Chapter 2: Life Safety

~7 min read 1,213 words

This data is better than the four vehicles initially given.

It runs on electricity, has high range, huge storage space, and its durability is endless.

Turned misfortune into fortune.

Cheng Shuili looked at the brand-new shopping cart before her, its basket flashing with LED lights, and it had a small speaker looping: "Joyful Family Supermarket, everything 50% off… Joyful Family Supermarket, everything 50% off…"

No……

Cheng Shuili fell silent for two seconds, wanting to say something but finding nothing to say; after a moment she cracked a smile.

"Forget it, at least it's electric."

She jumped onto the shopping cart, hit the accelerator, and sped off down the road to the hypnotic "everything 50% off" ad.

The road was wide, the space echoing with the "everything 50% off" sound; Cheng Shuili opened the panel, her mouth twitching as she watched rows of data.

【Player: Cheng Shuili

ID: AAAJCCJ8888

Username: to be set

Vehicle: "Supermarket Promotion Exclusive" electric shopping cart (current charge 1000%)

Health: 1 (a human with terrible physique, chronic late nights, irregular schedule, and long-term unhealthy eating…? How haven't they died yet.)】

Cheng Shuili: "Laxative, just revived after dying."

And what does this 1000% mean? Surely it's not another bug.

She continued scrolling down.

【Strength: 1 (noob)

Stamina: 1 (hey sis, have we ever exercised? Do we even get winded climbing stairs?)

Agility: 1 (can run, but not fast.)

Overall combat power: 0 (the first zero in the survival world)

Supplies: none】

"Congratulations, player Cheng Shuili, for achieving the ultimate newbie noob achievement and earning the unique title 'Noob Savior.' Shall we make a server-wide announcement?"

"Effect of equipping the title 'Noob Savior': stabilizes health at 60, eliminates risk of sudden death, raises all attribute points to average human levels. Equip it?"

Cheng Shuili: "?"

What? Ultimate newbie? Noob Savior?

She smirked; the title's name wasn't great, but the buff was fantastic! She immediately chose to equip it.

Upon activation, Cheng Shuili clearly felt she had come back to life. Now all her attributes were at 20—not bad.

This is the server's first title ever.

Cheng Shuili likes to show off, but she doesn't want to use her real name to do so.

Cheng Shuili set her username to "Wu Ya Zuo Fei Ji," then opted for the announcement.

【Congratulations to player Wu Ya Zuo Fei Ji for earning the server's first title! Hurry up, players, gather supplies and strive to survive!】

Cheng Shuili narrowed her eyes, smiling at the announcement, then noticed the chat channel below—most people were still clueless, while a few asked how to get the title.

"Huh? It's just the start—how'd you get that achievement?"

This is the bewildered type.

"Wu Ya Zuo Fei Ji? I'm the Elephant Leg Kick! Roughly speaking, we're long‑lost kin! Big shot, take me with you!"

This is the "recognizing relatives" type.

"What the heck is going on? Where is this? I don't want to play a survival game! I want to go back to 007!"

This is the "going crazy" type.

Cheng Shuili tugged at the corner of her mouth, realized the channel held no useful info, and promptly closed it.

She drove the electric shopping cart down the road, the "everything 50% off" ad blaring on repeat, echoing across the empty highway. Under a dark‑red sky, the road stretched like a gray long snake toward the horizon.

This godforsaken place had no inhabitants, no man‑made structures—except the road beneath her feet.

After two hours, Cheng Shuili had seen nothing; she glanced at the chat and saw many people had loot crates, the contents scant but edible.

This sun isn't toxic, but it still burns.

Cheng Shuili lifted her head, shielded her eyes with her hand, peered at the sun through her fingers, then lowered her hand and squinted. About a hundred meters ahead, on the right side of the road, a dark square object loomed.

As she drew nearer, the object's outline gradually sharpened.

A wooden crate, roughly half a meter tall, its surface somewhat worn, with a noticeable seam on top.

【Wooden supply crate discovered. Open it?】

The system prompt popped up at the right moment.

Supply crate!

Cheng Shuili braked the shopping cart; the ad cut off abruptly.

She hopped off, cautiously circling the crate. Its exterior gave no clues—whether it held monsters or supplies could only be told by opening it.

"According to game rules, the crate might hold a surprise or a scare…" Cheng Shuili stroked her chin, thinking, "but since we're in the newbie protection period, the scare chance is lower…"

"Tsk," she clicked her tongue impatiently.

Just kidding.

She didn't bother agonizing over it.

Not open a crate on a survival road? Wait to die of thirst or hunger?

Cheng Shuili had no other choice!

She took a deep breath, stepped back a pace before opening, then rummaged through the shopping cart—it was nearly empty, but the cart's own parts should be removable.

Cheng Shuili felt around the cart's base for a moment, her fingers finding a loose metal pipe—one of the basket's support rods—which could be removed without affecting the cart's structure.

She gave it a hard tug, accompanied by a crisp "crack", and a metal pipe about sixty centimeters long was wrenched off by her sheer force.

"Not bad, it's quite handy."

Cheng Shuili hefted the metal pipe, turned and walked toward the supply crate, she gripped it with both hands, used the tip to pry open the lid forcefully, then quickly stepped back three steps.

A yellow-and-green fuzzy ball shot out of the crate and slapped directly onto Cheng Shuili's face.

She frantically scraped at the sticky creature on her face, but it was soft and limp, impossible to shake off, and even tried to crawl into her nostrils.

"Ugh, what the hell is this thing!"

She clung tightly to that disgusting mass, finally got hold of it, and flung it to the ground in one motion.

The monster went "pah-pah" as it hit the ground, writhed twice, then slowly crawled toward her, resembling the slime often seen in her past life's cartoons; it looked utterly harmless, even a bit cute.

Cheng Shuili wouldn't be fooled by its innocent appearance; that disgusting feeling still lingered, she grabbed a metal rod from the shopping cart and dealt it a vicious blow.

The slime instantly split open, its body flickering like a crashing program for a few moments, then with a "poof" it turned into a puddle of green slime and lay completely still.

"Congratulations, player Cheng Shuili, for achieving the server-wide first-kill achievement and earning the unique title 【First Executioner】. Shall we make a server-wide announcement?"

"The title 【First Executioner】 grants +10 to all attributes. Equip it?"

"As the first player on the server to slay a monster, reward: Silver Treasure Box ×1."

Cheng Shuili panted, gazing up at the silver treasure box descending from the heavens, then at the metal pipe in her hand coated with strange slime, she burst out laughing: "Hahaha... this is far more thrilling than overtime work!"

She finally felt a genuine sense of apocalyptic survival!

In response, Cheng Shuili said: "Awesome."

Whether she dies here, starves to death, or gets eaten by monsters, she refuses to go back to coding and fixing those piles of shit code!
