Chapter 496: Love You for Ten Thousand Years
I hailed a taxi directly to go home.
I opened the door to the house; it was pitch black inside and not a soul was there. I called out Weiwei's name and searched through every room, but saw not the slightest sign of anyone being home, so I pulled out my phone to call her.
Once the call connected, Chen Yazhi's voice came through, asking me, "Little Chen, Weiwei is taking a bath; come on over."
I hurriedly lowered my head and averted my gaze to call out "Mom," replying that I would be there immediately.
Ever since there was my child in Huang Weiwei's belly, I had changed how I addressed Bureau Chief Chen Yazhi. However, regarding Department Head Huang Shan, I still maintained my past trepidation, calling him "Department Head Huang" at every turn.
This little change of mine won high praise from Bureau Chief Chen Yazhi; Huang Weiwei once told me that her mother was very satisfied with me as a son-in-law, and her father also said my political maturity was growing.
Upon arriving at the door of Department Head Huang Shan's home, Bureau Chief Chen Yazhi opened the door for me herself.
I entered the house and didn't see Huang Weiwei; just as I was about to ask, Chen Yazhi seemed to understand what I wanted to say and pointed toward Huang Weiwei's former boudoir, saying, "She's resting on the bed."
I thanked her repeatedly and prepared to go upstairs.
Just as I was about to leave, Bureau Chief Chen Yazhi called me back, pondered for a moment, and said, "Little Chen, it's time to handle your affairs, isn't it?"
I nodded hurriedly and said, "Handle it, handle it, we'll handle it immediately. Mom, please trouble yourself to give us some guidance on how to do it."
Chen Yazhi pointed to the sofa and said, "Sit down first; let's sit and talk."
Just as I sat down, the nanny brought over a bowl of chicken soup; the fragrance was intoxicating, tempting the gluttonous worm in my belly to jump about incessantly.
We had just been eating heavy, salty, and spicy food at the late-night snack stall, and now, suddenly seeing a bowl of clear, transparent chicken soup, the alcohol in my belly surged out as if it had seen its own biological parents.
"Drink a bowl of soup," Bureau Chief Chen Yazhi ordered me. "This was stewed for Weiwei; her appetite is poor, and she can't even finish one bowl." She sighed and said, "How can things go on like this? The child won't have nutrition; how could the baby be healthy when born?"
My face flushed red as if covered by a piece of red cloth, burning hot.
Bureau Chief Chen Yazhi speaking these words without reservation seemed like concern, but in reality, it was a reproach that I hadn't fulfilled the duties of a husband.
"I've already inquired; the wedding banquet at the Hengyan Hotel is 1,880 per table. The boss there said that if you hold your wedding banquet at their hotel, they can provide the drinks, and all wedding celebration items will be charged at a fifty percent discount. I attended a friend's child's wedding there in the past and thought it was quite good."
I could only nod honestly.
Money was nothing! A banquet at 1,880 per table couldn't be considered good in Hengyue City; at most, it could only be considered medium-to-low. If we went by this standard, I could host two or three hundred tables without needing to borrow money.
I tentatively asked, "Mom, why not hold it at Lin Yin?"
Chen Yazhi shook her head and said, "Those who hold banquets at Lin Yin are all nouveau riche. We are all state cadres; we must be low-key and pay attention to our influence. Especially you, you are about to go to the provincial level; it's better to be low-key at this time."
I felt as if I had just awakened from a dream, admiring Chen Yazhi's deep foresight to the point of prostration.
"Of course, this is also the intention of Weiwei's father."
I could no longer find any other reason to refute it; they had already reached this point, and if I were to make further suggestions, I would simply be a jerk.
Suddenly, a thought popped up: did I intentionally make suggestions because I didn't want to get married in my heart? I was startled by this thought of mine and stammered, "Mom, I'll listen to everything you say."
Bureau Chief Chen Yazhi beamed with joy, waved her hand, and said, "Go see Weiwei; just stay at home tonight, don't go back."
I hesitated for a moment, thinking to myself, *You old hag, how am I supposed to be intimate with my wife at your house? *
Bureau Chief Chen Yazhi seemed to understand my thoughts and said softly, "Young people need to know how to exercise restraint, especially at this stage. Go on."
As if granted an amnesty, I jumped up the stairs in a few steps, pushed open the bedroom door, and saw my wife already sleeping sweetly under the dim light.
I walked over on tiptoe, leaned over the head of the bed, and kissed her on her smooth forehead.
This kiss startled Huang Weiwei awake; as soon as she opened her eyes and saw it was me, she immediately opened her arms and pulled me into a full embrace.
I lost my footing for a moment and my whole body pressed directly onto her slightly protruding belly. I was shocked and scrambled to crawl away, but Huang Weiwei wouldn't let go of her arms around my neck, saying softly, "Husband, kiss me."
I struggled and said, "Wife, I'm pressing on the baby."
She gave a charming smile and said, "Silly, right now she is at most just an embryo."
Hearing her say this, my tense heart finally calmed down. I hugged her waist and asked, "Wife, is it hard?"
Huang Weiwei stared into my eyes, and as she looked, she laughed and said, "Husband, why don't you carry a child, then you'll know if it's hard or not."
