I Want to Run an Experiment

Cheng Shi listened, his face full of shock—and Zhang Zhang Jizu was no different.

He had been so wary of that voice beneath the corpse pit; how could he ever have imagined it was merely a sound coming from a God Seat!

"You're saying you took that God Seat?"

Cheng Shi nodded heavily: "Yes, it's in my personal space right now."

As he spoke, Cheng Shi took out one of the God Seat puzzle pieces—and, as luck would have it, it was the broken, tightly shut Eye of the Stars.

Zhang Zhang Jizu was stunned: "【Fraud】 He......"

"This isn't His corpse, and I don't know where this one belongs either. I took it apart from the God Seat, which is enough to prove the God Seat is in my hands. So why has another God Seat appeared here?"

The two exchanged a glance, and their faces darkened at the same time.

By mortal logic, there was simply no way to make sense of what was before their eyes. To find out the cause, the only method was to go in once more—into that space behind the wall of the corpse pit—and see with their own eyes whether yet another God Seat had appeared there.

Cheng Shi undoubtedly wanted to go, but Zhang Zhang Jizu grabbed him and held him back.

"Wherever something is out of the ordinary, there is danger. You didn't know there was another God Seat here before you came, so this wasn't your purpose.

Finish the 'real business' first, then plan for everything else."

Worthy of Old Zhang, still as steady as ever. Cheng Shi nodded; at this point, he could only choose to be steady too.

Zhang Zhang Jizu was still puzzled. He narrowed his eyes and said: "Since you've already taken the God Seat, why did you come back?"

Cheng Shi pointed at the surrounding corpses of the gods and said in a low, firm voice: "To gather materials."

"These corpses?"

"Yes. I'm preparing to use these corpses to run an experiment to glimpse the future!"

"?"

Zhang Zhang Jizu was dumbfounded. In his understanding, there seemed to be no experiment that required the gods themselves as material—or rather, in the long history of the Tower of Reason, there could never have been an experiment that used the corpses of gods as material.

Faith had endured to this day; no matter how fanatical the believers of the gods were, they would never stuff their own benefactors into an experimental box.

They might want to, but they certainly couldn't do it.

Yet today, Cheng Shi had done it—because right before his eyes, there was no shortage of material.

The Jester said as he moved the surrounding god corpses about: "Take as much as you can carry. I'm not sure how much I'll need, and I'm not sure the experiment will succeed, but I have to try.

A lot has happened lately. I went to see Wei Mu and laid some of the universal truths bare with him. With his cheat-like brain, he told me that the future the Trickster God described for the world is very likely not what people imagine!

【Origin】 cannot be resisted, so the hope the Trickster God gave is more like a despair born of being forced into a corner.

I'm not willing to accept it. I keep feeling there's still a way in this world......"

As he said these words, Cheng Shi's expression was unusually complicated; his heart was not at all certain.

Even the gods hadn't been able to find a better way—how could he, a mere mortal bearing a predetermined title, possibly find one?

Yet his tone was resolute, because he knew that if even he, the Key of the World, lost heart, then how could the Jester, the Chosen One, the Firebearer, and this world itself still struggle on?

Zhang Zhang Jizu was a clever man. He heard both the helpless confusion in Cheng Shi's words and the courage of the Jester daring to step onto the stage. So he cut Cheng Shi off in time, not letting that sentence—an answer he could not give—land, and simply nodded in agreement:

"There must be a way.

Even if there isn't, everyone will carve out a new one.

The Predestined is the world's hope, true enough—but this world belongs to everyone too. Don't shoulder all the pressure on your own. At the very least, the Jester...... will always share the burden for you."

As he spoke, Zhang Zhang Jizu began to "sweep up the goods."

For a Gravekeeper, handling these corpses—he had a better method of containment than a personal space.

This was also an unexpected bonus for Cheng Shi's haul, because on his own, it would have been very hard to bring back so much material.

