Chapter 383 - 382: Because of a Woman?
A little while later, He Lang came out of his office and went to the restroom to splash some water on his face.
Xue Xingjun had been keeping an eye on him. Seeing him come out with slightly wrinkled clothes, Xue Xingjun followed.
"Brother-in-law, did you sleep in the office last night?"
He Lang glanced up at him. "Yeah. What’s wrong?"
Hearing this, Xue Xingjun became even more certain of his suspicions.
"Brother-in-law, you didn’t get into a fight with my sister, did you?"
He Lang’s eyelids drooped slightly. He didn’t answer, but instead returned to his office.
His silence was the best answer.
As soon as Xue Xingjun realized they’d fought, he immediately followed He Lang into the office and even closed the door.
"You two have always had such a great relationship, haven’t you? How could you guys fight? Did you do something to make my sister angry?"
He Lang sat down. "Are you done? If you’re done, get out and go to work."
Xue Xingjun suddenly grew anxious. "No, I mean, you two fought so badly that you didn’t even go home, and you’re not even worried about it."
He Lang looked at him. "It has nothing to do with you."
"How does it have nothing to do with me? Have you fallen out of love with my sister? I knew it! The saying is true: men get corrupted by money. It’s talking about guys just like you."
He Lang’s brow twitched. "When did I ever say I don’t love your sister? What did I do? How have I been corrupted? You’d better watch your mouth, kid, or I’ll fire you."
Xue Xingjun snorted. "I’m not scared. If you really don’t want my sister anymore, would you still want me as your brother-in-law? I know I only have this job because of her."
He Lang was so exasperated he laughed. "I provide you with good food and drink, and yet someone else gets all the credit? So I’m the bad guy no matter what I do, is that it?"
Xue Xingjun’s eyes darted around, realizing he might have gone too far. He Lang really was very good to him.
"Well... then what exactly happened? If you tell me, maybe I can give you some advice."
He Lang scanned him up and down, then said contemptuously, "You’re just a kid. What do you know?"
Xue Xingjun stiffened. "Who says...? I’m a grown-up now. I know everything. When a woman is angry, you have to coax her. As long as you didn’t cross any major lines, my sister will forgive you if you just try to appease her."
He Lang asked him, "And what is a ’major line’?"
Xue Xingjun said bluntly, "Other women. Fooling around with other women and upsetting my sister—that’s crossing a major line. That’s unforgivable."
He Lang sighed in frustration. It was indeed about another woman, but he felt completely wronged. There was no one else but Xue Yue in his heart—in fact, he didn’t even have eyes for anyone else.
A moment later, He Lang looked up and was met with Xue Xingjun’s furious expression. His fists were clenched tightly as he glared at He Lang.
He Lang studied him. "What’s this all about?"
Xue Xingjun rebuked him angrily, "The moment I mention other women, you go quiet. That proves you’re guilty! Hmph. I was wondering why my sister, who’s so good-natured, would fight with you. It turns out you have another woman on the side! He Lang, let me tell you, don’t think the Xue family has no one to back her up. If you bully my sister, I’ll beat you up, believe it or not!"
He Lang leaned back in his chair, his gaze heavy, and just watched him.
After locking eyes with He Lang for a few moments, Xue Xingjun’s bravado failed him. He stammered, "I... I mean it."
He Lang sneered. "Come on. Come over here and try."
Xue Xingjun’s eyes flickered, his fists trembling slightly. He hesitated for a long time before finally unclenching his fists and letting his shoulders slump.
"I admit I can’t beat you, but since you’re bullying my sister, I quit."
With that, he turned to leave.
But He Lang called him back. "Go buy me some breakfast first."
"Oh."
Xue Xingjun replied instinctively.
It wasn’t until he was out the door that he processed what had happened. ’He’s treating my sister like this, and he still has the nerve to ask me to buy him food!’
"I’m not going! Serves you right to starve."
He took a few steps, then stopped, stomped his foot, and said, "Fine. This is the last time."
About ten minutes later, Xue Xingjun brought breakfast in for He Lang, slammed it on the desk, and left again.
His movements were fluid, and he didn’t say a single word, making his attitude clear.
He Lang didn’t even look at him, just thought to himself: ’This kid is asking for a beating.’
After eating breakfast, He Lang went over to the hotel.
Xue Xingjun hadn’t actually left. Instead, he was sitting in Daya’s office, complaining about He Lang to her.
"We were all wrong about him. Hmph. I used to think he was a good guy. I’m done with him."
Daya said doubtfully, "That can’t be right. My uncle isn’t that kind of person. Are you sure you didn’t misunderstand something?"
Xue Xingjun was taken aback. "How could I? He already admitted he fought with my sister."
Daya replied, "But that doesn’t mean it was about another woman."
"But he went silent! Not saying anything is the same as admitting it."
"Who says? Can you please not jump to conclusions? My uncle and aunt have a great relationship. Besides, what would my uncle even like about someone else? Is anyone else as beautiful as my aunt? Don’t they say men are visual creatures? The best is right in front of him."
Xue Xingjun was a little confused. "What kind of creatures are men? We’re not mules. How are we animals?"
Daya’s face darkened, and she rolled her eyes at him.
"I’m begging you, please read a book once in a while."
Xue Xingjun was puzzled. "What does that have to do with reading? Do books say what kind of animals men are?"
Daya pointed to the door. "Out. Don’t bother me in here. If I miscalculate the accounts, it’ll be your fault."
Xue Xingjun muttered, "Women are so much trouble," and left.
Once Xue Xingjun was gone, Daya lost her motivation to work.
’Did Uncle and Aunt really have a fight?’
In her memory, her uncle and aunt had never even gotten red-faced with anger. They never spoke a harsh word to each other. Daya was very envious of their relationship.
But Xue Xingjun had sounded so convincing. Remembering that her uncle hadn’t gone home last night and had slept at the office instead, Daya started to feel uneasy too.
When she finally got off work, Daya didn’t see Xue Xingjun. But seeing that her uncle’s office door was locked, she quickly headed home as well.
Xue Yue wasn’t back yet, but Ruanruan and Shiyi had already been picked up and brought home.
Seeing that Xue Yue hadn’t returned, Daya went to the kitchen to start making dinner.
Meanwhile, Xue Yue was still in a meeting at work. The textile factory had signed a contract with Country Y, but their first shipment had been rejected because the quality grade was substandard.
That meant the contract was now void. Jin Shaoming was anxious, too. Everything had been going smoothly, but who could have expected this mess?
Their only option now was to find a way to remedy the situation, which meant producing a new batch of cotton cloth that met the required grade within the stipulated time frame—and that was only if the other party agreed.
By the time the meeting ended, it was already past seven o’clock, and the sky had grown dark.
In the northern winters, night fell very early. Fortunately, there was still one last bus.
Just as Xue Yue reached the entrance to her alley, she saw someone standing there, holding a flashlight. At the sound of her approach, the beam of light swung toward her.
