Chapter 625: The Amazing Zombie Is Here!

~7 min read 1,327 words

"Fuck, what the hell is going on!?"

Zhang Su stared at the dead woman with an exaggerated expression, his brows knotted into a tight knot.

"What's wrong?"

Zheng Xinyu ran over, carrying a pile of bags, and asked beside Zhang Su.

"Took the medicine, didn't save her—she's dead!"

Zhang Su strode forward, checked her breath, pressed her carotid artery—no movement, confirmed dead.

"Ah, this… how could this happen? Is it possible that when injuries reach a certain level, even divine medicine can't save them?"

Zheng Xinyu made a weird face, her expression uneasy—this news was a headache.

"What, Brother Su, fake medicine?"

"Impossible! All of it came from Dr. Fu, guaranteed active… how could it be fake!"

"Poor thing—probably all her internal organs shattered, circulation completely destroyed, the medicine couldn't even dissolve…"

Others gradually gathered around Zhang Su; after learning the situation, they all sighed in dismay.

"Stop guessing. Bring me a few clothes—I'm taking the corpse back for professionals to study."

Zhang Su waved to his companions. There were too many possible reasons for the failure—better to figure it out clearly.

"Aowu, aowoo…"

But at that moment, Zhang Su suddenly froze—he heard the sound of a zombie. He looked down: the woman's neck, just dead moments ago, stiffly twitched.

"Holy shit, fast zombification!"

Lu Yu bo gasped—he'd watched his own brother turn, and that memory haunted him forever. He reacted violently, instinctively drawing his food sampler.

All other slain dragon-head deserters had been stabbed in the head—only this newly dead woman hadn't. Who could've guessed that within minutes, right under everyone's eyes, she turned?

The female zombie showed no enhancement—she was in initial state, far weaker than current zombies. She struggled to rise from the ground but already knew how to use her arms to grip the railing.

Zhang Su stared at the female zombie, his mind full of questions.

"Do we still need to take her back?"

Zheng Xinyu held a coil of rope, asking awkwardly.

"Of course we take her. Bring her back for study—if she's useless, we can burn her as fuel."

Saying this, Zhang Su drew his dog-leg knife from its sheath—but just as he raised it to strike, a shocking scene unfolded.

"Aowu, aowoo…"

The female zombie leaned against the iron mesh, raised one arm in a defensive posture—her movements stiff, yet strangely magical.

"Holy shit!"

"Whoosh!"

Almost everyone leaped backward. Someone nearly twisted their ankle on the tracks—this violation of reality terrified them all. Even Zhang Su and Ju Wuying stepped back two paces, defensive, eyes wide with shock.

The scene fell silent. Everyone held their breath, sweat that had just dried now prickled again down their spines, cold shivers crawling over their skin. Dozens of wide, round eyes locked onto the slow-moving female zombie.

Faced with the clearly abnormal zombie, the situation froze…

"Someone tell me what the hell is happening!"

Zhang Su shouted. A zombie raising its arm to defend? Anyone would be unsettled.

The Nether Legion had no one to answer Zhang Su—but the female zombie could…

"Aowu, aow…"

The female zombie struggled to stand upright, swayed, mechanically rotated her joints, painfully lifted her head. Her gray-blue eyes peered through tangled hair at Zhang Su. Her arm bent stiffly, then her fingers pointed at herself, then at the group ahead, then gave a jerky, mechanical wave—like a rusted wind-up toy's final farewell performance.

"She… what the hell is she trying to say? Jesus, this is haunted! I told you I felt creepy vibes earlier—so terrifying!"

Wu Lue's face was grim, half his body hidden behind Zhao Xue, utterly lacking any manly courage.

"I think she's saying… she won't hurt us?" Zheng Xinyu tentatively interpreted.

The unconventional Zhou Hao had a different take: "No, no—maybe she's saying, 'Feed me all of you'?"

????

Everyone exchanged glances. Was this zombie that hungry? "Aowoo!"

