Chapter 132: Busy Activity Schedule

~8 min read 1,521 words

When Henry followed Lady He Ben, accompanied by UNICEF personnel, they visited again the child protection institutions built by the United Nations. The list was not limited to the African continent; impoverished countries in South Asia, Central America, and South America were all on it.

This time, whether it was Lady He Ben or the United Nations personnel, whenever they went to regions with war concerns, they dared not act separately as they had the previous time.

Throughout the entire journey, they were accompanied and protected by peacekeeping forces, and of course, a private security team provided by an insurance company was indispensable.

Cooperation with Brian Mills and others was limited to that unsuccessful visit to Somalia. Afterward, every visit mostly involved cooperation with different security teams, with no fixed team.

It was not that they were unwilling to settle on one; rather, for this kind of mission-based work, both sides' schedules had to align for an arrangement to be possible. Some people, after earning a sum of money, would not want to work until they had squandered it all.

So, if one wanted to fix a single security team, the only way was to sign a long-term contract with them. Even on days when they were not active in Africa, they would still be paid.

Considering these teams were provided by insurance companies, these businessmen certainly would not pay extra money in vain. Thus, they could only work out a rapport with a different team each time.

Fortunately, Lady He Ben's security work was very simple, with United Nations personnel primarily taking the lead at the front. No matter how chaotic the African continent was, these "old blacks" would not easily provoke the peacekeeping forces wearing blue helmets.

Going to places outside Africa was even simpler; having the local government dispatch police or military escorts was sufficient.

The situation in Somalia that time was truly an exception among exceptions.

Moreover, after Henry and others escaped, that African country erupted into a full-scale civil war, with various warlords rising up. In other words, Lady He Ben had very bad luck entering that country just before the civil war broke out.

As everyone knows, the early stage of any great chaos is when the strangest people appear the most. After several rounds of survival of the fittest, those mentally abnormal oddballs would either be eliminated or grow so large that normal people knew to avoid them.

This is also why someone would dare to pull a tiger's whiskers, attempting to kidnap a major Hollywood star at the moment they were detached from United Nations protection.

Generally speaking, activities arranged by the United Nations were very reliable, especially regarding safety issues. After all, Lady He Ben was their brand; if the brand were smashed, it would be a very serious matter of face.

If the five major bullies within the United Nations slammed the table, one would have to stand at attention; there was nothing to negotiate. But a group of "old blacks" from the Third World also dared to disgrace the United Nations! Truly, some things are tolerable, and some are not.

According to what Henry learned from dealing privately with peacekeeping forces, shortly after the Somalia incident, peacekeeping forces entered southern Somalia for live-fire drills.

It is said that now that area is the most peaceful place in the currently war-torn Somalia.

However, a major reason Lady He Ben felt so at ease was, of course, the presence of Henry, this little assistant. A special person who could fly and whose body bullets could not penetrate would make anyone feel very secure at any time.

As for the immense value behind being able to lift a small passenger plane into flight, Lady He Ben did not quite understand it. If he could discuss this point with others, perhaps someone would tell him the difficulty involved.

Although Henry did not explicitly ask Lady He Ben to keep his secret, Audrey still respected her little assistant's wishes and never revealed even a fraction of that experience to outsiders. If asked, she would give the formal public relations response.

As for other abilities displayed during the evacuation process, such as driving skills and marksmanship supported by heightened senses, they might have aroused the suspicion of the careful Brian. But that still fell within the realm of normal humans, or was just the result of good luck, so no one paid attention.

In any case, with Henry assisting on the side, Audrey He Ben's work indeed became much easier.

The lady never thought of forcing Henry to do more important, more great work. After all, what he was doing now was assisting the United Nations in providing aid to children in the Third World; could there be anything more important or greater than this?

Jumping into a battlefield between two armies to directly persuade both sides to cease fire? Audrey He Ben did not think Henry could accomplish such a thing. So, coming to help him was very good; at least it was much better than being a background extra actor in Hollywood before.

Or perhaps this little assistant was simply too useful; Henry took care of most of the trivial matters during the visits.

Audrey He Ben only needed to arrive at a location, play with the children, and take photos. The rest of the daily work was reviewing the draft reports Henry prepared and making appropriate modifications.

After reviewing a few times, Lady He Ben simply stopped modifying them. If she read it once and found no problems, she would sign it as the official report for submission.

After finishing the visit schedule, they returned to New York to submit the report at the United Nations. In between, they attended fundraising banquets, coaxing large sums of money out of the pockets of the wealthy.

Then set off again...

Henry finally understood where Mr. Givenchy's criticism that Audrey He Ben was too crazy came from.

Each round trip between a Third World country and New York counted as a complete cycle and took up more than half a month. Lady He Ben could run two or three such schedules consecutively before returning to her home in Switzerland for a short rest of a week or two, and then set off again.

If people knew the density of Lady He Ben's schedule, the nickname "Model Worker Sister" would have appeared twenty or thirty years earlier.

Even while staying in her own home, Lady He Ben was not idle. She loved gardening and reading, both of which were time-consuming activities. Especially gardening, which not only took time but also physical strength.

Henry could not rest just because Lady He Ben had returned to her home in Switzerland. One of the job contents he had applied for was to serve as a driver.

So, in that beautiful villa, he had a small room of his own. He drove for the lady when she went out, and during ordinary times, he stayed in the villa doing assistant work.

Do not think that because Lady He Ben had retired from the screen, the number of people contacting her daily was not small at all.

The main focus, of course, was the people from UNICEF. Others included the lady's property management personnel and fund investment managers.

If there was free time, he would help the lady tend to those flowers and plants. Since they could only return to Switzerland every one or two months, organizing the flower beds and courtyard took quite a lot of time.

These tasks were very easy for Henry; under the operation of a series of Kryptonian abilities, not to say they could be finished in the blink of an eye, they certainly did not take much time.

As for the gardening in the flower beds and courtyard, the essence required was not the result, but the process of calm care. So Henry did not overstep his bounds and organize everything for Lady He Ben.

Anyway, Henry could still squeeze out some free time at night, so he simply moved the computer from his rental place in Los Angeles—rent was still paid monthly, and the lease had not been terminated—to ponder some program software.

By the way, according to the original history, Linux appeared on the newsgroups in August of this year and was uploaded to the FTP server of Helsinki University of Technology in September.

If there was a change, it was that the release was not just the kernel. Instead, in collaboration with the signatories on the Joker BBS, a portion of GNU components were integrated to form an executable free operating system.

This counted as accelerated progress. And Henry, with the username CK, joined this open-source shared software development feast.

However, he could not be like others, soaking in the BBS to communicate with people all the time. He was just a hidden big shot, occasionally throwing out a package under the Linux architecture.

At the end of '91, a shocking piece of news to the business world came: Howard Stark and his wife died in a car accident!
