Chapter 1587: To Fight or Not to Fight
Tuomao could not help but curse: "Damn it! If you want to throw your life away, go do it yourself. How we return to the tribe is our business, not yours. I will not let my Soldiers accompany you to your death!"
Wulian stood up from the ground, looking down at Tuomao with an oppressive air due to his much greater height; saliva dripped from the corner of his mouth, and his gaze was quite unkind: "Tuomao! Don't forget! I was sent by the Tribal Chief! Everyone here must answer to me! If I say you are to go and attack Huaxia, you must go! Do you understand?!"
Tuomao took a step back; after all, Wulian's aura was still quite intimidating, but faced with the survival and safety of the tribe, it was impossible for Tuomao to compromise.
"Wulian, no matter what you say, I will not agree. Either you people go yourselves, or you go back to find the Tribal Chief and bring more people over. With just this few people now, what can we do? You said it yourself, they have over a thousand Soldiers, and their Weapons are better than ours."
You saw the corpses of Heshuo and the others; their Weapons were better, quite sharp. When they cut off heads, they didn't even need a second strike. With these Weapons of ours, how are we supposed to fight? Can we win?"
You have also seen it; we have only this many Soldiers and these kinds of Weapons. You told me before that Huaxia was just a small tribe that had already been beaten into nothing. And now? Now this is the situation, how are we supposed to fight?"
I advise you to return to the tribe, ask the Tribal Chief for more men, and we can fight together later. It is impossible to fight now."
Wulian still would not yield: "What if I insist that you go and fight?! Do you dare to disobey? If the Tribal Chief finds out, what will you do then?"
Tuomao waved his hand, and a large group of Soldiers surrounded him, each one picking up their Weapon. Wulian had not expected Tuomao to be so bold.
"Tuomao, how dare you do this? Do you know that you are betraying the Wulenge Tribe? You are not listening to the Tribal Chief!"
Tuomao was indifferent: "Look at where we are first. It is empty and desolate. Never mind one person dying, even if a hundred or a thousand died, you wouldn't be able to find their corpses. The Tribal Chief, far away at the Shenhu Tribe, how would he know you were dead?"
Wulian, I am not trying to kill you, nor am I betraying the Wulenge Tribe, but there is truly no other way. Think carefully, how could we possibly defeat Huaxia? I do not want our tribesmen to die in vain, and I especially do not want you, the number one Soldier of the Wulenge Tribe, to die."
I am going to flee with these tribes now, hide far away so that Huaxia cannot find us. You take your men and hurry back to Shenhu. Find the Tribal Chief early and ask for more men. It would be best if you could get the Soldiers of the Shenhu Tribe to come. Only then can we defeat Huaxia. Huaxia is not as weak as was said before; you have already seen the corpses here. Wulian, think about it carefully."
Although Tuomao spoke very gently, the Weapons the Soldiers never lowered said it all; the implication of a threat was self-evident—it was to force Wulian to leave.
But Wulian was not afraid at all. Mainly, he knew that if he could not take revenge or defeat Huaxia, and just returned like this, all the honor that belonged to him would vanish. "Number one Soldier" would be nothing but bullshit. His brothers were all dead, and he would always feel guilty. He would feel that he was too weak and incompetent, a cowardly fox. Even if he died, he had to try, he had to charge in.
"No, Tuomao, I must fight. Or, you take the other tribesmen and leave, and hand the Soldiers over to me. I will go and fight. I am not afraid of death; even if it is just to delay Huaxia, that is enough."
Seeing Wulian so determined to die, Tuomao did not want to stop him. It was better to let him be killed by the Huaxia people. If he really let him go and he somehow managed to return to Shenhu alive, he would certainly not say anything good about these tribes. When he traded with the Shenhu Tribe later, he would inevitably face setbacks and might even be punished.
"Put down your Weapons," Tuomao said to the other Soldiers. "Then we shall follow Wulian's wishes. Leave the Soldiers behind to prepare for the siege on Huaxia; it can also be considered buying time for our tribe to retreat. Let the women and children drive the livestock and leave first."
Tuomao's sudden change of tone shocked Wulian, and it shocked the others as well, especially the Tribal Chiefs. They felt that not killing Wulian right here was already Tuomao being soft-hearted; how could he follow Wulian's wishes?
"Like this, Wulian, you take your Soldiers and get ready first. I and the other Tribal Chiefs will start arranging the Soldiers now, and then arrange the direction of the retreat. Once everything is arranged, we will go together to attack Huaxia."
Wulian felt uneasy: "Will you really fight? You won't lie to me?"
Tuomao pointed at the sun: "The sun hasn't set yet. If we go to fight now, we have no advantage. Wait until the sun sets, then we will sneak over. We are more familiar with this place and know how to hide well. We will fight then. You can keep an eye on us now; you don't need to fear us running away."
The simple-minded Wulian believed him and decided to listen to Tuomao for now and wait until nightfall. He began to look for a suitable stone to sharpen his Long Sword properly. He also wanted his Long Sword to be sharp enough so that he could better avenge Heshuo and the others.
The Weapons of Heshuo and the others were also returned to Wulian by Tuomao. Those Weapons were quite good, even better than Tuomao's. Originally, Tuomao had said he hoped to let his Soldiers use those Weapons so that the chances of winning would be higher, but unfortunately, Wulian refused. He refused quite bluntly; he believed that these Soldiers of the Tuomao Tribe were not worthy of using the Weapons of Heshuo and the others.
This remark was noted by all the Soldiers nearby; Wulian should not have put on such airs at a time like this.
After Tuomao and the others walked a bit further away and were sure Wulian could not hear them, a Tribal Chief hurriedly asked in confusion: "Tuomao, are we really going to fight? Are we fighting or not? I didn't understand at all!"
Tuomao sneered: "Fight my ass. Let Wulian go to his death; we aren't going. In a while, arrange for some Soldiers to stay behind, tell Wulian we are splitting up to move, and only let Wulian take a small portion of Soldiers to follow. Once all the Soldiers have passed a hillside, stop following. Take advantage of the darkness to retreat back.
The few following Wulian will also slowly disperse, keeping their distance from Wulian. When it feels like they can retreat, they will retreat, leaving Wulian and his men to go up on their own.
If Wulian and his few men charge the Huaxia camp, then Huaxia definitely won't sleep well tonight. They will be afraid, and they won't think that we are going to run."
