Chapter 99: Come and Drink Soup
He let that wandering savage eat some things casually; in any case, wild vegetable roots could fill his stomach, and the savage wasn't picky, so he also drank two bowls of the Baifeng Tribe's bone soup (no meat, just bones crushed and boiled).
Fortunately, these things were not at all precious in the Baifeng Tribe; otherwise, if he had to be killed later, wouldn't the food that had just entered his stomach be wasted?
The message had been delivered, the food had been eaten, and before leaving, he even begged for a discarded, chipped Pottery Bowl from the Baifeng Tribe, which Baifeng naturally gave him generously; the savage was profuse in his thanks and was about to leave.
Originally, Baifeng had intended to kill him with a Crossbow Arrow after he left the city gate, but after thinking it over, doing so still didn't seem quite right; it was easy to corrupt the tribesmen, and it wouldn't do to turn a perfectly good savage into a savage without quality or rules.
He was different; he understood restraint and understood boundaries, and this time it was a last resort for the survival of the entire tribe.
Seeing that the savage was about to leave the city gate, Baifeng suddenly called him to a halt and said, "I also have a piece of news that I hope you can help pass on to other tribes; of course, you can stay and eat some more."
Hearing that there was such a good thing, the wandering savage sat down on the ground immediately and wouldn't leave, waiting for Baifeng to arrange for him what kind of information was to be passed on.
The thing Baifeng wanted to say was fake, something he had thought of on the spot just to keep this savage here. "Our tribe is relatively short of women, so when you go to other tribes, you can tell them that the Baifeng Tribe can use food and Weapons to trade for women; we only want beauties, do you understand?"
The wandering savage nodded, indicating he had noted it down; the tribesmen waiting on the side thought the Tribal Chief really wanted to trade for more beauties, so they immediately shouted "hehe" happily, though in reality, the Baifeng Tribe already had far more women than men, and every man could find a woman and have the opportunity to pass on his genes.
Those strong, capable men not only had more than one wife themselves but would occasionally seduce women without husbands or be seduced by those women, without even needing to pay a price; Baifeng knew this but was too lazy to intervene, as at least those people's genes were better, and the children born were stronger.
As for those men who were incompetent and thin, they were not well-regarded; no woman looked at them, and if they wanted to find a woman to sleep with, they had to live frugally, scraping together a portion of their own rations to trade with a woman for the chance to sleep together once.
Baifeng felt that doing this was offensive to public morals and immoral, but upon closer reflection, where would there be public morals in this damn Kingdom? It was done this way before he arrived, and now at least they were restrained and didn't mess around in the wild, at least going into houses.
The wandering savage could only move about in the outer city; he could not go to the core area of the Baifeng Tribe, so he could not see the other conditions of the Baifeng Tribe clearly.
He knew even less that the Baifeng Tribe now had a hundred acres of fertile fields, no shortage of food, a circle of cattle that could reproduce endlessly, no shortage of meat and fur, and also had a Fish Pond, vegetable gardens, various kilns, an iron-smelting workshop, and so on; the Baifeng Tribe was very wealthy, but they just couldn't let outsiders know, and could only give them the feeling that the Baifeng Tribe was just an ordinary hunting tribe, only with better Weapons and more prey so they could eat their fill.
However, the damn Baoxi wanted to put the Baifeng Tribe on the fire to roast, but the Baifeng Tribe had no ability to deal with those large tribes, so they could only try their best to pretend to disappear on the Wasteland.
The message to be passed had been said, and now it was time to give him food; although he was already full to the point of bursting, who would care about eating a little more? Could eating too much kill you? Baifeng knew that people could be stuffed to death, but he didn't say it; people in this era only knew that not eating would lead to starvation, but they had never seen anyone stuffed to death from eating too much.
Baifeng naturally wouldn't think of stuffing him to death; it was too wasteful. There were plenty of ways to kill invisibly; for example, by the wooden fence next to the vegetable garden, he had seen small mushrooms growing on the rotting wood.
There were many edible fungi, and even more poisonous ones, but there were only a few major categories that could be fatal in small amounts; very coincidentally, what grew on that dead wood was one of those poisonous mushrooms that could be fatal in small amounts, the Galerina.
Baifeng had once specifically bought popular science books to see which local wild fungi were edible, so this mushroom, which was small in size but highly toxic, left a deep impression on him.
There were many wild mushrooms in the Wasteland, and many were mushrooms that were also eaten in later generations, but Baifeng dared not pick them because he knew that mushrooms had a detoxification process; mushrooms that were edible in later generations might not necessarily be edible now. For example, enoki mushrooms (actually silver needle mushrooms; enoki mushrooms are yellow) had been eaten in later generations, but they still had toxicity, colchicine toxicity, though they were safe after high-temperature treatment; it was better to eat less.
Baifeng picked three fingernail-sized poisonous mushrooms, and fearing that the savage had too strong a constitution and that these few wouldn't knock him down, he picked a few more.
He sniffed them, and there wasn't much of a smell, but Baifeng dared not taste them; perhaps even one lick would be more than he could handle.
He took a handful of crushed bone powder, threw it into the pot to boil, and after boiling on high heat for half an hour, Baifeng smelled that it was very fragrant, so he threw those few mushrooms in as well, mashing them with a wooden stick to let the mushroom juice fully blend into the bone soup.
He filled a full bowl and let a tribesman carry it over to that savage, but perhaps the tribesman smelled how fragrant it was and couldn't help himself, taking a small sip while Baifeng wasn't paying attention; Baifeng heard the sound and turned his head, seeing the tribesman had already swallowed it, and was immediately both shocked and angry.
He snatched the meat soup from his hand, not caring even if some spilled, put the soup on the ground, and kicked the tribesman; the man knew he had made a mistake and squatted on the ground obediently, not daring to resist.
Baifeng was very anxious, and just as he was thinking of a way, he saw a bird feather on the ground, so he picked it up, pried open the tribesman's mouth, and stuffed the mud-stained feather into his mouth.
It reached his throat and scraped a few times; the tribesman retched, but didn't vomit it out, and looked at Baifeng with some fear—he had only stolen a sip of soup, there was no need to treat him like this, right? The tribe had plenty of bone powder.
Before he could speak, his mouth was pried open again; this time the effect was very good, and it sprayed out like a water faucet. Fortunately, Baifeng was agile, and when he saw the pre-vomit motion, he took a step back and stayed far away, so the vomit didn't touch him.
Not knowing if he had finished vomiting, he intended to poke him again; the tribesman had tears streaming down his face, his nose and mouth covered in vomit, and seeing Baifeng coming again with the feather, his throat itched, and he vomited again on his own.
Seeing that he should have finished vomiting, Baifeng told him to go back and drink plenty of boiled water, insisting he must drink a lot, and if he didn't want to die, he should listen to him.
The tribesman didn't understand, but still nodded with tears in his eyes.
Only half the soup was left in the bowl, but there was still a little in the pot; Baifeng topped off the soup, and to ensure no other tribesmen would steal a drink of what was left, he poured out the bottom of the pot and then smashed the pottery pot.
Only then did Baifeng carry the bowl to the wandering savage; the savage drank it and kept saying it was fresh, and he was so full he could barely stand, but as soon as he finished drinking, Baifeng urged him to leave quickly, saying that if he didn't leave, he would die in their tribe.
