Chapter 40: But He Gave Too Much
Blade stood in place, his eyes looking at the check on the table. A thought appeared in his mind: this thing should be his now, right? Tony gave it to Tom, and Tom is just him.
What? Fake identity? What fake identity? Today, I, Blade, am called Tom!
This is one million; he gave too much.
Blade having this thought was something that couldn't be helped. He and Frank were both characters who provided their own dry rations. Usually, repairing equipment and replenishing consumed weapons was enough to spend all their savings.
Stane, seeing Blade's uneasy appearance, didn't know what he had figured out. He picked up the check from the table and came to Blade's side very enthusiastically.
"Young man, I apologize to you on behalf of Tony. He just has that temper. You can rest assured and accept this one million. If there are any problems later, you can come to me."
Stane slapped the check into Blade's hand, then patted Blade's arm, looking like "I think highly of you."
Looking at Stane's departing back, Blade narrowed his eyes slightly. After this set of operations by Stane, an ordinary person would definitely be grateful and moved, but Blade was different.
Although he was as poor as an ordinary person, in front of money, his resistance was relatively much higher.
With Stane selling favor like this, Blade only had one thought: what kind of ability does this fake identity of his have to make the three major leadership layers of Stark Industries Group sell favor like this?
There must be a problem in this, and Blade didn't like Stane. Stane's feeling to Blade was like those hypocritical bats. To put it seriously, Stane and Nick Fury were a bit alike.
"Captain, what should we do next?" Blade turned his head to look at Moerle and asked.
"Your luck has come, you can't block it even if you want to. You'll have to take care of me more in the future." Moerle added a few more points of enthusiasm compared to the beginning. "That, you go back to the dormitory to rest first today. Remember to check your phone; if there are any follow-ups, you will be notified."
After returning to the dormitory and talking to Nick Fury, Blade figured out what the situation was today.
Last night, Tony Stark's motorcade was attacked. Although there were no casualties, the safety of Tony and Pepper was indeed threatened. That was why there was Pepper's idea today to choose a more elite bodyguard for Tony.
Tony's bodyguard needed to have multiple conditions, the most important of which was having sufficiently few connections with other various forces. Even Pepper couldn't find such a person easily. And so, Nick Fury sent over a relatively perfect object.
Tom's strength was guaranteed by the name of the Special Forces and the conflict incident this morning, and Tom himself was kicked out by the army, which could also guarantee to a certain extent that Tom's relationship with the military wouldn't be too good.
Moreover, if Tony went to find friends in the military to check on Tom, he would find that Tom was indeed a real person, and Tom was punished because he violated the order to deal with innocent people during a mission. This persona also fit Tony's wishes.
Nick Fury could be said to have calculated every aspect. Of course, in this series, the only possible accidental event was last night's attack. Anyway, Nick Fury's explanation to Blade was that the attack had nothing to do with him; as for whether it was true or false, that was hard to say.
In addition, the last leadership layer that released goodwill—Stane. This person's motivation was also very easy to explain. In the situation where Blade was very likely to become one of Tony Stark's bodyguards, it was very normal for him to try to win Blade over.
Perhaps he wouldn't end up using Blade, but this kind of winning over originally had no cost. Comparing it with the possible benefits, the cost-effectiveness of this winning-over matter was even higher.
Thinking about these analyses Nick Fury gave him, Blade drew a long red line for Stane in his heart. Doing things for money, this Stane had a very high probability of being the person most likely to threaten Tony Stark during this period.
On the other side, Frank was shuttling rapidly in the alley, climbing over various obstacles, and advancing rapidly toward a place.
Just ten minutes ago, Johnson suddenly made a call to Frank, issuing a request for help, but before he could finish a sentence, the phone was directly disconnected.
Swish~ swish~
Frank's figure flashed rapidly in the air. He was about to reach the place where Johnson's mobile phone signal last appeared.
This was a dark alley. The surrounding high-rise buildings blocked all the sunlight. There were some traces of fighting on the wall at the end of the alley, and a shattered mobile phone was lying in the center of the alley.
Lowering his head to pick up the phone, Frank was very sure this was Johnson's phone. "Professor! I'm here! Where are you?!"
"I'm here!" Johnson's voice came from afar.
Frank hurriedly used a few Relentless Pursuits to rush over. After seeing Johnson, Frank breathed a sigh of relief.
Johnson's appearance now was very disheveled, but there were no obvious wounds on his body, and his mental state didn't have any big problems.
"What happened? Who was the attacker?"
"Don't know." After Frank arrived, Johnson put down the pocket watch in his hand. "I didn't dare to directly divine their identity, but it must be related to the killers Nick Fury asked to investigate. I came out today to search for clues, didn't expect to be discovered."
"Didn't you apply ritual magic? Didn't it take effect?"
"No, the existence-ignoring effect of ritual magic seemed to have been invalidated. The water in here might be very deep." Johnson smiled bitterly. It was precisely because of this that he didn't dare to divine directly. If he attracted the attention of other Sequence holders again, he might not necessarily be able to hold on until Frank arrived. The Diviner's frontal combat power was famously poor among the Sequences.
"Let's go first. By the way, I might have encountered one of your targets today. Call him later and see." The target Frank spoke of was Blade. He asked Nick Fury for Blade's partially viewable file and discovered that the Daywalker's strength in the file was a bit different from what he encountered today.
"Really? That's great!" Johnson became happy. After all, who would risk eating the main material if they could drink the complete magic potion?
After the two walked far away, a shadow squirmed, and Woody's figure emerged from that point.
When Woody received word from his subordinates today that they had discovered someone very similar to the portrait, he rushed over here at the first opportunity. Unfortunately, his speed couldn't compare to Frank's. By the time he arrived nearby, Frank and Johnson had already converged, just less than a minute's difference.
Woody, who had seen the video of the Saint Light Practitioner annihilating the Hand, knew very well that launching an attack directly had a very low success rate. Even if the sneak attack succeeded, Frank could still take Johnson and retreat, so he couldn't do that. In that case, he could only let this Diviner live a little longer.
However, the good news was that he had already grasped the target's foundation; the next opportunity would appear more easily. Even if it didn't appear, Woody could think of ways to create opportunities.
After walking a distance, Johnson looked back toward the direction of the alley. "My spirituality has a warning. When we just walked out of the alley, someone was staring at us with malicious intent."
"I also have this feeling." Frank responded. "See if he dares to chase over. There shouldn't be any traps on the street. If he chases over, you hurry back to the Cabin, and I'll help you touch him head-on, test how deep the water is." ===== CHAPTER 41 =====
