Chapter 5: Cobra Attack

~8 min read 1,502 words

Moreover, after chopping trees for so long, Lin Yifan was already so hungry his chest was sticking to his back.

From last night until now, he had only eaten that handful of Wild Blueberries in the morning.

Water, on the other hand, he had plenty to drink—after all, it was raining!

The Raincoat on his body would condense droplets of water; he just needed to pluck a tree leaf to collect them and he'd have drinking water.

Although the amount wasn't much, it was enough to quench his thirst.

Moreover, he had made a detour back to the Safe House midway, placing the Wood and Stone from his Space Ring inside the Safe House.

Although the Space Ring had 15 cubic meters, which sounded like a decent area, when storing bulky items like Wood, it couldn't actually hold that much.

And the most important reason he returned to the Safe House was to take that previously empty Treasure Chest and place it under the eaves to collect water.

A person could go without food for a few more days.

But without water, in two or three days he'd be done for!

He had to keep his water supply sufficient.

After Lin Yifan placed the Bronze Box down, when he entered the forest for the second time, he didn't head west like in the morning, but instead went north.

The species in the northern forest were about the same as those in the west.

After felling yet another Japanese Cedar Tree, his stomach, which refused to play the empty-fortress strategy any longer, finally became too much for Lin Yifan to bear.

But after searching from west to north for so long, besides that earlier Wild Blueberry bush, he had only found a handful of wood ear mushrooms.

He hadn't found any other food or water, which left him quite helpless!

Clearly it was the climate of the Jiangnan Region, yet the variety of living creatures here was obviously far more limited.

Probably the settings of this Survival World meant that edible species were genuinely few and far between.

After he stored the Basic Wood he had just chopped into his Space Ring,

he leaned against a nearby Pine Tree, plopped down on the ground, and then took the Wild Blueberries out of his Space Ring.

After eating two big handfuls, his cramping stomach finally felt a little better.

But no matter how delicious Wild Blueberries were, they were still just wild fruit—eat too many and they got a bit cloying.

Not to mention, while the stuff could replenish a person's energy, it still wasn't a staple food or meat.

Nearly 20 hours without any staple food or meat—for someone like Lin Yifan who loved meat and carbs, it was practically driving him crazy!

Just as he had eaten a few more handfuls of blueberries and was preparing to continue searching for supplies and Treasure Chests,

he suddenly heard a faint rustle not far away.

Lin Yifan's heart immediately tensed; he promptly took out the Broken Cloud Bow, nocked a Feather Arrow on it, ready to loose at any moment.

Only then did he carefully stand up behind the tree, stealthily peek out to look at the source of the noise.

He immediately saw, about ten meters from him, a cobra as thick as an arm slithering toward him.

The moment Lin Yifan saw this cobra, cold sweat instantly broke out on his back.

This thing was highly venomous!

If it bit him even once, he could basically log off for good!

And judging from this cobra's path of advance and its constantly darting forked tongue, the thing was clearly coming straight for him.

Should he run?

No, he couldn't run!

Cobras would chase people, and judging by this snake's speed, he might not be able to outrun it.

Besides, this spot was less than 200 meters from the Safe House; having a venomous snake prowling around here was far too dangerous!

The Thatched Hut could keep out Wild Boar, but it might not be able to keep out snakes.

This thing could squeeze through any small hole.

If he didn't deal with it, he wouldn't sleep soundly even at midnight!

Moreover, although a cobra was venomous, its meat was a rare delicacy.

So, if only for the sake of his stomach, he had to take care of it!

After only a brief hesitation, Lin Yifan unhesitatingly put his bow and arrow back into his Space Ring.

The Piercing Cloud Bow was powerful, and Lin Yifan was quite confident in his archery skills.

But this thing was a snake!

Shooting a snake with a bow and arrow was far too difficult!

So, he had to use another method.

After thinking for a moment, Lin Yifan suddenly recalled that when he was a child living in the countryside, his grandfather had taught him a relatively safe way to grab one.

All he needed was a Long Wooden Staff and a towel!

He didn't have a towel, but he was still wearing a set of Sleepwear; the material was close to a towel, so it should work about the same.

As for the Long Wooden Staff, he actually had one on hand!

Earlier while exploring the west side, he had spotted a perfectly straight piece of yellow rosewood, and on a whim had chopped it down.

He had cut out the straightest middle section, about three meters long, and used it as a walking stick.

When passing through grass or low shrubs, he could also use it to knock off dew or beat the grass to startle any snakes.

Now it was perfect for catching a snake!

He tied the removed Sleepwear to one end of the staff by its sleeve, letting the hem of the Sleepwear hang down naturally.

Then he held up the staff and carefully approached the cobra.

He didn't stop until the staff was close enough to reach it.

Then, holding the staff, he gently swayed the dangling Sleepwear slowly above the cobra's head.

The cobra, which had been slithering forward, stopped in its tracks, its head pulling back slightly, then suddenly opening its mouth and lunging with two sharp fangs to bite at the dangling hem of the Sleepwear.

Seeing this, Lin Yifan's heart leaped with joy.

The instant the cobra lunged and bit into the sleepwear, he immediately yanked the sleepwear upward.

At once, the cobra's two fangs pierced through the fabric of the sleepwear and hooked firmly into it.

Lin Yifan hurriedly lifted the wooden stick a little higher, and the whole snake hung from the sleepwear, writhing nonstop.

The snake's head was also struggling desperately, trying to break free.

But when the snake's mouth gapes wide, the upper fangs are exposed straight out.

Once the fangs had pierced into the fabric, the teeth and the fabric sat at a downward perpendicular angle, making it impossible for the snake to break free no matter how it tried.

Back in the day, plenty of folks in the countryside on Earth Star used this method to catch snakes — it worked every single time.

The bold ones could, at this point, pull back the pole in their hand and then simply grab the snake's head barehanded, catching the snake directly.

This way the snake stays alive, and you can sell it for a higher price.

Lin Yifan didn't care whether the snake was alive or dead — he was going to eat it anyway!

But he did care about the sleepwear!

To keep the sleepwear from being badly damaged or soiled, he simply grabbed the snake barehanded.

However, once he had it in his grip, he immediately pinned the snake to the ground and chopped off its head with the axe.

After the snake's head was severed, Lin Yifan didn't dare toss it aside right away, fearing the severed head might still have a nerve reflex and bite him back.

He held it in his hand for several minutes, confirmed it was thoroughly dead, then plucked a few large leaves, carefully wrapped the snake's head, and stored it in his space.

Although there isn't much meat on a snake's head, the venom fangs and venom glands inside its mouth are good stuff — used right, they can save your life.

And after losing its head, the snake's body didn't die instantly either; it writhed wildly on the ground for a long while before finally slowly losing its vitality.

Just as the snake's body died completely, a faint light suddenly flashed beside it, and a grey-white Treasure Chest appeared.

【White Treasure Chest】 (Can be opened)

Lin Yifan looked at this Treasure Chest, and his eyes immediately lit up!

He then began to wonder — what on earth was going on with this Treasure Chest?

He remembered very clearly that there had definitely been no Treasure Chest here before.

The Treasure Chest only appeared after the cobra was thoroughly dead!

Could it be that killing wild beasts causes a Treasure Chest to drop?
