Chapter 130: Out of Control
If we look at the time now, two days is completely insufficient; let's see if three days is possible. We started digging trenches early on the second morning. We dug them very long, but fortunately, with many people, it didn't take much effort.
The excavated soil was transported to both sides using a Handcart to pile it up. We dug a total of four such trenches and didn't finish until the afternoon. I originally thought about just covering them up like that, but seeing bamboo nearby, I cut some more, sharpened them, and stuck them inside. It would be even better if they could pierce the soles of the elephants' feet.
After setting them up, we covered the top with a layer of tree branches, then covered the branches with Grass and leaves. This way, when the soil was placed on top, it wouldn't leak through. Finally, after covering it with soil and waiting for a while, the color gradually became the same as the earth.
To avoid the tribesmen falling in, we left three paths in the middle where people could run, and stuck bamboo on both sides as markers so they wouldn't run off course. As for whether this would alert the elephants? Baifeng believed the elephants weren't that clever yet.
It was still early before dark, so it was better to try and lure the elephants to see. Baifeng and the others brought three jars of canned peaches, which could be considered a huge investment. The taste of peaches combined with honey could drive them crazy, let alone elephants.
It was just that we didn't know if the elephants' trunks were sensitive enough to smell it, so they planned to take two jars over first to test it, and at the same time take an empty jar to lure them; otherwise, they couldn't run while carrying full jars.
The elephants were on a hillside, curling their trunks to eat leaves. A few people carried the jars over, while most of the others followed far behind with a Spear, fearing that if the elephants attacked, they could also play a rescue role.
When they were not far from the elephants, they uncovered the jar lids and let out a roar. A few elephants heard the sound, turned their heads to look, saw that they were just a few monkeys, lost interest, and continued eating.
The tribesmen didn't give up and continued to harass them with sound. Perhaps the scent drifted over, and one bull elephant actually stepped forward and walked over.
Because this bull elephant was truly too large, it kicked up a cloud of dust as it walked. Baifeng could see that the legs of those few tribesmen were shaking, and they began to retreat. One couldn't blame them; even if Baifeng went, he couldn't do much better.
The closer they got, the stronger the scent became. The bull elephant grew a bit anxious and started to trot over. The few elephants behind also discovered the good stuff and started chasing after them, fearing they would be too late and have nothing to eat.
The few tribesmen, seeing the elephants getting closer and closer, were truly too scared to bear it, so they immediately threw the jars down and ran for their lives. Fortunately, the empty jar hadn't been thrown yet.
Soon, the bull elephant reached the jars and tried to use its trunk to curl up the peaches to eat, but they were really too small, so it used its trunk to suck up the meat and juice together and send it into its mouth.
The few elephants that came later also joined the battlefield of snatching, but there was only that little bit. Let alone sharing, they couldn't even stand in a circle. Smelling the scent, they were uncontrollably irritable. Then they saw the few people running for their lives, as well as the jars they were carrying in their hands, so they simply ignored the little bit on the ground and started running wildly to chase them.
People really couldn't run as fast as those few elephants. Baifeng saw that the situation was about to spiral out of control. They were originally behind the elephants, but now they had turned around and were chasing in their direction. The few tribesmen could only hear the elephants' footsteps and trumpeting, and were so scared they didn't dare look back, running even faster than they did during training.
Seeing that they were about to charge over, Baifeng simply let everyone scatter, and then once the elephants came over, they would start attacking directly, without waiting to lure them into the Trap.
After receiving the order, the group quickly scattered on the plain. The four elephants chasing them didn't care about the scattered people at all and only stared at the one with the jar in his hand. Seeing that they had entered the attack range, Baifeng roared at him to throw away the jar.
That person was so scared he almost forgot which hand the jar was in. After shouting a few times in a panic, he finally let go of the jar. When the jar hit the ground, it didn't break; it seemed the quality was quite good.
Seeing that the jar had dropped, the elephants slowed their speed and switched to a trot. When they reached the jar, they curled their trunks around it, only to find that there was nothing inside. Angrily, they threw the jar straight into the sky.
Seeing the elephants stop, it was the perfect time to attack. Baifeng blew a whistle, everyone raised their Spear Thrower, and then threw them forward. Hundreds of spears flew toward the four elephants.
Most landed on the ground. The stone spears didn't pierce deep or just broke the skin and fell off; only the Iron spears were firmly embedded.
The few elephants were covered in spears, both pained and angry, roaring loudly. Only one elephant had a more serious leg injury; its front leg collapsed and it couldn't run. The other three started to charge at the humans they could see.
Because they were standing quite scattered, they chased this one and then that one, but in the end, they didn't catch a single one. One was even stabbed a few more times by humans in a safe position. Slowly, its stamina failed, and it bled quite a bit, so its movements slowed down.
However, the two elephants in the distance that were eating the jars, which were also the two strongest bull elephants, heard the wails of their kin and started to go crazy, coming to take revenge at an even more terrifying speed.
The distance, which wasn't very far, could be said to have been covered in an instant. Three people from Baifeng's tribe were being flanked by two elephants. Panicked and without a path, they ran in front of the two mad bull elephants. Before they could react, they were tossed into the sky in one go, spun twice, and fell to the ground, unable to make a sound.
One was pierced directly by a tusk and hung there, unable to get down. Another was trampled to the ground by the elephant behind. In the end, the three people were trampled by the four elephants until they turned into a pulp of flesh.
The tribesmen saw this scene and their eyes turned red; fear turned into anger. Could more than a hundred people not kill these few elephants? So, they one after another threw all the spears they were carrying on their backs. Immediately, the elephants turned into hedgehogs.
However, the elephants' combat power remained because their skin was too thick. These injuries didn't damage their internal organs and were not fatal, though their speed had slowed down a lot.
The group attacked while running, leading these few elephants toward the direction of the Trap. The elephants didn't notice; the people on both sides were getting further and further away from them, and they were only chasing the few people directly in front.
Those humans, even while being chased, didn't scatter and run, but squeezed through the position where two bamboo sticks were stuck on both sides. Even at the brink of death, they were still so troublesome. The elephants, blinded by anger, didn't care about anything at all and stepped forward directly, but their feet seemed to step into empty air.
Once the front feet stepped into empty air, the elephants instantly lost their balance. Coupled with the excessive speed, the entire elephant body lunged forward, and their front legs were snapped directly. Even as strong as the elephants were, now they could only let out wails.
Two stepped into empty air, while two larger ones happened to cross the not-so-wide trench and continued to chase, but they also stepped into empty air at the second and third trenches. Now, all the elephants were unable to move.
The tribesmen who had long since scattered to both sides retrieved more hidden spears. After carefully approaching, they aimed at the elephants' necks and threw them. Because they were afraid of a desperate counterattack before death, no one dared to go over to deliver the finishing blow, waiting until the elephants had bled dry and died before going to the side.
