Chapter 114: I Think You

~6 min read 1,167 words

Zheng Xinyu was amused by the corgi’s expression, shaking her backpack: “You don’t believe me? Really, smell this backpack—does it smell like me? I’ve been carrying you all this way, you ungrateful little dog!”

To her surprise, the corgi actually ran up to Zheng Xinyu, sniffing the backpack intently with its tiny nose, then circled her twice before amiably rubbing its head against her pant leg.

“Wow, little dog, you’re so smart! Hey, don’t go—”

Zheng Xinyu was overjoyed by the dog’s affectionate behavior, about to crouch down and pet its head, when the corgi darted off again, returning to Zhang Su’s side, sitting upright and wagging its tail with its tongue lolling out, like a loyal mascot guarding Zhang Su.

“You… he’s bad, he wants to eat you, I’m the good one—how can you not tell right from wrong…?”

Zheng Xinyu was thoroughly frustrated.

Zhang Su looked at the corgi sitting beside him and suddenly found it wasn’t so annoying after all; he grinned at Zheng Xinyu: “My charm is just that powerful—you can’t deny it. Even the dog ignores you, hahaha!”

“Bullshit! Come here, doggy, sister’s gonna spoil you…”

Zheng Xinyu stepped forward and stroked the corgi’s head; this time, the corgi offered no resistance, letting her rub it all over.

“Let’s go, they’re already inside—hurry up!”

Zhang Su turned and saw Zhong Xiaoshanyi standing beside a metal door, waving at him; the others had already entered the shop.

“Come here, sister’s got you.”

Zheng Xinyu opened her arms to pick up the corgi.

Zhang Su sneered: “What sister, what little girl—what’s the point of hugging it? How are you gonna work if you’re carrying it around? Are you crazy?”

“Oh… right…” Zheng Xinyu finally realized she couldn’t afford to hold the dog; she pulled out the baseball bat tucked behind her back.

“Wang.”

The corgi, as if fully understanding their conversation, dashed back and forth on the ground several times—as if to say, I can run myself, no need to carry me!

“Xinyu, this thing’s speed is weird!”

As Zhang Su walked, he frowned at the corgi frolicking everywhere; he’d never owned a dog, nor seen one sprinting at full speed in his neighborhood, but he knew his own speed—and he was sure he could outpace this corgi!

Yet the corgi’s speed was utterly unbelievable; without even comparing, Zhang Su knew he had no chance—he was far too slow!

A normal corgi’s top speed is about ten seconds per hundred meters, with minor individual variation; only a tiny fraction of humans can barely outpace them.

Now, the corgi darted around the courtyard, its yellow-and-white form zipping between vehicles, swift and agile—impossible to measure precisely, but even the naked eye could tell it was extraordinary!

Seven or eight cars were parked side by side, roughly thirty meters apart; suddenly, the corgi’s paws screeched against the ground, and in about one second, it had sprinted from one end to the other—three times faster than a normal corgi!

This speed was approaching that of the fastest cheetahs!

Zheng Xinyu stared for a moment, lips pursed, nodding silently—she was too stunned to speak.

“Hey, dumb dog!”

Zhang Su called out to the corgi.

The corgi skidded to a halt far away, turning its head back to look at them.

Zhang Su felt the corgi clearly disliked the name “dumb dog”—being stared at by it felt like someone giving him a cold, disapproving glance; the sensation was strange.

“Hey, pup, did you mutate?”

The corgi didn’t bark in reply; instead, it jumped up and nodded.

“Holy shit, Su-ge, it’s turned into a super dog!”

Zheng Xinyu excitedly grabbed Zhang Su’s arm.

No normal corgi could leap nearly a person’s height from a standing start—even small cats struggle with that, let alone this corgi, weighing over twenty pounds, which confirmed the mutation theory beyond doubt.

This phenomenon wasn’t hard for the two to accept; after all, zombies were running wild in the streets—what was so strange about a mutated dog?

“Let’s go, we’ve got work to do—then we’ll figure out its problem later!”

Zhang Su didn’t head for the shop’s back door; instead, he walked over to the Mercedes motorhome—twelve meters long, two and a half meters wide, four meters tall—far more imposing than a regular minibus; even a Toyota Coaster was only seven meters long. At twelve meters, this was nearly the size of a large bus, utterly majestic.

“This car… is awesome.”

Zhang Su ran his hand over the Mercedes motorhome’s tire, smiling unconsciously.

“But Su-ge, I heard bigger cars use more fuel—won’t this thing guzzle fuel like a tank?”

Zheng Xinyu tapped the vehicle’s body; the solid metal clanged loudly.

“Tank… you dare say that? Do you know a tank’s fuel consumption? Germany’s Tiger tank in WWII used about four hundred liters per hundred kilometers, and six hundred sixty liters off-road!”

“Six hundred sixty!”

Zheng Xinyu was stunned; if she’d seen those numbers on paper, she’d have suspected there should’ve been a decimal point after the two sixes…

“Did you get that wrong?”

Zhang Su shook his head: “I’m not a military buff. I got that data from a foreign automotive variety show’s test. It’s accurate! This motorhome does consume more fuel than regular cars, but proportionally to its weight—about twenty liters empty. For something this big, that’s actually pretty efficient.”

“Fill this thing with supplies, drive it to the beach, the grasslands, the desert—anywhere, as long as no one ambushes you—and you could live comfortably for a year or more. Just imagine that life—it’d be so nice.”

Zhang Su couldn’t help fantasizing: right now, the streets were littered with abandoned cars and empty gas stations. Driving a tank was out of the question, but this motorhome’s fuel consumption was still manageable.

“This car is really majestic, Su-ge—how much would it have cost before? Could you even afford it?”

Zheng Xinyu didn’t know cars, but this massive vehicle gave her a strong sense of security—she assumed it must’ve been expensive.

Zhang Su gave her a deadpan look: “I’m barely middle-class. If I remember right, this model cost over fifteen million after import—do you think that’s something a middle-class person buys?”

“Fifteen million isn’t that much…”

Zheng Xinyu looked puzzled.

“Fine, fine, you’re awesome, fifteen million isn’t much—you’re incredible.”

Zhang Su had no reply; he silently thought this girl must’ve watched too many short videos and assumed everyone in China earned hundreds of millions.

“Oh, I messed up—I thought you meant dou coins, hehe…”

Zheng Xinyu stuck out her tongue apologetically; she’d confused the units—tenfold difference.

“Dou coins… I think you’re a dumbass! Go play somewhere else…” Zhang Su shook his head, tugged the door handle, shrugged: “Can’t open it. Let’s find the keys!”

The cars parked in the lot were locked tight; the two headed toward the back door.

The little corgi knew where they were going—it had already run ahead and sat calmly beside the metal door, watching them with sharp, alert eyes.
