Chapter 275: Small Matters Need Not Be Reported

~8 min read 1,454 words

After a long delay, Baifeng and his group finally returned to the tribe. The people of the Zisheng Tribe were just like everyone else who had just arrived at the tribe; they were curious about this and that, shocked by the scale and prosperity of the Baifeng Tribe. At times like this, it could bring a great sense of satisfaction and honor to everyone in the Baifeng Tribe, for after all, having someone praise the tribe they had built was indeed a very exciting thing.

The first thing Baifeng did upon returning was to find his two precious sons. As his two true kin, they were the most important people in this world to Baifeng, the ones he could never abandon.

Bai Yulong had already begun to manifest some independent traits. Upon seeing his father, whom he hadn't seen for many days, he was very excited, yet he could still restrain himself in his actions. Changle was different; he hung directly onto Baifeng's neck and wouldn't come down, so Baifeng happily carried Changle around.

The Shaman, having received news that the Tribal Chief had returned, searched everywhere for Baifeng. Not finding him at home, he went to the place the two children loved to play most, certain he would find the Tribal Chief there. Sure enough, he found the group teasing birds beside the aviary.

Seeing the Shaman in such a rush, Baifeng knew there must be something to report. However, since no tribesmen had reported any bad news upon his return, it was likely just a matter of other areas needing Baifeng to make a decision, rather than any other trouble having broken out.

Because Hui was not here, Baifeng had left the two little ones for Changxu to watch. Because of his merit in raising birds, Changxu had long since become a tribesman of the Baifeng Tribe, and had even been allocated a house and a wife. He lived extremely comfortably and no longer had those messy, bad habits from before.

His bird friends were few, and Baifeng would not force him to do anything out of the ordinary with them. They were all fed with his own grain and did not count as tribal property, so Baifeng was at ease leaving the children in his care.

Baifeng did not intend to let the two children come into contact with tribal public affairs yet; coming into contact too early was not a good thing. He wanted the children to have a complete, relaxed, and happy childhood, and now was the time to study knowledge well. Baifeng did not want to engage in that feudal monarchical style.

What's more, he was still young. As long as he didn't die in battle and the tribe didn't collapse, he estimated he could live for another fifty or sixty years. In the later generations, this would be the age of someone who had just graduated from university and just stepped into society; life had only just begun.

The lifespan of the tribesmen was also slowly increasing, and the tribe had not seen anyone die of old age. In Baifeng's view, their tribe was entirely composed of young and middle-aged people; there wasn't a single old person, making it an extremely youthful tribe.

Walking and chatting with the Shaman, he asked about the recent events in the tribe. The Shaman took out the small notebook from his bosom where he recorded things and told Baifeng one by one, in exhaustive detail, from the small matter of whose water pipe was clogged to the big matter of whose family had a baby, until Baifeng was annoyed by the listening.

Because everyone had a poor grasp of the extent of their power, subconsciously, even though they had been granted the authority by Baifeng to manage such matters, they still felt that Baifeng should know everything, and it would be best if Baifeng could resolve it personally.

Baifeng had not managed these matters, and they had resolved them well. Ultimately, it was because they felt Baifeng was Heaven, the most powerful, and they lacked confidence in their own abilities. Baifeng had spoken about this many times, but it seemed it would take a long time for them to adapt.

Baifeng did not want to hear about trivial matters, so he told the Shaman to skip them and talk about important things.

The Shaman's memory was not very good, so he had to flip bit by bit through the notebook that only he could understand, and then read it out to Baifeng.

The biggest matter now was the development and construction of the road to the New City. After such a long period of construction, the road to the selected site of the New City was already half open. They hoped Baifeng could go there to inspect it in person and see if the project met the standards.

The person in charge of the Construction Department spent most of their time inspecting the road construction site and even did the work themselves. Baifeng thought highly of this quality, even if it wasn't strictly necessary.

But Baifeng could not tell them not to do the manual labor that lacked technical content, otherwise, once this precedent was set, perhaps the leadership would eventually adopt the style of only giving orders and not doing any work, and it wouldn't do to be detached from reality.

Baifeng agreed and asked the Shaman to continue to see if there were other matters, so he could arrange his time.

Then the Shaman spoke of the most important thing for which he had sought Baifeng this time: he said that while their Hunter Team was exploring and developing the territory in the upper reaches of the Dahe, they had discovered traces of the horses the Tribal Chief had mentioned. Although only the bones remained, the skull with some dried skin was very similar to the animal Baifeng had described.

Baifeng was immediately excited; this was a truly major event. He hurriedly asked where the skull was. The Shaman said it was kept in a special small warehouse, and then went to the office to get the warrant to take Baifeng to see it.

This thing called a warrant was something Baifeng had specifically created for various warehouses. Because they had no locks, the safekeeping of the warehouses could only rely on people; otherwise, if the doors were just left open, they wouldn't even know when things were lost.

Each warehouse was guarded by two Soldiers. If it wasn't a particularly important warehouse, like a firewood shed, two people were enough for a whole row of connected warehouses.

Other important warehouses had two people per room. These Soldiers were professional gatekeepers, with three teams taking turns guarding for a day. Unless they saw the Bronze Warrant personally carved by Baifeng, they would never open the warehouse door, not even if Baifeng came in person.

The only one Baifeng could open at will was his own personal warehouse. To avoid confusion, Baifeng had established this rule that even the Tribal Chief could not enter without a warrant.

But in reality, the Soldiers wouldn't truly ask Baifeng for a warrant; they felt it was unreasonable and didn't dare to stop him. However, they did dare to stop Chinv, Sui, and the two children.

Letting the Shaman take the warrant was to ensure that all the Soldiers on duty understood their responsibilities; once they got used to it, it would be fine.

The Shaman picked the warrant for that warehouse from the drawer of his office desk and handed it to Baifeng. Then, when Baifeng showed it to the two Soldiers, they worked together to push open the heavy wooden door.

While retrieving the warrant, the Shaman also notified the people from the Military Department working in the office next door, asking them to find the hunter who had discovered the bones to go along.

Looking at the skull placed on the wooden shelf, Baifeng confirmed it was the thing he was looking for. Whether it was a horse or a donkey, he couldn't be entirely certain from the skull alone, but it didn't matter much. Even if it were a donkey, it could bring earth-shaking changes to their tribe.

The skull was very large, but the body was missing. When asked, the hunter said the bones of the body were also there, but because moving them was too strenuous, they had only brought the skull, which had the most obvious features. Baifeng was very satisfied with what they had done this time.

Then he asked about the size of the bones. Through the description, Baifeng judged that the physique of this "horse" was quite good and would definitely meet his requirements.
