Chapter 108: Takeoff and Chase
Upon hearing the engine roar from afar, the two shifted from a jog to a full sprint—for Brian's part.
Henry still pretended to be in a rush, but in reality, he followed Brian at a leisurely pace. The panic on his face and his frantic movements were pure acting.
Judging by the runway position, the takeoff direction, and the relative position of the pursuing vehicle convoy, the enemy could only come to see the plane off. It was truly a grand and solemn send-off team, complete with deadly fireworks.
So Henry had no intention of interfering. His bottom line was Audrey He Ben getting injured; until then, everything else was within the acceptable range of damage, including these heart-stopping moments. Of course, it would be best if none of Brian's group got killed.
The small passenger plane began moving, sliding from the apron onto the runway, with the cabin door still open. However, the plane's turbine engines clearly increased their output, the abnormal, ear-splitting sound vibrating the eardrums.
Pressing against Henry's back, Brian made both of them run in a crouched posture. They rounded the position of the engine air intakes to avoid being sucked in.
He first pushed Henry onto the plane, then jumped on himself, but had no intention of closing the cabin door. He simply shouted toward the cockpit: "Everyone's on board, take off! Take off!"
After shouting, he half-hung outside the cabin door, holding a rifle and spraying fire backward. At the same time, the plane began to taxi, the engine noise gradually increasing.
The return gunfire from behind made everyone on the plane realize the situation. However, the fields of fire on the plane were too limited; only Brian's position could return fire. So the others could only stare helplessly.
But to say nothing could be done wasn't entirely true. Old Bernie pushed Henry, and although he didn't push him away, he spoke urgently: "Go sit in your seat. We have your support here."
Henry followed suit, giving up his position to guard Audrey He Ben, who was sitting in the middle of the plane.
First confirming that this employer had fastened her seatbelt and hadn't taken off her body armor, Henry asked: "Is everything alright? Boss. I didn't have time to ask you before."
"I'm fine, child," Audrey He Ben calmly comforted.
"The plane is about to take off; once it's airborne, we'll be safe." Only then did Henry sit behind her, to block bullets. If any bullets actually came from behind.
At the cabin door, Old Bernie wrapped an arm around Brian's waist and used one hand to steady himself. This allowed Brian to use the rifle with both hands without falling out of the increasingly fast-moving plane.
The other two were responsible for reloading, swapping Brian's empty weapons for firearms loaded with bullets.
However, when boarding, they hadn't brought much ammunition or weapons onto the plane, let alone refilled the empty magazines. So there weren't many usable weapons.
Before long, the only thing left to hand to Brian was a pistol.
Fortunately, by this time the plane's speed was sufficient. The Italian pilot pulled back on the rudder, and the plane began to pitch up.
A moment later, the plane successfully lifted off. The pursuing convoy, as if venting their anger, operated the machine guns on their vehicles and sprayed fire indiscriminately.
Brian also emptied his last magazine and retreated into the plane. Together with Old Bernie, they cooperated to close the cabin door.
Brian and the others, slumped inside the cabin, shouted aloud: "Yeah, we finally escaped."
"Brian, good job."
"Haha, everyone performed very well."
"Yay, we beat those niggers."
At this point, an untimely voice came from the female flight attendant, who was also seated: "Gentlemen, although you are very happy, the plane is currently taking off. Please return to your seats immediately and fasten your seatbelts to ensure safety."
Brian said: "Alright, old timers, tie yourselves to your seats. Once we're in level flight, I'll go discuss with the pilot where we should land."
Although the interior of the plane was quite tilted during takeoff, Brian and the others were trained special forces veterans. Climbing back to their seats and sitting down was just a small matter.
The group thus flew away from the land of Somalia without a ripple, carrying the joy of having survived a disaster.
Suddenly, Sam shouted excitedly: "Hey, look. There's a rainbow-colored spray outside. Is this a special sunset view? It's the first time I've ever seen it."
Upon hearing this, everyone turned their heads to look out the window on Sam's side. Some admired, some praised, and some... cursed: "Damn it, we're doomed!"
"Brian, what's going on?" Old Bernie asked the man who had cursed.
"Open your eyes and look. The source of the spray is our wing. What do you think that is?"
Mark said in surprise: "You don't mean to say that's our gasoline, do you?"
"Oh, great. Someone's IQ has come online and figured out what the hell that is," Brian said with relief.
"We won't fall, will we?" Sam asked.
"Not for the moment."
"Oh, that's really good news," Sam said disappointedly: "So we will eventually fall, right?"
"But not now." Brian unbuckled his seatbelt and said at the same time: "We still have time to find a solution; that's the good news. I'll go discuss with the pilot where to fly."
No one screamed hysterically; that was probably the most fortunate thing. However, everyone was still very concerned about their own lives.
Old Bernie and the others all unbuckled their seatbelts and squeezed with Brian to the cockpit door. Perhaps a crowd wouldn't fit into the cockpit, but at least they could stick their heads in and see what the people inside were doing.
Henry came to Audrey He Ben's side, looking at the lady's calm expression. "Boss, are you okay?"
Seeing that everyone had already unbuckled their seatbelts and was running around, even though the seatbelt light hadn't gone out, Audrey He Ben still moved to a different position, to the window, allowing Henry to sit beside her.
She calmly said: "Child, I'm fine. I just thought I had experienced enough in this life and that nothing new would happen anymore. But a plane potentially crashing is truly a first."
Having experienced war and filmed movies, one could say Audrey He Ben had personally experienced the worst and the most fantastical things this world had to offer.
Not to mention this world also had all sorts of strange mutants capable of flying, burrowing, moving mountains, and toppling seas, and their appearance, so different from humans, had further tempered ordinary people's hearts to be incredibly strong.
Ordinary 'surprises' simply couldn't shake them. Just like Lady He Ben at this moment.
But a plane crash... this novel experience was something she really didn't want to have. This was Audrey He Ben's only inner thought. Calm, and without a ripple.
"It's likely that when those old blacks were spraying with machine guns, they hit the plane's wing and punctured the fuel tank. At least we weren't blown up into a fireball on the spot; that's a good thing, isn't it?" The veteran Italian pilot calmly explained the possible situation.
Day 5, celebrating the release; there will be an extra update at 9 PM tonight.
