Chapter 77: One-Sided Slaughter

~7 min read 1,396 words

When Xiong was a hundred meters from the gate, the gate had already been opened, waiting. As soon as Xiong and the others panted their way inside, the gate was immediately shut and bolted.

Heichang saw the prey he was chasing enter a strange earthen wall and was momentarily baffled. He had almost caught up, so how could such a thing exist on this Wasteland?

Baifeng told them to rest first, while he took dozens of women up to the city wall. They set up shields and held Wooden Spears in their hands, giving the Heichang Tribe the illusion that his tribe had no men left, as Xiong had just shared his plan with him.

Baifeng felt this plan was very feasible, but to deliver a powerful blow, the enemy had to be close enough to the city wall.

Heichang stopped first to observe. Although they had been a bit carried away chasing their prey, their stamina was now somewhat lacking. Even though they seemed to have found the location of the prey's tribe, looking at this high wall made them feel something was not right.

Baifeng stood forward with the women, holding the Wooden Spears tremblingly. Some were pretending, but a few were truly a bit afraid. After all, the Cannibal Tribe was below the city. Hearing they had to go to the battlefield, they followed along, crying and holding their Wooden Spears, without the slightest resistance.

It was just that, watching the enemy in the distance, one woman's hands shook so much she couldn't even hold her spear. It fell to the ground, and she hurriedly bent down to pick it up, only for it to tumble right off the city wall at the slightest touch.

Consequently, she cried even louder. The Zhique Tribe in the distance had been a bit suspicious, but seeing that the only ones who came out to meet them were a man leading a group of women—and that the women couldn't even hold a spear steady—they were relieved.

Not to mention the men of their own tribe, even the women mocked the useless woman on the city wall. Once they conquered this tribe, they would definitely cut off her arm and eat it right in front of her, just to see what she would cry like then.

There were plenty of stones on the Wasteland. A woman picked one up, wrapped it in a Sling, and after swinging it around with force, flung it out. The stone flew toward the city wall at high speed, but it was already too far by the time it got there. The stone hit the city wall weakly, yet the woman on the wall was still scared out of her wits.

In fact, inside the city wall, hundreds of fully armed Soldiers were already prepared. In places on the wall invisible to the enemy, it was packed with Wooden Spears and Bamboo Spears, just waiting for the enemy to reach the foot of the wall before throwing them all at once.

Seeing that this tribe's combat power had been fully exposed, the people of the Zhique Tribe no longer needed the Tribal Chief to give the order; they began to advance on their own, throwing stones along the way to intimidate the people on the wall.

When the stones were able to reach the top of the wall and cause damage, Baifeng led everyone to raise their Bamboo Shields. The people of the Zhique Tribe didn't think much of their attacks being ineffective; they figured that as long as they pushed those pieces of wood aside, they could begin the slaughter and then have a feast.

When the enemy reached the foot of the wall, Baifeng still did not attack. His ears were filled with the enemy's laughter and insults, as well as the crying of the women beside him. The Hunter Team led by Xiong had already recovered; they were just waiting for Baifeng's order to climb the wall and attack the enemy to avenge their fallen tribesmen.

It wasn't until they began to batter the city gate that Baifeng gave the order for everyone to prepare to attack.

After his tribesmen rammed the gate several times with no reaction, Heichang finally felt a bit panicked. It wasn't until a whistle sounded on the city wall that alarm bells rang in Heichang's heart. Sensing something was wrong, he abandoned his tribesmen and began to flee frantically.

At the command, all Soldiers climbed the wall. Those who were to hold shields did so, while others shot Arrows through the gaps in the shields or stood up directly to throw their Spears.

After one round, dozens of the Zhique Tribe were already dead or wounded. They had originally planned to climb the wall if the gate wouldn't open, but this turn of events caught them off guard.

They stopped attacking and resisting, instead scattering and fleeing. Seeing that their formation was in chaos and they had no offensive power left, Baifeng ordered the Bamboo Shields lowered and began a full-scale attack.

Strong Bows were drawn, and a hundred Arrows flew out at once. Even though the hit rate wasn't even one in ten, the high-density volley still caused heavy casualties.

Wooden Spears and Bamboo Spears were thrown out as if they cost nothing. The Bamboo Spears had average power, but the sharpened Wooden Spears could pierce the enemy directly. The Zhique Tribe had always come as hunters, never expecting to be treated as prey and attacked wantonly by others. Yet, they dared not resist and could only think of fleeing.

Heichang ran the earliest and fastest. By now, the range of the bows and spears was no longer enough, and Heichang was very adept at dodging attacks. Because he held a conspicuous silver Changdao, the people of Baifeng's tribe easily identified him as the Tribal Chief.

Furthermore, there was the blood feud of their tribesmen to avenge, so everyone focused their attention on Heichang. It was just that they couldn't hit him, which made them very annoyed; they absolutely could not let him get away.

With no other choice, Baifeng brought out the two Strong Crossbows his tribe possessed. He used one, and Xiong used the other. Aiming at Heichang, who was still dodging left and right while fleeing, they pulled the triggers.

The spear-like arrows flew out. Baifeng's shot was a bit off and didn't hit, but it scared Heichang out of his wits.

Just as he moved to run in another direction, he felt his body lurch forward. His chest felt stifled, and he spat out a mouthful of blood. He tried to keep crawling, only to see his own body pinned to the ground by a spear.

There was no pain, only fear. Heichang tried hard to get up and run, but the blood flowed more and more; he could no longer hold on and collapsed limply.

Seeing that the primary enemy was dead, he felt relieved. More than half of them were already lying on the ground, unable to get up, but over a hundred were still fleeing.

The range of the bows was no longer enough, but those people had come running and surely didn't have much strength left now. However, he still had many Soldiers with plenty of energy, so he opened the main gate and let his tribesmen give chase.

Unfortunately, before they had chased very far, another group of people emerged from the forest. It was their own Fishing Team, each holding a Weapon, and they began to encircle the enemy with the Soldiers who had exited the city.

Seeing they could not escape, the remaining people of the Heichang Tribe intended to fight to the death, but their weapons were far inferior to those of Baifeng's tribe. The people of Baifeng's tribe opened their Long Bows and fired a round, ending the battle while still out of range of the Zhique Tribe's stones.

It turned out Baifeng had been worried, thinking it was a large tribe; he hadn't expected that even with the women and children included, there were so few of them. Now, the battle had ended simply.

Baifeng did not have them all killed; he left a few survivors. Baifeng wanted to ask some questions, such as why they only had one Iron Knife when so many of his own tribesmen had died.
