Chapter 105: Love on the Eve of the Little New Year (4)

~9 min read 1,693 words

The Suxi Township Health Center is next to the township government, with five people, two doctors and three nurses.

The doctor was the original village barefoot doctor, who studied in the county hospital for half a year and still had a hand in dealing with headaches and fever. The nurses were all middle-aged women, and the level of giving injections was not worth complimenting. I once had an injection at the health center. The nurse's technique of inserting the needle was no different from holding a hoe handle. One needle went down, often making people gasp.

Xue Bing and Pan Xiaoqin saw me running with Liu Hongyan on my back, knowing something was wrong, and followed me to the health center.

Pan Xiaoqin was so anxious that she was about to cry, shouting everywhere to find a doctor. The township health center was not big, and her shouting immediately attracted the doctor who was eating. He was still holding chopsticks, saw Liu Hongyan lying on my back with her hair disheveled, and hurriedly arranged for me to carry her to the medical room, put her on a small iron bed covered with a white sheet, and didn't even have time to put down the chopsticks, picked up Hongyan's wrist with one hand, and tested her pulse.

After being busy for a while, the doctor breathed a sigh of relief and said, "The problem shouldn't be big, give an antipyretic injection."

Pan Xiaoqin was anxious and blurted out, "Are you sure?"

The doctor rolled his eyes at her and said, "Who can guarantee?"

Pan Xiaoqin pulled the doctor's sleeve and said, "You are a doctor, you say it's fine, it's fine. If something really happens, you can't run."

The doctor was anxious, shook off Pan Xiaoqin's hand and said, "There are only coppersmiths and blacksmiths, where is there any guarantee?" After speaking, he spread his hands and said helplessly, "The health center has this kind of equipment, and I am not Bian Que or Hua Tuo."

Pan Xiaoqin still wanted to say something, but was pulled by Xue Bing. She said to the doctor lightly, "Doctor, look, Secretary Liu is in a coma, I'm afraid it's not just a matter of an antipyretic injection."

The doctor smiled guiltily and said, "Teacher Xue, if you think it's convenient, sending to the county hospital is the best. But I only have this much medicine here, and you know the level. If there is really any major illness, we can't check it out."

I thought of Guo Wei's yellow rickshaw, so I hurriedly took out my phone and called him.

Guo Wei drove over without saying a word, took us directly to the county hospital.

Guo Wei bit his cheeks

The scattered lights of the countryside were bright, and the sound of firecrackers rang out from time to time. The country folk had already begun to thank the Kitchen God. I prayed silently to the Kitchen God, the Kitchen God who saves us from suffering and hardship, you must protect your people, please, nothing must go wrong!

As the car passed Laoyingzui, seeing a motorcycle coming from ahead, I said to Guo Wei, "It should be Director Hao returning; tell him."

Guo Wei nodded and pulled the car over to the side of the road. Sure enough, I saw Hao Qiang hunched over, practically lying on the motorcycle as he approached.

I reached out and called to him. Hao Qiang braked and looked at me, very surprised. I said, "Secretary Liu has a high fever and is in the car; we are taking her to the county hospital."

Hao Qiang was stunned for a moment, then immediately rushed to the side of the car, shouting anxiously, "Hongyan, Hongyan, what's wrong with you?"

Liu Hongyan opened her eyes weakly and murmured, "You're back? I'm fine." After saying this, she closed her eyes again and breathed rapidly.

Guo Wei let Hao Qiang get into the car and told me to drive his motorcycle back. I nodded, watching their taillights get further and further away.

I had driven motorcycles before, but only two-wheeled ones; this was my first time driving a sidecar. I felt a bit timid. After fiddling with it for a long time, the wheels moved. A gust of howling north wind blew, and in an instant, I was chilled to the bone.

The night shrouded me completely. On the road, there was only lonely me and a sidecar panting heavily. A crow flew across the night sky, leaving behind a few shrill cries. The north wind made the woods by the road howl eerily, and occasionally one or two wild rabbits darted through my headlights, rushing into the withered grass.