The female zombie shook her head with uncanny expressiveness—her mechanical motion made it look like her head might fly off—then repeated the earlier gesture, this time shaking her head and waving both arms.

"Zhou, you're full of shit! She's saying she won't hurt us! Right?"

Zheng Xinyu, seeing the zombie seemed to understand speech, asked her directly.

"Aow!"

The female zombie nodded hard, her neck bending at an unnatural angle. It took a long while before she lifted her head again.

"Fuck, this is surreal—a zombie says she won't hurt us…"

"I'm just a temp—do I really have to deal with this? I'm inexperienced, don't bully me…"

"The world is truly full of wonders!"

Everyone marveled—this zombie actually possessed consciousness. It was miraculous.

A few in the crowd accepted this easily: Zhang Su, Liu Tianji, and Ke Zhiyu. Liu Tianji and Qiu Hui's cases were right before them—if humans could shift between human and zombie states without triggering zombie aggression, then zombies possessing consciousness was theoretically plausible. One other person had been startled at first but quickly accepted it: Chen Hanzhou. He could inexplicably summon energy to enhance himself at will. Others might have strange encounters too—but was this even an encounter? Hard to say…

Zhang Su took a deep breath, placed one hand on his hip, frowned: "Open your mouth."

"Ah."

The female zombie tilted her head and opened her bloody maw obediently—her gums had changed; two rows of sharp, needle-like teeth gleamed, perfect for tearing flesh.

"You say you won't hurt us—don't you want to eat human flesh and drink human blood?"

Zhang Su asked curiously. He suddenly realized he could use this interaction to better understand zombies.

Upon hearing Zhang Su's words, the female zombie's gray-blue eyes flickered slightly, then she staggered sideways and walked away.

"Why is she moving so slow? Like the weakest zombie in Plants vs. Zombies. I remember early zombies weren't this sluggish."

"Yeah, why… wait, haven't you noticed? She's slow, but her movements aren't like a zombie's! I get it—her body turned zombie, but her mind didn't. Her thoughts are still human, just struggling to control this broken shell. That's why she's clumsy."

"Hey, you're right—so what's she doing? Holy shit, sis, you're not serious…"

Wang Xin and Pan Guoliang were chatting when they saw the female zombie pick up a chunk of corpse flung onto the wire mesh, turn to Zhang Su, gesture, then lower her head and begin gnawing—calm, content.

The flesh had long cooled and frozen, but before the zombie's sharp double rows of teeth, it meant nothing. Crunch, crunch—ice-cracking sounds mixed with wet, tearing flesh. In moments, half a thigh vanished into her stomach.

For the entire several minutes of eating, the Nether Legion remained silent. The zombie didn't attack the living—she performed an elegant meal. This spectacle was incredible! "Aowu…"

After finishing, the female zombie raised her arm and wiped her mouth, then tossed the bloody bone fragments with tendons and meat scraps under the railway bridge, and looked at Zhang Su.

"I've seen everything now!"

Zhang Su took off his sunglasses, pinched his nose bridge, then put them back on. He extended a finger: "Do you consider yourself human or zombie? If you can control your actions, show one. If you can't, show two!"

Under everyone's curious gaze, the female zombie raised one withered finger. Her gray-blue skin still retained elasticity—not dry at all.

"Hmm…"

Zhang Su stared at the female zombie several meters away, torn over what to do. Excluding safety concerns, she absolutely should be taken back—studying her behavior alone held enormous value. But how could he ignore safety? "Are you…"

"Hey, Brother Zhang, Liu Yao and the others have reached under the railway bridge!"

At that moment, Jia Shiqin's voice crackled over the radio. He'd been bored guarding the flame zombie when he spotted several vehicles approaching—startled, he raised his gun, then relaxed upon recognizing them.

"Tell him to wait a moment—we'll be back in fifteen minutes!"

Zhang Su replied to Jia Shiqin, then turned to those around him: "Hurry up, move the gear over—quick, quick…"
