge mess in Chongqing, he not only got away unscathed but even managed to keep his insignia?
Upon reflection, it's not strange—the insignia was just recently bestowed upon them; to revoke it would be slapping their own face.
Moreover, this young master's identity and background are right there.
Chen Yongren's expression remained normal.
He discovered a letter pressed beneath the insignia, picked up the envelope, and saw a sentence written on it.
Junior Li Xing personally opened.
Tsk.
That junior's shout was really warm.
When the senior is on your mind, you can't get through on the phone, right?
Muttering to himself, Chen Yongren tore open the envelope, saw the contents, and couldn't help laughing.
Generally speaking.
The boss first scolded Chen Yongren for returning his uniform, and told him not to throw a tantrum, that such behavior would never be allowed again.
Next, they tried to soothe Chen Yongren; sending him to Rong City as an instructor was merely a reluctant move by the higher-ups.
Too many people are involved in Yu City's corruption case, Chen Yongren has made too many enemies, staying here would likely bring disaster, with intertwined internal forces; it's not that simple.
The higher-ups couldn't stand the gossip, but they couldn't really punish Chen Yongren, so they came up with this compromise, letting him lay low for a while.
Once things have mostly passed, they'll transfer him back to Yu City, letting Chen Yongren put his mind at ease, serve as an instructor at the military academy, and await orders.
This pie is really big, Chen Yongren pursed his lips.
Believing this sentence is less likely than believing Grace could take him to the United States tomorrow to study at West Point Military Academy.
