Chapter 133: Snow Disaster
In his groggy state, Baifeng seemed to hear Sui calling for him to get up and drink soup; he didn't even know if he had actually drunk any, but in any case, he felt almost entirely dizzy.
When Baifeng woke up, it was still bright outside, and he didn't know how long he had slept; the main thing was that he was truly starving, otherwise, in his current dizzy state, he could have continued sleeping.
Seeing Baifeng get up, Sui had already thoughtfully heated up some rice porridge with meat added; Baifeng slurped down two bowls, and only after having something in his stomach did he feel his body warm up and start to feel more comfortable.
After finishing, Baifeng wiped his mouth, opened the wooden window, and looked through the Glass at the Snow still falling outside, then turned to ask Sui: "How long have I slept? It couldn't just be a short while, could it?"
Sui took the bowl and shook her head: "You have already slept for a day and a night; it is already the afternoon of the second day. You, who never snore, were snoring thunderously this time. You didn't react when I called you to get up and eat. If I hadn't held you and fed you a bowl of porridge, you would probably have starved to death by now."
"A day and a night already, huh," Baifeng muttered to himself. The Snow was still falling, having not stopped all night. How severe must this cold wave be? It was likely going to cause a disaster.
Speaking of the disaster, Baifeng hurriedly asked Sui how the cattle and chickens in the tribe were doing, and if they had frozen to death. In this kind of weather, if insulation measures weren't done well, they might not be able to hold out.
Sui said that the tribespeople had laid down a lot of dry Grass last night, so they were fine for the moment, but the Snow was too heavy, and the entire tribe was almost about to be buried. Fortunately, because there was a lot of rain here in the summer and the terrain was flat, everyone had built their foundations very high just like Baifeng, and the houses were built up from the ground, so the doors could still barely be opened this morning. If it snowed for another day, the houses might be completely buried, let alone the cattle pens and chicken coops.
Sui also said that the doors to several warehouses had already been buried and couldn't be opened, and the same went for some of the tribespeople's doors. They had a hard time getting food today; the Snow had already risen past their thighs to their buttocks, and now they couldn't even get the food out.
After listening, Baifeng couldn't care about his aching body; he put on his Mongolian Robe, donned a hat that could cover his ears, and thick gloves. As soon as he got off the kang, he had to go out and check. Now was not the time to lie around; they could not leave their fate to Heaven, they had to save themselves now.
Fortunately, the door opened inward; if it had opened outward, Baifeng wouldn't even be able to open the door now, and in the end, he would either freeze or starve to death, or be smothered by the Snow.
As soon as the door opened, a pile of Snow rushed in, and a strong wind immediately drilled its way in as well. The room, which had finally gained some heat, instantly became as cold as the outside. Sui also hurriedly put on her clothes and then ran to the side of the Fireplace.
He didn't know what the situation was with the other tribespeople; everything had been fine in the morning, but there were no longer any traces of where Sui had walked outside, as they had all been covered by new Snow.
Baifeng estimated that the Snow was nearly a meter thick. Fortunately, the tools were all in the room. Baifeng picked up an Iron shovel to shovel a path for himself, throwing the Snow to both sides like digging a trench. After digging out a bit of a path, he hurriedly told Sui to close the door to stay warm, while he dug by himself.
Sui was unwilling and insisted on coming out to help Baifeng dig. Baifeng felt bad for her and didn't want her to, so he told her: "I'll come back in after digging for a while. You keep the fire in the room burning bright so there's fire to warm up by when I return, and boil another pot of porridge for me to drink later."
After much persuasion, Sui finally agreed to stay behind. Baifeng continued digging alone; he just needed to knock open the door of Xiong, who lived closest. He had a big family, and his wife alone was worth two of Sui; she couldn't be treated as a weak woman.
Baifeng only felt his face stinging from being hit by the Snow particles, and the wind was howling in his ears; he couldn't hear anything but the sound of the wind. His body's soreness hadn't faded yet, and at this moment, his clothes were soaked with sweat, yet he felt chilly outside. He didn't dare to stop; if he stopped, his body temperature would plummet, which would only be more dangerous.
He finally dug to Xiong's house. His door opened outward, and with such thick Snow, even if he had great strength, he couldn't push it open. His foundation wasn't as high as Baifeng's, and now the Snow had buried nearly half the door. Looking at the marks, it seemed he had tried to push it, but hadn't been able to.
Baifeng put in extra effort and cleared the last bit of Snow at the doorway. The people inside seemed to hear movement outside and also tried to push the door. Now there was almost no Snow left, so it was pushed open very easily, but the cold wind that rushed in the moment it opened made them unable to even open their eyes.
As soon as the door opened, Baifeng hurriedly squeezed in. There was still heat inside the house; once the door was closed and with the fire in the Fireplace, it would soon warm up again. It was just that because they were buried outside, the kang couldn't be heated, and it was icy cold.
The ones who opened the door were Xiong's wives. Xiong was still fast asleep on the bed; he had exerted the most effort when pushing the cart, so it was understandable that he hadn't woken up yet. However, there was no time for him to continue resting. Baifeng went over and pushed him twice, and Xiong rubbed his eyes and woke up.
He had slept just about enough; Xiong sat blankly for a dozen seconds, regained his senses, and then shivered, becoming completely awake.
There were no Windows, so the room was very dim. Baifeng had Xiong's wife light two candles to be able to see clearly in the room. There were six people in the small room. Xiong was not surprised by Baifeng's arrival, only asking if something urgent had happened, otherwise Baifeng wouldn't have come.
Baifeng took off his robe and sat by the Fireplace to dry his sweat; it would be more comfortable to go out this way. At the same time, he told Xiong about the trouble the tribe was currently in. Xiong jumped down without a word, found his tools, and was about to go out to shovel Snow and call people.
However, as soon as he got on the ground, his stomach growled, and he felt he had no strength in his whole body; it seemed he had slept until now without eating a single bite.
Baifeng told Xiong's wives, whichever one it was, to hurry up and boil meat porridge so that Xiong could eat and then shovel Snow together. They all had to work; it could be said that this Snow was now related to the survival of the tribe.
To speed things up, three pots were used to boil porridge at the same time. Fortunately, the Fireplace was big enough. Xiong still had a lot of grain here, which was his private property, but they couldn't worry about that now. Baifeng told any one of them to stay behind and keep boiling it after they finished eating, to avoid other tribespeople also sleeping until now without eating and having no strength when they woke up. Now that the food was made, they would have something to eat immediately, otherwise, they would have to keep waiting like this.
After a simple exchange, no one spoke anymore. Except for the bubbling sound of the porridge and the wind outside, the already dim room felt even more oppressive. Baifeng was very anxious, and Xiong was also rubbing his hands in a hurry.
Baifeng couldn't wait any longer. Once the sweat on his body and in his robe was dry, he put it back on, feeling all warm. He didn't wait for Xiong; he was going to go out and continue digging. He told Xiong to come out immediately after he finished eating, as they couldn't afford to delay even for a moment.
