Chapter 295: Hiding People in the Tank
The group walked to the so-called command post. The name sounded imposing, but it was actually just a dilapidated two-story building. On the ground all around lay no fewer than fifty zombie corpses, mixed with human remains. The walls were riddled with bullet holes, and blood splattered everywhere, staining the white walls red. The most striking feature was a small section that had already collapsed.
There were no signs of shelling, yet a portion of the small building had fallen into ruins!
"That's right, there must be a laboratory under this building, and it's quite important!"
Zhang Su stood before the ruined building with a grave expression. Pointing to the collapsed section, he said, "If I'm not mistaken, the only thing capable of tearing a house apart like this is 004!"
"004? Holy crap, is that the big grasshopper from the other day?"
Zhao Dezhu's face showed astonishment. He still had a vivid memory of that figure wreaking havoc among the horde.
Many people from Lishan had seen 004 through their binoculars and had some understanding of its abilities. Seeing the collapsed building, they couldn't help but gasp.
"I didn't expect the Edge Squad to actually modify 004. That's terrifying."
Xin Qi walked up and patted the collapsed wall, as if sensing 004's power.
Zhang Su looked around and said with relief, "It's a good thing 004 was burned to death in that battle; otherwise, it would have been an absolute disaster."
003 had superior combat power, but it probably wouldn't have lasted more than three or five rounds against 004. However, 003's greatest advantage was that it was controllable—controllable compared to 004!
No matter how powerful a weapon is, if it cannot be controlled and fails to distinguish between friend and foe, it is merely a deterrent and very difficult to truly put into use.
Zhang Su rubbed his head. There was definitely a laboratory below. Even if there were no people hiding there, he really wanted to take the remaining items. But he couldn't ignore the danger before him; they were all flesh and blood, and no one could withstand being crushed by reinforced concrete.
Zhang Su wanted to walk inside and tried hard to pry open the twisted iron door, but he heard the wall emit a squeezing sound, giving a sense of imminent collapse.
"Why not just open it and see!"
"I only saw the tank fire less than five shells that night. Could it be that the camp's ammunition reserves were insufficient?"
Two Type 99 tanks lay quietly in the pile of corpses a hundred meters apart, like beasts crouching after a bloody battle.
"Damn it, this building... I'm afraid it's not safe!"
No one knew how to drive a tank, but everyone highly approved of Zhang Su's idea. In the face of these steel beasts, such a ruined building was nothing to worry about.
Seeing that the tank, aside from being a bit dirty and covered in gore, had no obvious damage, Zhao Dezhu jumped with excitement.
"Uh... 004 rushed out from inside here, so there probably isn't anyone left below. How about we don't go? It's too dangerous!"
"Type 99 main battle tank, weighs fifty tons, three crew members, maximum road speed of eighty kilometers per hour, maximum off-road speed of sixty kilometers per hour, operational range of six hundred kilometers, main gun is a 125mm smoothbore, ammunition limit of forty rounds, equipped with a coaxial machine gun..."
Zheng Xin suggested, frowning slightly.
Zhao Dezhu picked up a corpse from the ground, threw it aside, walked to the tank, and reached out to touch the cold tracks, feeling very puzzled.
Soon, the group walked to the west wall of the barracks, the main battlefield where the horde had attacked the city. The tragic scene made many people's expressions heavy.
Zombies burned by fire left no remains, but many unburned zombie corpses lay by the wall. There were even human corpses that had been scorched; because the temperature wasn't high enough, the human bodies couldn't be completely incinerated. This was even worse; the gruesome sight was even more hellish than hell itself...
"Haha, good stuff!"
Zhang Su reeled off a string of data like he was counting his own family treasures, introducing the big guy in front of him in detail.
After thinking it over, a sudden flash of inspiration hit him: "Let's go, let's find the tanks first. Damn it, we can just use the tanks to flatten the building completely, then it'll be easy to handle!"
"Let's go."
Zhang Su called out to the group, who were standing there in a daze, and walked toward the tanks on the side.
With that, Zhang Su prepared to jump onto the tank; among the people present, he was the only one with some theoretical knowledge.
However, just as he climbed onto the driver's hatch and prepared to pull it open, a *dang-dang* knocking sound suddenly reached his ears—very close, right under his feet!
"Get back, there are living people in the tank!"
Zhang Su was startled and shouted quickly.
Everyone at the scene was terrified and scrambled to both sides. If this thing suddenly started up, let alone firing a shell, just running them over would be enough to scare the crap out of them!
While Zhang Su shouted for his companions to clear the tank's path, he pulled open the hatch above the driver's compartment and looked inside with his gun raised—it was empty...
*Dang-dang. *
The sound came from inside the cabin again.
This time Zhang Su heard it clearly; the sound was coming from the gunner's compartment. He leaped up and jumped directly to the very top of the tank.
*Bang-bang. *
This time Zhang Su didn't rush to pull open the hatch, but instead pounded hard on the hatch cover.
Soon, a response came from inside, two *dang-dang* sounds, and at the same time, a muffled voice spoke: "Help, save me, it's unlocked, just pull..."
Zhang Su frowned and carefully pulled open the hatch, while keeping his body behind it to prevent an attack.
With a *whoosh*, the hatch opened. No physical attack occurred, but a stench of urine mixed with the smell of blood gushed out. This chemical attack was not to be underestimated. In the cold air, he wasn't sensitive to smells, but suddenly catching that pungent odor made Zhang Su's nose sting.
"Who is it? Which squad are you brothers from? I'm Pan Guoliang, can you save me?" The man inside the tank didn't know that the stench had almost knocked the people outside over, and he was still trying hard to call for help.
"Throw your weapon out first!"
Zhang Su didn't rush to rescue him; he didn't know what the situation was inside.
"Ah? Brother, who are you? I haven't heard your voice before. Damn it, I'm in this state, what's there to be guarded against? Here, take it!"
Pan Guoliang said, panting, while a rifle tremblingly extended from the hatch, its body covered in dried blood.
Zhang Su took the rifle and tossed it to his companions below. He leaned over and looked into the gunner's compartment. In the cramped space lay a middle-aged man whose upper body was soaked in blood. He was looking up at him, responding with an optimistic smile.
"Hero, you look so relaxed, have all the zombies outside run away?"
Seeing a living person again, even though the face was a complete stranger, gave Pan Guoliang a sense of relief at having survived a disaster.
Zhang Su ignored Pan Guoliang and scanned the narrow gunner's compartment. Finding no other abnormalities, he turned to Xin Qi and the others: "You guys come over!"
The three of them ran to the tank.
"The person inside is named Pan Guoliang. Do you know him?"
"Yes, yes, Pan Guoliang is the deputy captain of Elite Squad 2!"
Xin Qi answered immediately.
"Hey, little brother speaking outside, you're Xin Qi from Squad 3, right?"
Pan Guoliang clutched the wound on his abdomen. Perhaps seeing living people gave him hope, or perhaps breathing fresh air after the hatch opened improved his condition; he could speak longer sentences without panting.
"Yes, Captain Pan, I'm Xin Qi. The big brother talking to you is surnamed Zhang, he's a good person!"
Xin Qi hurriedly replied, not forgetting to introduce Zhang Su.
Zhang Su rolled his eyes at Xin Qi's introduction. This was truly a bizarre evaluation.
