Chapter 28: Who Says I Want to Get Back Together? Long Live Being Single

~10 min read 1,880 words

Dong Xuan certainly didn't betray Guan Yue!

However, with Seeing Yan Li's intelligence system, he was constantly triggering relevant intel.

How Guan Yue had reported the news to Dong Xuan, how she had egged Dong Xuan into breaking up with him, how Dong Xuan still had lingering feelings for him yet urged her to let go... Seeing Yan Li knew most of it.

To be fair, from a best friend's perspective, what Guan Yue did might not be wrong—she genuinely had Dong Xuan's best interests at heart.

But in Seeing Yan Li's eyes, Guan Yue was the "troublemaker" and scheming advisor by Dong Xuan's side; he hated her down to the marrow of his bones.

Not throwing her out the door directly was already out of respect for Dong Xuan's face, and for the times she'd helped pass along messages.

"No, that's sowing discord."

Guan Yue reacted quickly—although she didn't know how Seeing Yan Li had found out, she felt Dong Xuan wouldn't betray her.

Besides, she knew perfectly well that after the Yan-Dong breakup there was almost no contact, and all messages went through her; it made no logical sense for Dong Xuan to betray her.

Seeing Yan Li didn't argue back, just looked at her with a cold smile: "So you're admitting you're the main culprit behind our breakup?"

Guan Yue felt a little guilty under Seeing Yan Li's gaze, lowered her head without speaking. Seeing Yan Li pressed the advantage, unleashing a torrent of words at her.

"Put your hand on your conscience—have I ever treated you badly?"

"Whenever I bought Dong Xuan something good to eat, there was always a share for you, right? For skits and assignments, I helped you rehearse and brainstorm plenty too."

"And that one time you got into an argument with someone in the girls' dorm, and her boyfriend came to cause trouble—didn't I help you sort it out?"

"I treated you as a good friend, but how did you treat me? When Dong Xuan and I had a little misunderstanding, you didn't help explain or smooth things over—you even urged Dong Xuan to break up with me..."

At first, Guan Yue felt she was in the wrong and guilty, getting lectured by Seeing Yan Li until she couldn't lift her head; she even put down the pig's trotter in her hand.

But when she heard the word "misunderstanding," Guan Yue suddenly snapped back to her senses.

"I saw with my own eyes you kissing that little vixen surnamed Huang in the rehearsal room—and you call that a misunderstanding?!"

"You also said rehearsal room—wasn't that just rehearsing?"

This time, it was Seeing Yan Li's momentum that faltered; conversely, Guan Yue's voice grew louder, her aura surging upward.

"Bullshit. I've never seen anyone rehearse a kissing scene. Lucky it was the rehearsal room—if it had been a hotel, would you two have been rehearsing a bed scene too?"

Zhou Yiwei, who had just heard the commotion and come out of the bedroom, stood by watching dumbfounded.

Is this woman really that fierce?

And the more Guan Yue talked, the more fired up she got. Back then, if Dong Xuan hadn't held her back, she would have already blocked the door to curse out this heartless man.

"Don't think only I saw it. Afterward I went and asked around with Old Dong—we know everything about you and that little vixen, crystal clear. Dare you say the two of you are pure and clean, nothing going on?"

"..."

Every bone in Seeing Yan Li's body was stubborn except his teeth: "Anyway, my conscience is clear?"

Guan Yue laughed in spite of her anger: "Fine, the little vixen surnamed Huang has a clear conscience—then what about your class's Han Wenwen and Che Xiao..."

"Hey hey hey."

Seeing Yan Li quickly called out several times, stopping Guan Yue: "Don't talk nonsense. I have nothing to do with either of them—purely classmates."

"I don't think so."

Guan Yue, indignant: "That Che Xiao even went and caused trouble for Dong Xuan—probably because of you."

"When did she cause trouble? How come I don't know about this?"

Seeing Yan Li wasn't playing dumb—he really didn't know about this; the intelligence system hadn't shown it either.

"A long time ago, right when you and Old Dong had just gotten together. It wasn't a big deal—just some arguing and shoving, they were talked apart and never spoke again after that."

Only then did Seeing Yan Li realize—he had won Dong Xuan over in the second semester of freshman year, which was 2001; he didn't even have the system yet.

For minor conflicts and clashes like this, the system might not trigger. Dong Xuan and Che Xiao never told him either—no wonder he didn't know.

"A buttload of rotten peach blossoms—why did Old Dong have to hang herself from this one tree?"

Guan Yue's face was full of contempt. Seeing Yan Li was utterly wronged: "I'm really innocent."

How to put it—Seeing Yan Li was good-looking, tall, had a cheerful yet steady personality, was popular in class, and was liked by the female classmates.

Han Wenwen was considered the class beauty of their vocational class—at least most of the boys in their class thought she was the prettiest.

Seeing Yan Li was the type who was naturally drawn to dealing with good-looking people or things, so he got along well with Han Wenwen.

Che Xiao, on the other hand, often rehearsed skits and such with Seeing Yan Li; the two were the class's most frequent male-female rehearsal partners, so they were fairly close.

