Chapter 1197: Run Fast
"Run, run!"
Shaoyin and the others were in the trees they thought were safe, anxiously cheering for their companions; it was truly a race against life and death now.
Just a moment ago, they were too anxious to dare look at the situation after the explosion, but looking over now, it seemed a few had been blown down; after all, three bombs had basically landed on target.
For the Soldiers specifically trained to throw bombs, the margin of error at such a distance was very small.
The elephant herd was already in an uproar, their mooing cries echoing through Heaven, making people's hearts tremble; of the two Strong Crossbow arrows, one had hit, though it likely didn't strike the heart, because that elephant which had been hit was still rampaging with a Spear stuck in it.
The other Arrows and Spears had all caused varying degrees of injury to the elephants, and some had fallen, but now, none of these people dared to go near them, not even to deliver a finishing blow, let alone go to collect the elephants' carcasses for meat.
An elephant that couldn't find its target decided that the Strong Crossbow was its outlet for venting, charging over with a savage ram, flipping the Strong Crossbow over, and then starting to gore and trample it again, which made Shaoyin's heart ache uncontrollably.
That Strong Crossbow was too expensive to build and too difficult to manufacture; they had only brought two for this war, not just because they were inconvenient and hard to carry, but more importantly, because even Huaxia didn't have many of them, and they were too strenuous to build. Now, one had been ruined just like that; in any case, after such a sequence of events, it was definitely unusable. Even the people of the Xuanyuan Tribe felt pained; after all, such a good thing had been ruined just like that. If it had been their own, they reckoned they would be so heartbroken they would jump straight down from the tree.
"No, what are you doing! Don't go down, go back, go back!"
Shaoyin suddenly started shouting, because a reckless young man from Huaxia had actually jumped down from the tree, holding a bow and running toward that elephant. No matter how his companions shouted, he wouldn't stop.
Shaoyin had already recognized him; that was the lad who operated that Strong Crossbow. He was likely reluctant to see his Strong Crossbow destroyed, which was why he had rushed down.
Whether they were people from Huaxia or the Xuanyuan Tribe, everyone was shouting for him not to go over, but he wouldn't listen and charged forward with his bow in hand.
When he was twenty or thirty meters away, he nocked an arrow and drew his bow to shoot. He did indeed hit it, and the elephant only felt a pain, then saw this young man who didn't know his own limitations.
It happened to be full of rage with nowhere to vent, so it shook its head and charged over. The Soldier wanted to shoot one more time, but seeing such a huge creature charging head-on, much of the courage he had just had vanished.
It was too late to try to run; by the time he realized it, he was already in the air, then fell heavily, and subsequently felt his body being crushed, his flesh already pressed into the mud.
Then, he could no longer feel pain; even the fear was gone, and he simply began to scream.
After trampling, the elephant saw another Soldier hiding in a tree, so it immediately changed targets and began to ram the tree, which was not thick enough.
The tree didn't break, but it kept swaying; perhaps if it kept ramming like this, even if the tree didn't fall, it would snap.
As for the other elephants, some stayed behind to protect the calves and the injured, while the rest began to search for targets, attacking the trees wantonly.
The situation was extremely critical; fortunately, several elephants were already unable to hold on and were slowly falling down.
Seeing that the tree was about to be knocked over, because it was visible to the naked eye that the tree's swaying amplitude was getting larger and larger, and that Soldier was already struggling to hold on.
The hunter who taught Shaoyin experience made a prompt decision and said to his Soldiers: "Brothers, go down and fight! It's about time!"
He was the first to slip down the tree and began to move in a circling pattern; the hunters who worked closely with him also descended one after another, all holding Weapons and starting to look for targets.
Shaoyin no longer waited, and together with the other two, he climbed down from the tree, then prepared to go and rescue the Soldier who was being shaken by the elephant.
"Hold on tight! Don't fall off!"
While shouting, he began to nock an arrow and shot immediately when he was close enough. The elephant, having lost much of its strength, was now much slower at chasing people, and after being accurately hit by many more arrows, it suddenly felt it had no strength left; after running a few steps, it fell down.
That Soldier who had almost been shaken out of the tree was now covered in sweat; he felt his pants were a bit wet, and his head and back were soaked through. He had almost, almost been finished, and killed by his own prey at that.
After everyone's siege, those injured elephants had basically all fallen. For those that could still make a sound and move, everyone continued to supplement with arrows and Spears, but they dared not go near.
For a time, the wailing of elephants was everywhere, which was extremely terrifying.
That elephant that had been chasing people only slowed down when it saw the main force, but it didn't retreat; instead, it just watched, as if looking for an opportunity.
Xiong and Xuanyuan looked at that unharmed elephant, feeling uneasy in their hearts: "Tribal Chief Xuanyuan, hurry and have someone ask what's going on; we can't have failed, right?"
Xuanyuan also hurriedly had someone call for the Soldier who had escaped back. That Soldier could be said to have unleashed his greatest potential; now that he had survived, he collapsed, his legs trembling, and he couldn't stand up at all.
However, before he could even come over, a series of elephant cries in the distance quickly attracted that elephant back, and it almost ran back.
Xuanyuan pointed at the elephant and said: "Look, I reckon it's done. Listening to the sound, it should be going back to help."
Shaoyin had been guarding against that elephant that ran away, and sure enough, he was the first to notice. Fortunately, everyone was prepared now, and there was only this one target left. The elephant still came charging over, but before it even reached them, it was directly brought down.
The elephant's body was too large and it had a lot of blood; the blood couldn't be drained for a while and kept flowing continuously.
But everyone dared not get too close, fearing it might suddenly get up and give them another hit, which wouldn't be worth it.
Shaoyin went to look at the Soldier who had been trampled to death; it could only be said that it was a horrific sight. Fortunately, the soil here was relatively soft, otherwise, he might not even have been able to recover a corpse like this, at most just a puddle of mud.
Together with his companions, they pried his corpse out; everyone felt a bit of pity. Although he had done a foolish thing, it was after all for the sake of this Strong Crossbow, so he couldn't be entirely blamed; it was impossible to say whether it was good or bad.
