Yan picked up the black tea on the table, watching the leaves drift and sink in the slightly murky liquid.

“That child surprisingly accepted it,” Yan sipped the tea, then began flipping through the documents on the table.

“Qing Xukong, male, 17 years old...” Yan’s hand froze, his gaze fixed on the family background section, his expression growing solemn.

“Mother deceased... father long resident overseas. Seems like a miserable child...” Yan set down the tea, pondering whether his conversation tonight had been inappropriate.

“I should find a chance to apologize...” Yan seemed to make up his mind, lifted the tea again, and took another sip.

“Can’t just eat and drink for free—find some way to earn money.” No matter how little Yan understood human society, he knew money was essential to survive in it; he thought of that fellow Ling Yu, who surely hadn’t considered this, and felt a flicker of helplessness.

“The moles I previously placed should have had some contact with the upper echelons of this society—I’ll trouble them.” Yan set down the tea and pulled out a file folder, opening it with the cautious care of someone making a momentous decision.

Amid these fragmented bits of daily life, could he finally shed his disguise toward the world?
