Chapter 997

~6 min read 1,051 words

Ma Liang didn't comfort Adam, who was waiting for death in despair; she hurriedly removed the magazine and suddenly discovered there was only one bullet left inside.

Counting the one left in the chamber of the pistol, there were two bullets left in total, just enough for one each to commit suicide.

That's really fucking fair.

Ma Liang cursed a bunch of swear words under her breath while reloading the magazine and looking at the monster that was still approaching.

If this were World War II, facing a steel tank rolling toward them, what would a soldier in a desperate situation do?

Roar and launch one last charge?

Hug an anti-tank weapon and perish with the tank?

The monster in front of them was much more fragile than a tank; it was just a trembling pudding.

It had no heavy armor, no machine gun spitting fire, no tank cannon capable of tearing through the air, and no powerful diesel engine.

If it were anywhere else, just a bulldozer would be enough to let this damn "anomaly" experience the weight of human civilization.

But none of those conditions existed.

Ma Liang very much hoped these two bullets were two grenades, or to give her a fire axe; that would be more practical than the fire poker in her hand.

However, Adam was probably scared silly; at this moment, he had already become a trash-talk machine, muttering constantly:

"Maybe there's something worse, I think, I think..."

Adam's performance didn't seem strange in Ma Liang's eyes; he was terrified to the extreme, and his body was using some methods to vent and divert the fear in his heart.

There was nothing to criticize, and nothing to mock.

Critics who have never been on the battlefield can talk big and comment on the cannon fodder who make mistakes due to nervousness.

But if they were also sent into the trenches, they would only need to endure one round of shelling before they would find all sorts of reasons to prove that their mistakes were not a sign of cowardice.

Foundation agents were no exception.

Except for a very few gifted guys, and robots that seemed to have lost their sense of fear.

Trained agents, when facing those "anomalies" that transcend human reason and "183" cognition for the first time, don't perform much better than Adam.

Ma Liang turned her head and looked at this unrelated person who had been forced into the "anomaly" event.

This was the first time she had shifted her attention to Adam, and the next moment, her attention shifted away.

"Elevator shaft!" Ma Liang said with pleasant surprise.

"What?" Adam didn't react in time.

Ma Liang pushed Adam aside, revealing the white wall he had been blocking.

Adam also turned his head back.

There was a lock on this part that looked like a wall, and a narrow, straight gap next to it.

Ma Liang observed for a moment, raised her pistol, aimed at the lock, and fired the second-to-last bullet.

"Bang!"

Behind the wide board was a narrow space, filled with dust, the edges gleaming with a metallic luster, function unknown, but it was a vertical shaft.

One could escape from here.

"Can you climb up?" she turned back and asked.

Without waiting for an answer, she nimbly took off her jacket, bit the flashlight, and disappeared into the dark shaft.

A moment later, another gunshot rang out; clearly, she had opened the door to another elevator shaft.

"Help me! I can't climb up!"

That mass of rotting meat monster was pressing step by step; Adam had been forced to the edge and couldn't move.

"Give me your hand!"

A hand hung down from above; Adam noticed for a second and confirmed it was a human, intact palm.

"Hold on! Watch the edge! Be careful of cuts! Hurry up!"

Adam jumped with all his might and gripped that hope of life tightly.

The huge and fat monster sprinted suddenly, countless twisted fingers wriggling even more crazily—it clearly didn't intend to let go of the prey in front of it.

Adam endured the increasingly strong smell of disinfectant in his nasal cavity; this smell mixed with the choking smell of dust was truly life-threatening.

The next moment, a cold chill seeped through his leather shoes and trousers into his skin.

He realized that the monster didn't want to let him leave.

If he got any closer, he would become a bug trapped by a sundew, unable to escape, and be sucked dry.

Worse, under high tension, Adam's hands were sweating, and now he was sliding down bit by bit.

"Hold on!"

Ma Liang grabbed Adam's other arm, roared, and pulled him up a bit, then instantly let go and grabbed his wrist tightly like lightning.

Repeating this, it was like drawing water at a well, pulling up a bucket.

And below Adam, the wriggling monster took the initiative to attack; its bloated body, like surging quicksand, moved close to Adam's feet, and a circle of fingers grabbed his shoes.

A huge force came, and Adam felt something swarm up, wrap tightly around his shoes, and pull his legs down, wanting to devour him right there.

"Get away! Get away!"

Adam shouted, wanting to pull his foot out, but under the sucking and entanglement of that rotten meat, he couldn't pull that foot out at all.

In a desperate situation, he kicked the shoe with his other foot, and after some effort, he finally took the shoe off.

The flesh mass shrank suddenly and happily swallowed the prey it had obtained into its body, but as soon as the shoe was sent into its body by tentacle-like fingers, it was spat out.

Its bloated body paused for a moment, as if hesitating; the fingers on its body surface kept touching the leather shoe, sending it to the passage full of broken bones and teeth, and then spat it out again.

Seemingly unwilling, and possibly having some doubts, it explored its body upward again, and the fingers on its surface groped on the dust-filled shaft wall, constantly checking.

But it soon shrank back; with its intelligence, it couldn't understand what had happened at all.

At this time, Adam had already been pulled up, out of the danger range where the monster could pursue.
