taking far longer than usual.

Initially, Elrick and the others had kept quiet, watching and waiting with mild impatience.

Yet as more hours dragged by, deep frowns creased their brows, revealing their growing annoyance.

Even though the oppressive radiation no longer plagued them, they still did not wish to remain in the tomb a moment longer than necessary.

The truth was that Cain found the delay frustrating as well.

He felt trapped, waiting for a signal that stubbornly refused to arrive.

As time passed, Cain’s mind spun with possibilities, most of them unpleasant, and one of them became more and more feasible.

“Could they have perished?” Cain wondered.

The irony that the Night Prince’s elite subordinates might have died in the same dangerous corridors where they intended to ambush unsuspecting rivals was not lost on him.

However, it was not unlike something that could have happened.

The tomb’s hazards were not to be taken lightly, and even high-level cultivators could easily meet their end if they weren’t fully prepared.

Just as the unsettling thought took shape, Cain felt a faint flicker in the secret communication gem stored in his space ring.

Relief washed over him-at long last, the Night Prince’s people had made it to the tomb’s core.

Immediately, Cain signaled back with a simple blink of energy.

He dared not send a longer message for fear that Elrick and the others might detect it and suspect his plans.

Now that his patience had paid off, Cain no longer needed to maintain the ruse of a slow recovery.

In under fifteen minutes, he accelerated his healing, allowing the visible gashes and bruises to knit themselves together until only shallow cuts remained.

Gradually, he stood up, eyes gleaming with sharp resolve.

“Let’s move,” he declared flatly.

Elrick snorted, crossing his arms over his chest.

The haughty scorn in his gaze underscored his contempt for Cain’s supposed frailty.

Still, despite all the time lost, Elrick did not object.

If anything, he seemed eager to proceed.

He merely let Cain take the lead, albeit with a sneer that conveyed his lingering hostility.

Meanwhile, Cain suppressed an internal sigh at the hypocrisy and arrogance Elrick displayed.

Yes, Elrick’s cultivation rank was high, and he possessed substantial battle power, but his pride and vanity had proven to be significant flaws he could not control.

Regardless, Cain saw no point in arguing with someone who might soon perish.

With everyone in tow, he started down the next corridor.

The passage they traversed was cylindrical, its walls made of smooth obsidian.

In spite of his constant vigilance-keeping his guard fully raised and scanning for traps-Cain found no hidden dangers.

No illusions, no barrier spells, no shifting floors or attacking beasts.

“Perhaps upon reaching this depth, the Sky Sovereign Tomb decided there was no further need to test us,” Cain mused.

He found the notion plausible.

Far from letting his alertness drop, though, he merely kept an open mind.

Walking at a brisk pace, he glanced over his shoulder, eyes settling on Elrick.

“It seems there were no more challenges,” Cain remarked with a detached tone.

“You could have advanced without my help, after all.” Though his words carried a simple observation, the mocking undertone was unmistakable-an implication that all the waiting they’d done while he “recovered” might have been pointless.

Elrick’s face darkened with anger.

His teeth ground together in silent fury, and his clenched fists shook at his sides.

The flames of resentment within him grew hotter by the second.

One would have to be blind not to see that he toyed with the idea of attacking Cain then and there.

Yet he could not rationalize doing so when there was still more of the tomb to explore.

Cain’s choice to needle Elrick this way might seem risky, but he had a motive: anger could lead people to make mistakes, and he wanted Elrick’s mind less focused on caution and planning.

A single slip would be all Cain needed when the conflict broke out.

They continued on in strained silence for nearly forty-five minutes until the corridor opened into a massive obsidian gateway.

The single word “Tomb” was carved in stylized script across the top.

The group immediately tensed, realizing that beyond this gate lay what was likely the final resting place of the Sky Sovereign.

Cain stopped and closed his eyes for an instant, sending another subtle signal through his communication gem.

An answer pulsed back at once, indicating that the Night Prince’s team was also in position, ready to move in on their side.

“There’s no need for further delay,” Cain announced calmly, pivoting back to face Elrick, Auron, Mera, and the Deus Behemoth Brothers.

“Everyone’s ready, so let’s take what we came here for.” The others exchanged guarded nods.

Even Elrick, though still brimming with irritation, stepped forward.

Cain placed one hand against the gate’s surface.

At his slightest touch, an overwhelming gravitational force snared them, making it nearly impossible to withdraw.

The gate rumbled open, and the force pushed them all inside.

Cain and the rest of the group were hurled into a colossal obsidian chamber shaped like a dome.

As soon as they staggered to their feet, breathless from the sudden shift, the gate slammed shut behind them with a thunderous echo.

They might have been trapped, but their minds could not focus on that now.

Their attention was drawn to a more arresting sight: a corpse sat on a raised dais in the center of the dome.

The body was that of a man.

All fluids had dried up long ago, leaving behind a mummified husk of desiccated skin stretched taut over bone.

Despite that, an overwhelming aura of energy and vitality clung to his cells as though some remnant of his immense power refused to fully dissipate.

The leathery skin and distinctly pointed ears made it clear that the corpse belonged to the Atrox Race.

In the stunned silence, two words resonated through everyone’s thoughts.

“Sky Sovereign.” CREATORS’ THOUGHTS Redsunworld Special shoutout to Jayscribe.

Check out his work: The Stonehearted
