Chapter 21
Baifeng was determined to promote a complete social concept within the tribe, and to maintain a society, one needs appropriate political ideas; the traditional "Heaven Earth Sovereign Kin Teacher" was the most suitable means.
"Heaven and Earth" were ready, but "Sovereign" did not yet have a complete concept, so it was roughly equivalent to the Tribal Chief; to truly implement this, one had to wait until primitive accumulation was sufficient—store grain widely, and claim the title of king slowly.
As for "Kin" and "Teacher," Kin comes first, but currently they only know their mothers and not their fathers, and even the bond between mother and child is not deep enough; wanting them to understand "parents" requires first promoting a family-based lifestyle, which will still take a long time.
As for "Teacher," Baifeng was now going to show all the tribespeople what a teacher is.
The people working on the plains, from morning till night, could produce a massive amount of earthen foundations, but it was still far from enough to house over four hundred people.
As for the savage Baifeng had taken a liking to, because his partner had heatstroke, he was no longer working, and Baifeng had tried teaching him some simple, basic Medicine; the savage learned very quickly, so Baifeng made up his mind to take him as a student to change the current state of having no medicine in this era.
The sky grew dark, and everyone packed up their things, chatting and laughing all the way back to the camp; Baifeng had already finished cooking dinner for them, so they didn't need to go back to the Old Camp to eat, and after eating the food Baifeng made, these savages were even less willing to go back and eat that unpalatable, unsatisfying soup.
Returning to the camp, all the tribespeople were eating; the savages, who usually scrambled for food the moment they saw it, now wouldn't even look at the food eaten at the Old Camp.
Inspecting the fruits of their labor, because they were moving, Baifeng no longer considered the issue of Sustainable Development regarding the fish here, so he expanded the fishing area, and even if the fish weren't very big, they could be collected directly.
The wooden racks set up were full of Salted Fish rubbed with salt; Baifeng couldn't count them, but seeing the quantity, it was perfectly fine for all the tribespeople to eat for three days, and before moving, Baifeng estimated they could catch enough fish to eat for a month.
The fired Pottery had already been distributed to the tribespeople for use; although they couldn't yet manage one pot for every four people, firing another kiln tomorrow would be enough. Baifeng also called a halt to the work of making pottery pot blanks, instead having them make Pottery Jars and thick-walled pottery vats to store grain and make pickles.
The gathered wild vegetables were piled casually in the camp in several large vegetable mountains; Baifeng had forgotten to tell them how to process and pickle them. Anyway, they were just left to dry in the open space, and the sun had already dried out most of the moisture.
Baifeng picked out a few savages who looked relatively clean and explained to them how to pickle; it was nothing more than adding salt and rubbing, but the most important thing was to make them wash their hands clean, and they were strictly forbidden from using their feet to stomp. Baifeng was uneasy and immediately made them wash their hands on the spot; the water for washing hands slowly turned from black to transparent, and he didn't stop until even the gaps under their fingernails were clean. Baifeng required them to reach this level tomorrow as well to pickle vegetables, with the Shaman supervising.
After giving all the instructions, Baifeng went to find a few tender Bamboo Leaves, took out his own personal pot, used the bamboo leaves as Tea Leaves, added water, and boiled a pot of tea.
Immediately after, Baifeng called all the tribespeople over and told them he was going to hold a very important ceremony, witnessed by the gods, similar to a sacrifice.
Hearing this, the Shaman was the first to get anxious, quickly finding his feather crown and staff, wanting to preside over this ceremony. Baifeng thought about it and realized he really couldn't direct and act in it himself—it would be too strange—so he agreed to the Shaman's request, but first explained the process and requirements to the Shaman.
The Shaman, who had never heard of such a ceremony, listened very carefully; he felt this must be a grand ceremony that could communicate with the spirits, and this new ceremony and new method must be learned.
Baifeng moved "Heaven and Earth" to the middle of the platform and placed it in a relatively high position; he should have lit Incense and candles, but there were none at this time, so he lit a pile of cypress branches. Beside it, he used leaves to cushion an offering of a Salted Fish, and that was considered complete.
Baifeng sat cross-legged in the front left position of the "Heaven and Earth Stone," but as soon as he sat down, he felt very uncomfortable, because sitting like this exposed the male mark completely; although he was used to not wearing pants, sitting like this put it right on display, and everyone was watching.
So Baifeng quickly stood up again and dug out the wolf skin he hadn't had time to process earlier; fortunately, it was clean, and Baifeng tied the wolf skin in front of himself before sitting cross-legged again.
Signaling for the Shaman to start the ceremony, the Shaman threw a few cypress branches into the fire, then dragged over the savage Baifeng had taken a fancy to, making him stand in front of Baifeng.
Baifeng said: "I intend to take you as my apprentice and teach you medical principles; are you willing?"
Baifeng had already asked this question long ago, and that little savage had also said he was willing; now it was just going through the motions.
Hearing the savage say he was willing, the Shaman made him kneel in front of Baifeng; at this moment, Baifeng felt there should be a chair, but since it was a spur-of-the-moment idea and the tribe was still destitute, he wouldn't be so particular—once they were wealthy, he would definitely put on a good show.
Baifeng looked at his apprentice and said: "Since you have taken me as your teacher, I bestow upon you the name 'Medicine'; from now on you shall be called Medicine. I will teach you knowledge and treat you as my own son; you must respect me and treat me like a father, do you understand?"
Medicine hurriedly said: "I understand, but what is a father?"
=???? (???????) Oh no, Baifeng forgot they had no concept of a father, let alone treating him like one; if he learned from the beasts, it would be a disaster if a son grew up and bit his own father to death.
Baifeng had no choice but to preach the concepts of family and parents to them in advance. He looked at Medicine, then at the bewildered tribespeople below the platform, and said: "Heaven and Earth created all things, which is the result of the blending of Yin-Yang Differentiation; Heaven is Yang and is the father, Earth is Yin and is the mother. Humans are the same, men are Yang and women are Yin."
"Therefore, true humans should be one man and one woman living together, combining to produce offspring, rather than being as chaotic as you are now; that is why you can only be called savages for now."
"Parents are the people who gave birth to you; you must respect them. If there is food, give it to your parents first. When parents grow old or are seriously ill, you should serve them with care; this is Filial Mourning. My requirement for you is that you treat me just as you would treat your father."
During the day, Baifeng had already told Medicine about the concept of Yin-Yang, so Medicine quickly understood what Baifeng meant, but the tribespeople were completely confused, and so was the Shaman.
The Shaman wanted Baifeng to explain in more detail, but Baifeng knew it was completely useless to tell them now; this had to be done through subtle influence, so he ignored the Shaman and told him to continue the ceremony.
The Shaman gloomily scooped two bowls of bamboo leaf tea from the pot and handed them to Medicine; Medicine didn't understand and almost put it directly into his own mouth.
Baifeng quickly made him hand the tea over; Baifeng offered the first bowl of tea to Heaven and Earth, and then the Shaman gave Medicine the other bowl. Medicine understood a little this time and, imitating Baifeng, respectfully handed the tea over.
Taking a symbolic sip and then setting the bowl down, Medicine, under the Shaman's guidance, clumsily kowtowed to Baifeng three times. Baifeng quickly helped him up, appearing extremely concerned.
Then he pulled Medicine to kneel before Heaven and Earth, and the two of them kowtowed three times together. This ceremony ended with Baifeng feeling ashamed, the Shaman excited, Medicine bewildered, and the tribespeople even more bewildered.
Baifeng pulled Medicine up and decided to take him for a bath tomorrow to get closer; after all, this was the first direct descendant of his makeshift team.
