Chapter 2643: There is no turning back once the bow is drawn

At this moment, Wu Shutong almost immediately made up his mind: he absolutely must not report the actual situation here to the Lord!

At the very least, he could not tell the Lord that the warhead and casing of a close-in weapon system (CIWS) had been discovered here.

Even more so, he could not let the Lord know that the CIWS warhead also carried a person's DNA, and that person was very likely the Jian Gong Bo, Ou Bojun.

Because a CIWS is far too sensitive a subject, and the discovery of shell casings within the copper mine's perimeter was enough to prove to the Lord that this dead soldier station had long been secretly controlled by the enemy under his own jurisdiction. In that case, his dereliction of duty would be far too severe.

Coincidentally, the Cyprus authorities currently also intended to conceal the news of the CIWS and planned to fill in the entire collapsed area, which meant that everything that happened here would soon be left without any evidence.

As long as he didn't speak, he assumed the Lord couldn't possibly know of the CIWS's existence.

In that case, regarding what exactly happened here, he could play dumb, directly state that no valuable clues could be investigated, and ultimately package this matter as an unsolved mystery, then push the blame onto that mysterious enemy.

In this way, even if the Lord punished him, it wouldn't be too severe.

After all, even the Lord herself couldn't find any leads on the enemy hiding in the shadows, not to mention there were already two precedents in New York and Northern Europe.

Thinking of this, Wu Shutong finally breathed a sigh of relief.

He felt that although the commotion this time was bigger than those in New York and Northern Europe, at worst he would just lose his position as the Governor of the Right Military Governor's Office; at the very least, he could still keep his dog life.

……

Soon, the heavy machinery that had been continuously excavating debris and drilling stopped all at once.

Immediately after, they began to withdraw from the collapsed area one after another.

According to the instructions from their superiors, the excavation and drilling work was now completely finished.

Seeing this, Wu Shutong felt much more at ease, so he immediately signaled the others to withdraw immediately as well.

After the group met up outside the copper mine, Wu Shutong deliberately asked the others: "Did you find any clues?"

The others all shook their heads with terrified expressions.

Among them, Wu Shutong's younger brother, Wu Shuhang, spoke up: "Governor, I just went inside the collapsed area to take a look. The entire copper mine has turned into ruins, and the drop between the center and the surrounding flat ground is at least ten meters. It's impossible to investigate! If we want to check what happened inside, it's impossible without heavy equipment."

Another person said: "But they have already started moving the excavation tools out. I guess they don't intend to investigate any further."

Wu Shutong said: "I just heard their commander say that they have orders from above to fill this place in completely within 72 hours."

Wu Shuhang said helplessly: "In this situation, without heavy machinery, it's impossible to find any clues. Now that they aren't investigating, we can't possibly mobilize equipment to continue the investigation. Once they fill this place in, it will be even more impossible for us to find any clues..."

"No choice." Wu Shutong sighed with feigned melancholy and said: "They will soon withdraw all personnel from the collapsed area. By then, we won't be able to sneak in under their noses to find clues either. And it won't be long before they start backfilling. There's no need for us to stay here any longer. We might as well withdraw first and report back to the Lord to see what instructions the old lady has."

"Good!" The others knew there was no better way at the moment, so they all agreed.

Afterwards, the group returned to where they had parked earlier.

Wu Shutong said to the others: "You guys go further away; I need to go into the car to report to the Lord."

The others nodded simultaneously and walked a long way in the opposite direction.

Only then did Wu Shutong sit in the car, take out his mobile phone, and use a specialized communication app to make a voice call to the Lord.

Once the call connected, the Lord asked him: "Has the situation been clarified?"

Wu Shutong hurriedly said: "Reporting to the Lord, your subordinate has already entered the location of the copper mine to investigate. It's just that the entire copper mine has collapsed from the bottom, and even the surface part of the copper mine has completely collapsed into ruins. The entire scene is full of collapsed construction waste; no clues can be found anymore..."

The Lord sternly questioned: "How could this happen?! A large base, just gone like that?! What about the people inside?! Were they all killed?!"

Wu Shutong said in a panic: "Reporting to the Lord, your subordinate knows nothing about the situation of the people inside! I originally hoped for the Cyprus authorities' investigation, but they have now ordered the entire site to be filled in, claiming to the public that the copper mine has reached the end of its service life and was abandoned. Now that this place is heavily guarded, your subordinate is powerless to investigate!"

