Chapter 1: Escaping the Cannibal Tribe

~8 min read 1,479 words

When Baifeng woke up lying on the ground without a shred of cloth on his body, he realized that things were, by and large, completely ruined.

All around were foul-smelling... savages, whose own filth could serve as Armor? Their snoring rose and fell, and the fire at the cave entrance was still burning brightly.

What Baifeng could be certain of was that even if he had transmigrated to this primitive era, the others in this cave were definitely not from the same tribe as him!

Beside the fire pile were gnawed bones; judging by his professional standards as a doctor, there were at least four femurs on the ground, plus two skulls piled up, indicating that at least two people had ended up in their stomachs.

Why was Baifeng not of their tribe? Because he was still pinning down a corpse beneath him, also without a loincloth, likely stripped by them.

The person beneath Baifeng might have been a companion from his tribe, but they were already stone-cold; Baifeng's back was covered in dried blood, and after touching it, he found a fatal wound on the back of his head, yet he was still alive and well, and the wound had healed. This was likely the reason he had transmigrated here.

Baifeng had originally been just an ordinary grassroots doctor, but now he had transmigrated into the reserve rations for this Cannibal Tribe! This was even more miserable than transmigrating into Zhu Zhongba, who had just killed the Landlord's cow.

Baifeng did not dare hope for any system or modern thermal Weapons, but at least a Knife would have been nice; as it turned out, it was truly a naked start.

It was all that damned altar's fault; who knew how many thousands of years had passed, yet it was still so effective. Weren't the gods of primitive people just used to deceive uncivilized savages?

He had just been bragging, saying that even if he started from zero with nothing, he could definitely build the strongest tribe. He hadn't expected that a bird passing by would drop a poop onto the altar, a bolt of lightning would strike down, and by the time Baifeng woke up, he had ended up in this state.

If that bird had been thrown onto the altar, Baifeng would at least have had a piece of animal hide to wear by now.

The biggest problem now was how Baifeng could escape with his life.

Observing the surroundings carefully, the cave was very large, at least enough to park a semi-trailer, but the entrance was very small, just enough for one person to bend over and enter or exit.

It had to be said that the place these primitive people chose was truly good; it could shelter them from the rain, and the cave entrance only needed a fire to scare away beasts wanting to launch a night raid.

The only thing Baifeng could do now was to sneak out while they were asleep and flee this place; otherwise, when daylight came, he would truly become a dish, the kind that didn't even need to be plated.

Roughly counting, there were about thirty of these savages; there were thirteen adult males, and the rest were females, plus a few children. Don't ask how he distinguished between male and female at night; in an era without a sense of shame, let alone covering the top, many didn't even cover the bottom.

Baifeng tried his best not to make any noise, tiptoeing through the pile of savages lying about in disorder, holding his breath, not daring to be the least bit careless.

But since it was night, Baifeng did not see that piece of crumbling stone and stepped on it. The brittle shale snapped with a "Crack!", and the echo produced in the cave made Baifeng's heart jump to his throat.

But only one or two savages were stimulated by this sound; they turned over, scratched their buttocks and thighs, and continued to sleep.

Baifeng waited until the snoring returned to a regular rhythm before he dared to straighten his crouching body and continue forward.

When Baifeng reached the fire, he found the Stone Axe and Stone Knife these people used placed nearby. Although they looked like nothing more than trash in Baifeng's eyes, he, who didn't even have a pair of underpants, had no right to be picky.

Thus, Baifeng secretly picked up a Stone Axe that looked decent, as well as a Stone Knife, before walking toward the cave entrance.

But as soon as he stepped out of the cave, Baifeng was stunned; it was pitch black outside, and he didn't even know where he was, let alone where to go.

He didn't know the name of this previous body, and there were no clear memories in his mind. When he tried to think hard, substituting himself into the previous owner's brain, Baifeng felt he instantly became mentally disabled, scaring him into quickly retrieving his own mind.

There was no other way; the path ahead was unknown, and perhaps he would be eaten by beasts after walking only a few steps, but staying behind meant certain death tomorrow.

Baifeng decided to take a gamble, but he first quietly went back to pull out a piece of firewood that was burning brightly; it could provide light and drive away beasts, and furthermore, in an era without lighters and matches, making fire was a very difficult task.

Baifeng didn't know where he was going either, but although this body's brain wasn't very useful, its physical fitness could be said to be very strong, and his subconscious seemed to know where there was a place to hide until dawn.

This was probably a passive skill accumulated by the previous owner's experience despite having a poor brain.

After leaving the cave and walking for less than a minute, Baifeng used the firelight to discover that the stones on this mountain were actually reflective; upon closer inspection, it was actually coal!

It was pitch-black coal; he scraped some off with his hand, and the quality was very poor. This mountain was likely an open-pit Coal Mine.

However, this also gave Baifeng a super bold idea, which was to secretly throw this low-quality coal into the fire in the cave. Moreover, when he came out, Baifeng also discovered that this cave was not sheltered from the wind; the wind was blowing into the cave.

After considering everything, if those people discovered he had run away tomorrow, they would definitely chase after him, and since he wasn't familiar with this place, the probability of him being able to hide was not high.

It would be better to take a gamble; it would be best if these savages could be smoked to death by the coal fumes. If they couldn't be smoked to death, they would definitely be poisoned and unable to move tomorrow. The only thing he feared was being discovered while placing the coal.

Baifeng gritted his teeth and decided to do it. He then found a relatively large piece of coal, carried it to the cave entrance, and observed for a moment. Finding them sleeping soundly, he put the coal into the fire, but feeling it wasn't enough, he repeated the process a few times before slipping away.

Relying on the previous owner's subconscious—which Baifeng temporarily called "autopilot"—and after chopping wood for kindling a few times and walking through twists and turns for a long time, he finally found a small cave that could only accommodate one or two people.

Fortunately, in this era, while there were no other good things, there were plenty of trees and firewood. Baifeng seized the time to chop a pile of firewood and placed it at the cave entrance to ensure the bonfire would not go out all night.

Lying in the cave and listening to the howling of beasts in the distance, Baifeng began to consider what he should do in the future. Return to modern society? He had come here inexplicably; wanting to go back was likely harder than ascending to Heaven.

Most importantly, Baifeng didn't know exactly which time period he had arrived in, or where he was. He didn't know if it was the Neolithic Age or the Paleolithic Age.

If he was still on the land of Huaxia, Baifeng prayed that by this time, the old folks like Huangdi and Shennong had already appeared. With his intelligence and knowledge, if he went to seek refuge with the ancestors, he should be accepted, right?

At least, he wouldn't be piled up in a cave as reserve rations.

But looking at the Stone Knife and Stone Axe in his hand, as well as the living environment and diet of the savages, Baifeng felt that he would likely have to wait another few hundred or thousand years to see Huangdi and Shennong.