Laoyingzui opened its mouth wide like a monster. I looked up and felt as if I saw a lamp lit on Zhao Deliang's grave, and Zhao Deliang seemed to be standing under the lamp. My heart skipped a beat, and I almost drove the car off the cliff. A chill rose up my back, and fear spread from the tips of my hair; suddenly, my legs felt weak and my hands went numb.

Seeing the lights on at Yue Bai's house in the distance, I decided to go down, to go to Yue Bai's house; I wouldn't go any further. I was scared!

The motorcycle turned off the highway, and I drove it with a chugging sound along the tractor road into Laoyingzui Village.

The sound of the motorcycle startled the villagers. They poked their heads out from their houses and greeted me warmly.

I was too busy to answer, focusing intently and seriously on steering the vehicle.

When the car arrived at Yue Bai's door, she heard the sound and opened the door to come out. Seeing me, she was so shocked that her mouth hung open and her eyes widened.

I practically stumbled into her house, fell onto a stool, and opened my mouth to pant heavily.

Yue Bai watched me quietly, brought me a cup of boiled water, watched me drink it, and asked softly, "Why did you come?"

I told her about Liu Hongyan having a fever and being sent to the hospital, but I didn't mention seeing Zhao Deliang's shadow at Laoyingzui. I handed her the empty cup and said, "When did you get back?"

Yue Bai pointed to a bowl of rice cakes on the table and said, "I also have to come back to thank the Kitchen God."

I said with a trembling body, "Is there a fire? I'm freezing to death, I need to warm myself."

Yue Bai smiled and pointed to the kitchen, saying, "I'll help you build a fire."

She struck a match and lit a pile of pine needles in front of the stove. The firewood crackled and burned, and my whole body felt much more comfortable. In the firelight, I looked at Yue Bai's calm face, my heart stirred, and I reached out to hold her hand and squeezed it.

Yue Bai was startled and wanted to pull it back. After pulling a few times without success, she had to give up struggling and let me hold it, lowering her head and smiling faintly.

I leaned over, sat close to her, and scratched her palm with my fingers. She tilted her eyes to look at me and laughed, "Teacher Xue will be angry."

I said, "She's not here."

Yue Bai tapped my nose with her finger and said, "I'm a widow, don't mess around."

I laughed, "I don't care who you are; as long as I like it, I'll mess around."

As I spoke, my hand reached restlessly into the back of her clothes, stroking her smooth spine, and my emotions instantly soared.

Yue Bai didn't move, letting my hand roam behind her back. The firelight dimmed, and she added a few pieces of dry wood, saying faintly, "It's not that I'm unwilling, it's just that I can't do this anymore."

I didn't speak, moving my hand to her chest, rising and falling on her full breasts.

Yue Bai's body went soft, and she practically sat into my arms, saying with orchid-like breath, "The Kitchen God is watching."

I said with a grin, "It's fine. The Kitchen God has gone to heaven to report to the Jade Emperor; he's not home."

After saying this, I went to unbutton her clothes, but she protected them tightly with both hands, not letting me move, and said softly, "This is enough. Don't come again, okay?"

How could I listen? I pointed to my own thing and said, "He won't agree."

Yue Bai smiled shyly, looked down, and said with a face full of bashfulness, "I'll help you make him listen."

Yue Bai's hand brushed over like a dragonfly skimming the water. Before I could react, she broke free from my embrace, stood up, and said sternly, "You should go back."

I shook my head and refused. Her face was full of frost as she said, "A woman can lose her fortune, but she cannot lose her virtue. You have to think about me; I'm a widow and I'm alone at home. If you come like this and many people see it, what will I say?"

I said, "They can say whatever they want. I'm not afraid."

"I'm afraid!" she said with added emphasis. "If you really care about me, you'll leave now."

I had no choice but to get up. The impulse that had just surged up slid down to the soles of my feet along with the cold air. I pulled the door open, and a gust of cold wind rushed into the room, making the light cord sway and casting mottled shadows on the wall.

I was determined to leave, but she suddenly said to me softly, "Chen Feng, sister-in-law understands your feelings. If you really like me, come to the shop during the New Year; I'll be there all by myself."

I didn't speak, lowered my head, and kicked the motorcycle. With a roar, it started. I turned back onto the highway along the winding path and, facing the cold wind, drove toward Suxi Township.
