Chapter 146: So It Was You
Qi Fei covered Ying Shuigen with the white sheet and sighed: "The karma you spoke of doesn't seem to have protected him until the end."
"So, fate is something that also depends on oneself. If he weren't greedy, he wouldn't have courted death, right?" Zhong Kui said, patting Xiao Lu on the back. "Young man, don't have a God complex. You did what you were supposed to do, but you can't save everyone."
Xiao Lu nodded, seemingly understanding, his mood clearly better than before.
However, Qi Fei's mood was not so easily improved. The person most likely to provide the answer to who killed She Xiaohui was Ying Shuigen.
If Ying Shuigen had a mountain of enemies, the scope for finding someone who hated She Xiaohui—who never stepped out of her home—shouldn't be very large.
Unfortunately, Ying Shuigen was dead too.
Zhong Kui pushed open the window. The early spring breeze, laden with the scent of magnolias, rushed in, sweeping away the gloom of the room: "Such beautiful weather today, let's go out for a stroll."
Qi Fei looked at Zhong Kui, puzzled: "Today? So suddenly?" He knew this wasn't Zhong Kui's usual style.
Zhong Kui smiled gently and suddenly reached out to touch Qi Fei's cheek: "My dear, your stubble is growing out."
Qi Fei could see the snickering expressions of Wu Shanqiu and the guards. His face turned red instantly, and he whispered: "Let's get downstairs first."
As if she had succeeded, Zhong Kui took his arm and pulled him toward the stairs.
Between the inpatient and outpatient departments of Nancheng Hospital, there was a small garden where several patients in hospital gowns were sunning themselves.
Zhong Kui looked up at the sun, then at the back door of the outpatient clinic, and muttered to herself: "It's about time."
Qi Fei didn't understand: "What time?"
Zhong Kui smiled and tugged his arm: "Just follow me. You'll definitely be very happy."
Qi Fei felt helpless. The case had been dragging on for so long without a breakthrough, and his stress levels were through the roof; happiness was certainly out of the question.
However, he found even Zhong Kui's unpredictability to be quite cute now.
He had no choice but to patiently follow her toward the outpatient clinic.
Before entering, Zhong Kui handed him a mask. They turned a corner into the internal medicine clinic and ran straight into Li Liang.
"You're finally here?" Li Liang's words made it clear that Zhong Kui had arranged this with him beforehand.
Zhong Kui reached out, and Li Liang immediately handed her two white coats hanging nearby.
Zhong Kui took one and gave it to Qi Fei: "Put it on."
Qi Fei was left completely bewildered.
But seeing the brilliance in Zhong Kui's eyes and her unquestionable confidence, he obediently put on the coat. After putting on the mask, he looked exactly like a young doctor, with no connection to a criminal police officer.
"And then?" Qi Fei asked.
Zhong Kui glanced at the wall clock and said: "It's about time."
With that, she pulled him toward the registration hall on the first floor.
The two stood behind the triage desk, watching everyone who entered the hall. Time ticked away, second by second.
Just as Qi Fei was about to lose his patience, the appearance of one person made him instantly tense up from his boredom.
The man had a buzz cut and wore a designer coat, looking deeply troubled as he entered the hospital—Chen Shan, the unlucky fool who had been played like a fiddle by Xi He.
Qi Fei looked at Zhong Kui with a questioning gaze, as if asking, is he the one we're waiting for?
Zhong Kui's smiling, determined eyes had already answered him.
She gave a look, and the two followed Chen Shan calmly.
Registration, upstairs—they weren't going to internal medicine, but to dermatology.
Yet Chen Shan was moving freely; there was no sign of any injury.
In the dermatology clinic, there were two seats facing each other in one room, one of which was empty.
Chen Shan walked in and sat before the doctor on duty. Qi Fei sat down calmly opposite, as if he were another doctor who had just started his shift.
"What seems to be the problem?" The dermatologist looked at Chen Shan's basic information and asked routinely.
"I'm not here for a medical issue. I have a large transaction at the bank that requires fingerprint authorization. The validity of my previous 'no fingerprint' certificate has expired, so I'm here to get another one," Chen Shan said, stating his request skillfully.
Sitting opposite, Qi Fei, wearing his mask, had already widened his eyes in surprise.
He had to quickly lower his head and pretend to flip through inspection reports to avoid arousing Chen Shan's suspicion.
"Let me see?" The doctor turned to sit directly facing Chen Shan and asked him to spread his hands out.
Chen Shan complied.
"Your condition isn't just a simple lack of fingerprints; it's likely a rare disease. Does anyone in your family have this problem?" Chen Shan's question clearly piqued the doctor's curiosity.
"I don't know. I'm an orphan," Chen Shan answered dejectedly.
The doctor tactfully didn't ask more. While writing the certificate, he advised: "I think you should get genetic testing. Although it doesn't affect daily life, if confirmed, it is a hereditary disease after all. Does your child have this problem?"
"No, I don't have children," Chen Shan answered again.
The doctor couldn't help but look at him twice: "Fine. Single, very rich—that's nice."
Just as he was speaking, a shadow fell over Chen Shan. Qi Fei's tall figure appeared, and he pulled off his mask right in front of him.
Upon seeing this, Chen Shan forced a stiff smile: "Officer Qi? Why are you dressed like this? Is there an undercover mission?"
"Yes. I suspect you are involved in a homicide case. Come with me," Qi Fei said, already grabbing Chen Shan's arm firmly and pinning his hands behind his back.
"You've got the wrong person?? I'm the victim! I didn't kill that leukemia patient!" Chen Shan shouted, feeling wronged.
"I'm not talking about Tian Xiaodong. I'm talking about Huang Daqiu, She Xiaohui, and Ying Shuigen's two sons—four lives!" Qi Fei said immediately.
Chen Shan began to struggle violently: "Who are you talking about? I don't know them!" However, because of his intense movements, his collar was pulled, revealing the area of his collarbone, where two small, newly healed puncture scars were faintly visible.
Qi Fei saw this and became even more certain of his guess. He applied more force to his hands, nearly dislocating Chen Shan's shoulders: "Explain where you were bitten by a snake first!"
Hearing the word "snake," Chen Shan trembled all over, as if paralyzed by lightning, and suddenly lost all his strength.
"We found unknown DNA on the snake's fangs. If you're sure you're innocent, a comparison will tell!" Qi Fei added.
At this moment, Zhong Kui had already walked up to him, looking at him quietly, as if observing prey caught in her claws: "So it was you." Her light tone was like that of a winner in a game of hide-and-seek. ===== CHAPTER 147 =====
