Chapter 311: More Dead

~6 min read 1,089 words

A full one hundred billion people!

That's not just a hundred people; among so many, how could there not be a few Luck Children?

Even the District where Lin Yifan and his group are has that many lucky people.

"Of course there are," Yin Mian shrugged, speaking in a tone that sounded indifferent but was actually full of desolation:

"You may not know, although this world has countless races, many of which are exceptionally gifted—some with powerful physiques, others with strong magical talent—but we humans are not that fortunate; our innate constitution simply can't match theirs."

"However, correspondingly, the learning ability of our race is beyond what they can imagine. Our foundation is weak, yet we can rely on study to master powerful magic, forge strong bodies, and we also possess great reproductive capability."

"In theory, our race is the most suitable creature to survive in this region, but in reality, few humans manage to survive in this world, because we are too adept at internal strife!"

"As long as we can eat and stay alive, we love to vie for power, to scramble for our own interests, to fight to the death, and this makes our race the one that suffers the greatest internal losses."

"Yet in this world, a race that cannot unite cannot become strong! And humans, stubbornly, never learn the lesson."

Lin Yifan deeply understands this point.

During the early days after arriving in this world, everyone lived day by day, even unable to meet in person, yet the scramble for power never ceased.

Lin Yifan fell silent for a moment, then forced a bitter smile and said, "Perhaps that's human nature! Even at the brink of life and death, we can't change our inherent flaws."

"Nevertheless, such people are always a minority. On our original planet we also survived countless crises; some may be selfish at heart, but there are also plenty of people of great righteousness."

"So I believe we will unite and move forward together!"

Yin Mian sighed, his gaze turning to the noisy crowd in the distance:

"It is because I see your unity that I chose to help you; seeing you now cherish each other, think of one another, fight for each other... it makes me can't help recalling our early days."

"The early days?" Lin Yifan asked curiously, "What were your early days like? Were they the same as ours?"

"They were still different!" Yin Mian's voice, tinged with nostalgia, spoke slowly:

"When we first arrived in this world, we also endured countless natural disasters—torrential storms, earthquakes, collapses, extreme cold and heat—we went through all of them, only the order differed from yours."

"These disasters killed many of us, but back in those early days, many of us still survived!"

"When we first arrived, we also supported each other like this. Unfortunately, the good times didn't last; after the first batch gained power, everything changed."

A chill rose in Lin Yifan's heart.

He understood the deeper meaning in Yin Mian's words—when power gaps appear, hearts become unbalanced.

"What happened afterward?" he couldn't help asking.

"Later?" Yin Mian sneered, "Later comes endless internal wars, betrayal, slaughter. The strong enslave the weak, the weak unite to resist, then new strong ones appear... the cycle repeats until the whole civilization collapses."

These words sent a chill down Lin Yifan's spine. He turned to his companions sharing supplies and suddenly realized how fragile the current harmony was.

"So—" Yin Mian suddenly turned, his eyes beneath the mask staring at Lin Yifan, speaking each word deliberately:

"You must make a choice."

"What choice?"

"Is it to establish a fair order, or to repeat our mistakes?" Yin Mian's voice was low and solemn. "You are now their leader; every decision you make concerns countless lives."

Lin Yifan fell silent!

He naturally understood what Yin Mian meant, and precisely because of that understanding, he had never desired to achieve a team.

He only wanted to find a few comrades he could trust, and form a small squad.

But by now, unknowingly, he had become the spiritual leader of the entire District.

Perhaps that claim is somewhat exaggerated, but at least among these people, he is the leader!

If he cannot unite these people, who knows what the future holds!

In this lesson, Lin Yifan felt an unprecedented weight on his shoulders.

He recalled the many conflicts when managing the camp, and the grievances born from unfair distribution.

In an instant, a chill rose in his heart!

"What should I do?" he asked, somewhat bewildered.

He had never managed anything; he was just a low-born nobody, unfamiliar with leadership and even less with making so many people obey.

Thus he was confused and wanted to retreat!

But Yin Mian did not answer directly; instead he asked back, "What do you think, why have I survived until now?"

Lin Yifan pondered briefly, "Because... you're strong enough?"

"No," Yin Mian shook his head, saying lightly:

"It is because I chose solitude. I do not attach to any faction, nor build my own. This way I am not drawn into internal wars nor become a threat to others."

"And as long as I can sustain myself, I can survive in this world, living easily and freely."

"But correspondingly, I have no clan to rely on, no team to support me; if one day I am harmed by someone, no one will stand up for me or avenge me."

This answer left Lin Yifan stunned. He suddenly understood why Yin Mian always kept to himself.

"But you are different," Yin Mian continued, "You have so many people, destined to form a collective, and the survival of that collective depends on its rules."

Just then, a quarrel erupted in the distance.

Both turned their heads and saw two teammates arguing over the ownership of a piece of equipment.

"Look, it has begun," Yin Mian whispered, "When interests are at stake, contradictions surface so abruptly."

"You are the leader of this group; only you can step forward to resolve this conflict, and to do so you must establish your own rules."

Yin Mian turned his gaze to Lin Yifan, his eyes deep as he said:

"Now, what do you intend to do?"

Lin Yifan clenched his fists, a hint of struggle appearing on his face.

After a moment, he took a deep breath and strode forward.

He knew the moment of his test had arrived.

And he made his choice; at least for now, he could not let these people descend into chaos.