I kissed her lips and said, "Wife, I don't have that function. If I had that function, I definitely wouldn't let my dear wife suffer this hardship."
She reached out a fair and petite finger and poked my forehead, saying, "Silly, men and women are arranged by Heaven, and each fulfills their own responsibilities. Men strive outside to support the family and achieve a career, while women stay at home to manage the household and raise children, passing on the family line; it has been like this for thousands of years, so where do these silly words of yours come from?"
These words were like an iron, smoothing out all the wrinkles and folds in my heart, making one feel incomparably comfortable and satisfied.
Looking at her slightly plump waist and the pregnancy spots that had appeared faintly on her face—which was originally as white as porcelain—my heart felt a bit uncomfortable. This flower-like, jade-like woman had gradually lost her luster under my ravages.
I lowered my head and kissed her cheeks, her eyebrows, and her eyes.
She closed her eyes slightly, quietly welcoming my kiss. After a long while, she blurted out a sentence: "Husband, do you want to?"
My heart trembled, and I said vaguely, "I do."
She smiled lightly, turned over to sit up, looked at me, and said, "Husband, come on then."
Just as I was about to act, the words of Bureau Chief Chen Yazhi suddenly popped into my head. My body, which had been full of enthusiasm, suddenly wilted. I pulled her into an embrace and said affectionately in her ear, "Wife, for the sake of our next generation, we must exercise restraint."
"I won't!" she said stubbornly. "Are you the woman, or am I the woman?"
"Of course it's you."
"Since you know it's me, why are you meddling in a woman's business? I've asked an expert; it's fine." A blush spread across her face, charming and cute, making one's heart flutter.
She suddenly wrinkled her nose and sniffed hard, then frowned and asked, "Did you drink?"
I nodded and said, "I just came back from the county; they insisted on seeing me off and wouldn't stop until I drank a few cups."
I didn't dare say that I had been drinking with Zhu Huayu and Li Lian; women are all narrow-minded and naturally prone to jealousy. Even a refined lady like Huang Weiwei could not escape this innate mindset.
"I can understand that!" she said softly. "After all, you were once a leader in the county, and now that you are being transferred, it is only right and proper for colleagues to see you off."
I put on a dizzy, muddled look and said, "If I didn't drink, they would say I looked down on them. I had no choice, so I drank a bit too much. Actually, my heart feels like it's burning with a fire right now; it's so uncomfortable."
She reached out and felt my forehead with a pained expression, saying, "Husband, go wash up and sleep. I'll watch you sleep."
My heart was filled with tenderness; being watched by a woman while sleeping is such a moving thing.
After this episode, Huang Weiwei no longer pestered me about the pleasures of the bed, but instead urged me to go take a bath quickly.
When I returned after my bath, I saw her leaning against the head of the bed, as quiet as a painting, and also like a water lily, emitting a faint fragrance.
"Wife, Mom said we should hold a ceremony," I said, lying beside her and wrapping my arms around her waist.
"What ceremony?" she turned her head to look at me and asked, "A wedding banquet?"
I gave a hum and said, "I think we should hold one too; I want you to wear a wedding dress and marry me."
"Okay!" She sat up straight in excitement, twiddling my earlobe as she said, "Hubby, I want to marry you looking beautiful."
"But..." I started to speak but stopped myself.
"What is it?"
"The provincial office wants me to report for duty immediately; the timing is really tight!" I sighed and said, "I've never felt that time is truly as precious as gold."
"Hubby," she said softly, "A man should prioritize his career. Since the organization needs you, you cannot forget your work for the sake of personal feelings. We are already husband and wife in the eyes of the law; whether or not we hold this ceremony doesn't really mean anything."
Her words moved me once again; to have such an understanding woman as my wife, I must have cultivated great fortune in my past life!
"But if we don't hold it, how can I explain it to Mom? And how could I face you?" I said, feigning difficulty.
"It's fine, I'll handle my mom. You just need to do your job well."
"No, I want to give you a wedding," I said firmly.
"Alright, once you've settled down, I'll bring our son and marry you." She giggled, her face full of happiness, and laid her body flat, resting her head on my chest.
Her hair tickled my nostrils, making me sneeze loudly.
Holding her, my heart became incomparably calm. It was as if all the worldly distractions in the world had been swept away; flowing beside Wang Mei, there was nothing but tenderness and sweetness.
"When are you leaving?" she asked.
"I'm setting off first thing tomorrow morning."
"Why so urgent?" She became uneasy, turned her face, and said, "I haven't even had a good look at you yet."
"Look now," I said teasingly, "Your husband is a handsome guy, right?"
She pursed her lips and smiled, saying, "Of course I know my husband is a handsome guy. If you weren't handsome, I wouldn't love you."
"Oh my, so you're a woman who judges by appearances," I teased her, "It's a good thing I'm passable, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to win my wife's heart."
Her face turned red, and she gave my back a pinch, saying, "Feng, I'm warning you, once you get to the provincial capital, you are not allowed to look at other women."
I put on a look of deep distress and said, "Wife, unless you gouge my eyeballs out and keep them at home, I can't guarantee I won't look at people."
She said, both shy and angry, "Damn Chen Feng, is that what I meant?"
"Then what did you mean?"
"Sigh," she let out a long sigh and said, "Damn Chen Feng, you don't even know how sad I am inside."