The Lord asked coldly: "Why are the Cyprus authorities in such a hurry to fill that place in?! To cover up evidence so hastily, could it be that they discovered some hidden information that cannot be known to the public?!"

Wu Shutong's heart tightened. He didn't expect the Lord to grasp the key point of the problem in an instant.

However, there is no turning back once the bow is drawn.

He dared not take responsibility for the fact that the entire dead soldier station had long been occupied by others, and that Ou Bojun had also been killed. He only wanted the Lord to know that the reason this place was razed to the ground was entirely because the mysterious enemy was too powerful, just like the failures in New York and Northern Europe—it wasn't that their side was too weak, but that the enemy was too strong.

Therefore, he could only bite the bullet and say: "Lord, your subordinate feels that the people at the dead soldier station, as well as Jian Gong Bo, have very likely all died. It is highly probable that the enemy took advantage of their lack of preparation and bloodied this place..."

"Bloodied..." the Lord murmured: "Jian Gong Bo's strength is extremely high; who could blood him?!"

Wu Shutong sighed mournfully: "Lord, your subordinate does not know who did this either. I ask the Lord to punish me!"

After a long while, the Lord said dejectedly: "Forget it. It seems this world is not what I thought it was. I was too optimistic..."

After saying this, the Lord added: "Alright, you all withdraw. Do not mention this matter to anyone. Those who violate this will be killed without mercy!"

Hearing this, Wu Shutong finally felt completely at ease.

As the Governor of the Right Military Governor's Office, he was one of the Lord's most trusted confidants, and he knew the underlying logic of the Po Qing Hui's internal operations.

In the Po Qing Hui, the five major Governor's Offices operated independently of each other. No one knew the specific situation of the other four Governor's Offices—they didn't know where they were, how many people they had under their command, how many dead soldier stations they had, or how many Dark Realm or even Transformation Realm experts they possessed.

Moreover, there were strict information firewalls within each Governor's Office.

Take the Cyprus dead soldier station as an example: its daily operation was entirely the responsibility of the station's Commissioner, Ni Zhenyu. Moreover, Ni Zhenyu only took orders from Wu Shutong. Although the copper refinery in Turkey was his superior and was responsible for all supplies and antidote distribution for the dead soldier station, they had no authority to command Ni Zhenyu.

If the Turkish copper refinery and the Cyprus copper mine disappeared at the same time, this line would naturally be unknown to anyone.

The Lord letting him conceal this matter was for no other purpose than to stabilize morale and keep others completely ignorant of that mysterious enemy.

And looking at it from another angle, since the Lord had said so, she probably didn't intend to pursue his responsibility any further.

Wu Shutong was extremely excited. After ending the call with the Lord, he used his phone to call the others back.

After the group returned, Wu Shutong's younger brother, Wu Shuhang, saw his brother sitting in the passenger seat and went straight into the driver's seat. However, he didn't rush to start the car, but instead asked him nervously: "Brother, what did the Lord say?"

Wu Shutong frowned and scolded in a low voice: "I've told you many times, you can only call me brother in private; at other times, you should call me Governor!"

Wu Shuhang hurriedly said: "Yes... Governor... your subordinate was just worried about you... afraid that the Lord would punish you..."

Wu Shutong smiled slightly and said: "Something like this happening is far beyond my capabilities. Even Jian Gong Bo couldn't escape the enemy's clutches, so what virtue or ability do I have?"

After saying this, Wu Shutong waved his hand: "Let's go back; it's about time."

Wu Shuhang nodded, handed Wu Shutong a bottle of water, and said: "Governor, drink some water to calm your nerves. We'll head back now."

Wu Shutong was currently extremely relaxed because of a sense of surviving a disaster. After relaxing, he did indeed feel thirsty, so he took the water, unscrewed it, and drank a few mouthfuls.

A few seconds later, his expression suddenly changed drastically. He stared fixedly at his younger brother, Wu Shuhang, who was sitting in the driver's seat, and blurted out with difficulty: "Shuhang, you... you... you poisoned the water?!" ===== CHAPTER 2644 =====
