Chapter 104: Is This a Resentful Spirit?

Lin Yifan and Hong Shaoqiang slowly swam toward the spot where the giant octopus had sunk; at this moment the turbidity in the water had dispersed, and their vision became clear.

After they approached, they saw a massive creature lying still on the seabed.

Several dozen thick, long tentacles lay limp and spread on the ground, like a small mountain sprawled before them.

Facing such a massive creature, even if they could logically confirm that this thing was utterly dead.

But Lin Yifan still couldn't help gripping his machete tightly, warily scanning every detail of the octopus, fearing it might suddenly launch a counterattack.

"It really looks dead." Hong Shaoqiang said in a low voice, his tone finally relaxing a bit.

Lin Yifan nodded, his gaze falling on the several arrows deeply embedded in the octopus's head.

The arrows' fletchings still trembled slightly, as if retaining the echo of the recent battle.

He took a deep breath, swam near the octopus's head, and lightly poked its body with his machete.

"Finally we've dealt with this thing." Lin Yifan finally let out a sigh of relief.

But just then, he suddenly noticed that the giant octopus corpse before him was shrinking bit by bit!

Finally, the giant octopus corpse completely vanished, leaving behind, astonishingly, a human corpse!

"What... what is going on?" Hong Shaoqiang stared at the scene, dumbfounded.

Lin Yifan shook his head, his face also full of shock, because what was happening before his eyes truly shook his worldview a bit.

Although his worldview was shaken, he quickly began to think, why exactly was all this happening?

At that moment, Ruan Qingtan also swam over with Xiao Hudie.

Ruan Qingtan looked at the corpse, observed it carefully for a moment, then exclaimed in shock:

"Quickly look, this isn't a human corpse—human ears aren't that long, and the skin color is wrong."

Lin Yifan and Hong Shaoqiang, hearing that, hurried over to take a closer look.

Only then did they discover that, although the corpse looked human at first glance, its skin was pale blue—only because they were soaking in the water at the moment had they overlooked this detail.

Moreover, the corpse had long, slender ears and features that were somewhat other, resembling Europeans from Earth Star.

However, its appearance was even more beautiful; even many celebrities on Earth Star could not compare to it.

"Wow! Is this a blue sprite?" Just as Lin Yifan and the other two stared at the corpse, baffled, Xiao Hudie beside them suddenly spoke up curiously.

And Lin Yifan at that moment also snapped back to his senses, saying in amazement:

"Well, I'll be damned, this thing really does look like a blue sprite."

"Never mind whether it's a blue sprite or not." Hong Shaoqiang, not particularly concerned, turned his head to look at the surrounding broken walls and eaves, and couldn't help but say:

"We might as well think about why a octopus that big, when it died, turned into such a broken thing?"

"And our instance task is to rescue resentful spirits, right? But so far we haven't seen any resentful spirits, nor even found the supposed underwater town—just this ruin. What should we do next?"

But Lin Yifan this time suddenly widened his eyes, face full of delight, and said:

"I get it! This is actually a resentful spirit!"

"Huh? What do you mean?" Ruan Qingtan asked, puzzled.

At that moment, a string of information appeared on the light screen before Lin Yifan.

【Instance Opened: Sunken Town Underwater (Activated)】

【Number of Resentful Spirits Purified: 1 (Unpurified Resentful Spirits: 299)】

【Instance Time: 5 hours 28 minutes】

【Special Task Reminder: The flood came without warning; perhaps it was a natural disaster, perhaps man-made, but one thing is certain—behind this flood lies another secret!】

Although there was no extra information, from this limited data they could confirm that the giant octopus they had just killed was one of the resentful spirits.

At that moment, the corpse resembling a blue sprite underwent another change.

A faint azure light flashed, the corpse gradually faded, and finally turned transparent.

And as it turned transparent, the corpse opened its eyes and slowly sat up!

"Holy shit, a fake corpse?" The usually steady Hong Shaoqiang was startled this time, quickly pulling Xiao Hudie back, then gripping his axe and staring warily at the transparent corpse.

And after the transparent corpse stood up, it actually bowed deeply to them, its face showing gratitude.

Then the corpse turned into a cluster of pale blue specks of light, which swiftly dissipated in the water.

As the corpse completely disappeared, a pale blue treasure chest appeared in the spot where it had been.

"What... what is happening? Could it be that the resentful spirits formed by the townspeople have now turned into various water monsters, and by slaying those water monsters we are essentially evolving the resentful spirits!" Ruan Qingtan stared agape at the scene, then pointed at the treasure chest and exclaimed in shock:

"Look, this treasure chest is actually blue—could it be a blue treasure chest?"

Saying that, her eyes lit up, and she exclaimed excitedly:

"Speaking of blue treasure chests, I haven't opened a single one yet! I have no idea what goodies might be inside a blue treasure chest!"

"That's probably it." Lin Yifan affirmed Ruan Qingtán's guess, then looked at the chest and shook his head, saying:

"But this treasure chest isn't a blue treasure chest; I've received blue treasure chests before, and their color was deeper, and their material differed from this one. This should be the kill reward the instance gives us after we defeated a resentful spirit."

After saying that, Lin Yifan stepped back a bit and said to Ruan Qingtan:

"You open the treasure chest! Even though I don't know if your talent helps with opening instance chests, I believe in your luck!"

Hong Shaoqiang also chimed in: "When it comes to opening treasure chests, I only defer to Sis Qingtan!"

"Er..." Ruan Qingtan hesitated a little, but seeing how much they trusted her, she took a deep breath and said:

"Alright! Then I'll give it a try!"

Then she asked the two: "By the way, do you guys have anything you particularly want? According to my talent, when I open a treasure chest I need to think about what I want in order to boost the chance of getting it."

"Well..." Lin Yifan pondered briefly, then said:

"Then try to see if you can get advanced cast iron; I'm currently lacking that."

He had no qualms about it; his shelter needed to upgrade to level four, and advanced cast iron was essential for that.

As for Hong Shaoqiang and Ruan Qingtan's shelters, they hadn't even reached level three yet; the materials they needed could be supplied by Lin Yifan using the synthesis room, so there was no need to waste them on opening treasure chests.
