Chapter 616

~6 min read 1,199 words

Should I fold a paper airplane and throw it out from here?

Moreno held her head high, her face full of terror:

"It is bending down. I feel like it is watching me."

"It is bending down. I feel like it is watching me," Moreno said, looking at the air above her head.

Ma Ma Liang tried her best to search for any possible anomalies in the curtain of rain, but saw no traces.

"Its head is huge, ten meters wide."

"Its body is covered in hands and arthropod limbs, and dozens of eyes, some of which are obscured. There is actually a person riding on its head."

Ma Ma Liang: "What? Describe the rider."

"About twenty years old, scrawny, wearing jeans and sneakers, with dirty brown hair that is in desperate need of a trim."

"He has been shot multiple times and is bleeding profusely, but he seems not to care at all—the wounds are in his waist, throat, and above his collarbone."

"And he is smiling."

"He... he said: 'Interesting, this is the first time I've seen this situation.'"

In the footage seen by the audience, there is only a forest silent in the rain; there is no giant monster, nor the young man riddled with bullets.

But even though "Red" did not appear, the hearts of the audience were raised.

"Holy crap, 'Red'!"

"Demons and monsters, get away! Demons and monsters, get away!"

"Damn, how many people did he kill to get shot that many times?"

"So this is the true meaning of 'When you gaze into the abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.' I hope I never see an anti-memetic entity in my life."

"Now there are two types of anti-memetic entities: one you simply can't remember, and the other kills everyone who sees it, achieving another kind of 'not remembering'..."

"Pray for Ms. Moreno. This girl is quite cute; I thought she would survive a few more scenes..."

Ma Ma Liang instantly pondered whether these gunshot wounds were a deliberately created horror effect, or if this person truly possessed some high-level anti-memetic ability that allowed him to ignore physical injury.

If it were the latter, how did he achieve this, and how was he initially injured?

However, there was a more pressing question.

"He sees you?"

"Yes," Moreno replied, fear etched on her face.

"Does he see me? Can he hear me?"

Moreno grew more terrified, seemingly at a loss: "He wants to know who I am talking to."

"Don't tell him! Don't look at him! He knows nothing about our situation! Do you understand?!"

Ma Ma Liang pulled the wireless walkie-talkie from her waist, set it to emergency beacon Protection Protection Mode, and threw it toward the direction of the Site-41 main building.

If she was lucky, it would land safely outside the suppression zone of "Containment-9429" and attract a Mobile Task Force.

"Ask him who he is."

"You... who are you?" Moreno stood stiffly, her arms pressed tightly against her body.

"He said... he said he is almost done. He said he is going to kill me."

"Damn it," Ma Ma Liang cursed. "Listen to me, we are going back to the stairs."

"If we can run to the boundary, it will wash away our memories."

"Listen to me. We have to run. Back to the stairs."

"But I can't move..."

Ma Ma Liang grabbed Moreno's arm tightly, yet she also found that she could not move.

"Try to take a step, put one foot in front of the other!"

"It has grabbed me!" Moreno's eyes bulged, her breathing rapid.

Ma Ma Liang let go and calmly analyzed the current situation.

She could neither see nor touch the spider-like limbs binding Moreno, nor the strange face that made Moreno unable to look away, nor the rider.

But she believed Moreno; they were there, real in a certain sense of "reality."

She quietly placed her hand near her waist, though not to draw a weapon—after all, this was a Safe-class site dealing with Safe-class containments, and what could she do anyway?

That rider could ignore gunshot wounds; her actions would likely be of no avail.

Ma Ma Liang seemed to have no other choice.

Moreno suddenly let out a sharp scream.

"Moreno!" Ma Ma Liang shouted. "Don't look at him! Look at me!"

"I can't..."

"You have to be stronger than this."

"I can't," Moreno sobbed.

"You are the best among us! You can see things others cannot! You have the ability to resist!"

"It is full of hatred for us, I can't concentrate. I can't see, please, don't make me look," Moreno begged.

Ma Ma Liang moved behind Moreno, pressed one hand on her shoulder to steady her, and struck the acupuncture point at the back of her neck with the other.

Moreno suddenly lost her strength and collapsed downward; Ma Ma Liang caught her just in time.

But she hadn't hit hard enough.

Moreno only fainted for a second before waking up again, falling from one nightmare into another.

She gripped Ma Ma Liang's hand tightly, unable to make a sound, her heartbeat having stopped.

Ma Ma Liang immediately turned Moreno's body over to attempt CPR, but without professional equipment, the chances of Moreno's heart restarting were extremely slim.

No one came to the rescue; the walkie-talkie clearly hadn't been thrown far enough.

After a long fifteen minutes, Ma Ma Liang finally gave up.

"Goodnight, miss. May there be no anti-memetic monsters in the afterlife, and may you not join the Foundation."

"Goodnight, miss. The world of the dead is guarded by the 'Three Brothers of Death' and will not be disturbed by anti-memetic monsters."

"Salute to those who face death."

"Goodnight, may you return to the Brass Throne."

"?"

Ma Ma Liang slumped against the corridor wall, only one last step away from leaving the area of influence of 9429.

She tried to figure out what the hell she could write down for herself now.

What the hell was that?

Moreno was killed just by seeing it!

She was so excellent, so talented!

How the hell do you fight an anti-memetic monster that only eats the best anti-memeticists?

My God, how long have we been fighting this monster?!

Just as Ma Ma Liang was cursing in her heart, her hands clenched into fists, wanting to vent her full frustration and anger, a commotion suddenly came from behind her.

She turned to look; at the end of the stairs stood a young man.

He was gaunt, his furrowed brows full of hostility, his body covered in bleeding gunshot wounds.

Ma Ma Liang saw him.

He made a gesture.

Instantly, spiders of various sizes emerged from the dark corners, flooding the corridor like a tide, reaching her knees, then even higher than her shoulders, sweeping toward her.

As they swarmed, they made a strange, organic, noisy sound, like wet leaves rubbing against each other.

Before being engulfed by this army of spiders, she had only one second, which was not enough to write down even a single word.

Moreno's sacrifice, in the end, seemed to be in vain.

She hated it!

But there was no other choice.