However, in all honesty, Seeing Yan Li swore by the lamp—he and Han Wenwen really had no relationship whatsoever, just classmates and friends.

As for Che Xiao, Seeing Yan Li admitted the two had once had an ambiguous period.

But later he felt their personalities didn't mesh, and after he met Dong Xuan, it gradually fizzled out on its own.

The two didn't fall out either; to this day they're still decent classmates. When he was filming in Hengdian, Che Xiao even called once to check in.

But during Seeing Yan Li and Dong Xuan's relationship, he and Che Xiao—including Han Wenwen—never had any improper behavior.

On this point, Zhou Yiwei also came out to testify: "Li-ge really has nothing going on with Wenwen and the others—she has a boyfriend."

Guan Yue shot back sharply: "Then what about that vixen surnamed Huang?"

Zhou Yiwei paused, reached for the braised meat on the dining table: "It's gotten a bit cold—I'll go reheat it for you."

Useless!

Seeing Yan Li cursed inwardly, stopped arguing with Guan Yue, pulled out a chair and sat down.

"Out with it—what's the reason for coming today?"

"I'm here on Old Dong's behalf to negotiate with you."

Guan Yue wiped the oil from her mouth and hands with a tissue, but because the pig's trotter had gelatin and the oil was sticky, it became a mess; she ended up going to the bathroom to wash her face.

When she came back out, the momentum she'd built up was gone, but she still forced herself to maintain her aura.

"Old Dong said, if you want to get back together with her, you must agree to three conditions."

Seeing Yan Li's expression didn't change: "Let's hear them."

Guan Yue took out a piece of paper, cleared her throat, and began to read with measured cadence.

"First, immediately cut off all ties with that Huang man, and sign a written guarantee that you will never stray again."

"Second, besides work, you must set aside time every day to be with her, report any plans in advance, answer calls immediately, and never complain that she's clingy."

"Third, sincerely acknowledge your mistake this time; when conflicts arise, actively ease them, make her happy, and never ignore her."

"Finished?"

Seeing Yan Li had listened in silence; after Guan Yue finished, he asked a question, and only after receiving her affirmative reply did he speak with an odd tone.

"When did I say I wanted to get back together?"

"Huh?"

Guan Yue was stunned. Seeing Yan Li spread his hands: "She was the one who wanted to break up. Break up, then break up. Now she wants to reconcile? What do you think I am?"

"You don't want to reconcile?"

Guan Yue was even more stunned—this wasn't what she and Dong Xuan had analyzed.

Earlier, Seeing Yan Li had called her proactive, subtly inquiring about Dong Xuan—wasn't that him trying to retreat?

Precisely because of this, Dong Xuan had bribed Lin Jiachuan to come over and make up the bed, buy a fan—trying to further mend her relationship with Seeing Yan Li.

After that, Guan Yue stepped in to play the good cop.

This so-called "Three Articles" were mostly negotiable, except for the first one.

Guan Yue's goal was to test his attitude, give Dong Xuan some backing, warn Seeing Yan Li, and simultaneously help Dong Xuan secure room to maneuver—ready to advance or retreat.

Once they understood his position, Dong Xuan would come herself to rekindle their old romance, pout, cry a little, and understandingly waive some conditions—until Seeing Yan Li was moved to tears, devoted to Dong Xuan forever, never daring to stray again.

But the plan was perfect—unfortunately, Seeing Yan Li didn't follow the script; one sentence shut Guan Yue down completely.

Seeing Yan Li watched Guan Yue's dumbfounded expression and grinned inwardly. Dong Xuan's plan was indeed clever—but the System had leaked it to him.

Knowing the opponent's hand, Seeing Yan Li naturally wouldn't let himself be manipulated—he began manipulating them instead.

"That's right. I think being single is fine. Do whatever I want, no one watching over me, free and easy."

"So, let's just break up. Looks like we weren't meant for each other."

"If she doesn't hate me, we can still be friends in the future."

Near North Electric, a small apartment complex

North Electric's summer break had begun; some students went home, others stayed in Jingcheng, hoping to find opportunities there.

Neither Guan Yue nor Dong Xuan had left—they shared a rented apartment with a few other girls, running daily interviews.

"..."

Dong Xuan, with her pure features and fair skin, sat cross-legged on the bed. After hearing Guan Yue recount Seeing Yan Li's words, she furrowed her brow.

After a moment of silence, she asked again: "What else did he say?"

"Oh, he said he wants to repay you for the fan you bought—but I didn't take it. He said he'll come by personally to give it to you."

Guan Yue answered, then hesitated and asked uncertainly.

"Old Dong, do you think he's really serious about breaking up—he's being so clear-cut?"

Ignoring Guan Yue's doubt, Dong Xuan rested her chin on her hand, equally baffled.

Things had been going so well, reconciliation within reach—why had Seeing Yan Li suddenly changed his attitude?

After a moment, Dong Xuan thought of a possibility and clenched her teeth: "That bastard must have found a new fox spirit."

"Achoo~"

In a hotel room in Hengdian, Qin Lan sneezed, rubbed her itchy nose, and stared at her silent phone, lost in thought.

Is that bastard forgotten me, or did his phone run out of credit...?