The two buried themselves in hard work at the edge of the corpse pit, single-mindedly wanting to lay a solid "foundation" for the experiment—or at least to set aside some extra reserves in case the experiment failed—completely forgetting how Cheng Shi had arrived here in the first place.

On that distant space-time Whale Bridge, a great cat eager to charge forward was still waiting!

Hong Lin waited and waited, but Cheng Shi did not come. Her brow darkened, and she leapt straight off the long bridge, arriving in the midst of the God Corpse Field.

Even though she had her own mission, she could not bring herself to let a Fate Weaver who had fallen into danger through her own hands go and never return.

No matter which world this Cheng Shi came from, since she had already intervened, she had to see it through to the end.

So she came—and then saw two porters huffing and puffing, "stealing" things inside the corpse pit.

In that instant, Hong Lin, bathed in seven-colored divine power, simply couldn't control her eyelid—it twitched hard.

She felt as if she were seeing once again that Fate Weaver from long ago, full of lies and utterly unreliable!

Back then, he had been just like this—any time there was a little benefit, he reached out without the slightest hesitation.

But even after seeing this scene, Hong Lin did not hurry them. She simply stood silently in the center of the corpse pit, escorting the two thieves.

Zhang Zhang Jizu had remained on guard. Before long, he noticed someone behind him. He started violently, and in an instant shoved Cheng Shi into the pile of corpses, then drew his scalpel and stood atop the corpse pit, turning to face alone the risk that had arrived in silence.

But when he saw that the newcomer was Hong Lin, Zhang Zhang Jizu's eyes flew wide for a moment.

"Hong Lin?"

Hong Lin cast an amused glance at the Gravekeeper's eyes—big as they were, they weren't that big—and snorted a laugh:

"It's me, and yet not me.

Have you two stolen enough? If you have, come back with me.

The deal between the Fate Weaver and me is still ongoing. I don't have much time. It's time to go."

"?"

Just as Zhang Zhang Jizu was in shock and doubt, Cheng Shi crawled out of the pile of corpses. He patted Zhang Zhang Jizu on the shoulder to reassure him, then looked up at Hong Lin in midair and smiled:

"Enough, enough. Just one last step.

A very simple step—we just want to take one look, and then we'll go."

Hong Lin raised an eyebrow, guessing what Cheng Shi wanted to see. Her gaze swept over the abyss at the bottom of the corpse pit, and she said in a complicated tone:

"You don't need to look. I'll tell you.

"Your guess is right—that Divine Throne has 'reset.'"

"!!??"

Cheng Shi shuddered violently, his pupils contracting sharply. "What do you mean, reset!?"

Hong Lin sighed, as if recalling something, then laughed with the air of someone resigned to fate, and explained to the two bewildered friends at her feet:

"It means exactly what it says.

Roughly every so often, the Divine Throne here reappears.

So it's not just you—probably many versions of you have stolen this Divine Throne, including the you from our world."

"!!!"

The instant he heard those words, a chill shot from Cheng Shi's tailbone straight up to the crown of his head!

From start to finish, he had believed that taking the Divine Throne was his own daring exploit, and that was how he had finally figured out what the fixed nature of 【Fate】 meant.

And yet now Hong Lin was saying that many Cheng Shis had taken the Divine Throne...

Then what exactly was this Divine Throne?

A quest point that kept resetting as the fixed moment arrived at different times!?

But descending into the Corpse Pit was clearly his own choice—no one had ever influenced him—how had it suddenly become an act that was "mass-replicated"?

Cheng Shi's mind was in total chaos, and a faint, half-real fear began spreading through his heart.

Seeing this, Hong Lin sighed:

"I shouldn't have told you all this, but even if I hadn't, you would have gone down anyway, and the result would be the same.

Let's go. Since you've already completed the quest, it's my turn now.

This isn't a nice place."

Saying so, Hong Lin swept her spear, instantly carrying the two of them out of the pit.
