Chapter 24: Seven Days Later

~8 min read 1,431 words

The seven days agreed upon with Old George had arrived, and Henry was preparing to drive off alone. This time, he wouldn't need anyone to lead him or introduce him.

Old John was still fumbling near the bar counter as if the work would never end. Looking at the person about to leave, he asked, "Is Old George definitely setting sail? Why not call first to avoid making a wasted trip?"

"Doesn't matter. I have to go get Tang Mu's documents anyway. Even if they aren't sailing, I'll use it to check the situation."

Henry actually had nothing much to pack. Once on a crab boat, basically no one would want to shower or change into clean clothes. After all, as soon as you stepped onto the deck, in less than three minutes, you'd be soaked as if you'd been dipped in seawater.

Wearing a raincoat or that big coat was mainly to block the wind and prevent body heat from being carried away too quickly. Wanting to stay dry was purely a fool's dream.

So boarding the boat required no change of clothes; all necessary tools were already fully stocked on board. Therefore, Henry's so-called preparation simply meant showing up; he didn't need to bring anything else.

However, Henry still took out the money bag provided by the bank from that old backpack Tang Mu had given him. After taking out a few bills of small change, he placed the entire bag on the bar counter.

"John, this is my payment from last time. Find a place to store it for me. If you need to use it, just take it."

The old man said with a look of disgust, "Fuck, why didn't you deposit those bills in the bank? Why insist on carrying them around everywhere?"

"When you picked me up, you saw me in my birthday suit. Do you think a guy like me would have a bank account or the documents to open one? I'm going to get those things today."

"Fuck, then why not deposit them into that damn account today?"

"I already withdrew the cash, and a fee was deducted. Do you think I'm so stupid that I'd hand the money over to those vampires again just to get charged another fee when I need to withdraw it later?"

"Anyway, I don't think you're smart enough to matter, you fool who can't even tell the difference between Scotch and Bourbon."

"The first time I ate shit, how was I supposed to know that was the taste of shit? You're making things difficult for me, old man."

"Anyway, I don't want to touch your money; it smells like fish."

"If it smells, it's the good smell of king crab. If I don't ask you, am I supposed to take it on the boat? That would be even more troublesome. Or leave it in the car? That's practically giving it to thieves. You know how chaotic that town down south is."

As a dockside town that sends out boats during the crab season, even though its scale doesn't compare to those large fishing docks, this period always attracts people who want to make money to the town.

And these people's methods of making money weren't limited to boarding crab boats. Some ran scams targeting the crew; others set up traps to cheat people. Of course, there were plenty of petty thieves who occasionally moonlighted as robbers.

So Henry never thought about leaving the money in the car; that would be asking for trouble.

Understanding that Henry spoke the truth, Old John said impatiently, "Fuck, what a troublesome guy. Put it next to the cash register; I'll put it in the safe in a moment."

"Thanks." Taking up the emptied old backpack, Henry walked out the door.

In late October, the outdoor temperature in Alaska was enough to freeze a person's testicles until they shrank, even if wearing a heavy coat and cotton pants.

Although Henry possessed a superhuman constitution and was immune to cold and heat, he could still distinguish between cold and warm. In this weather, he could function normally even shirtless, but there was no need to act so abnormal in front of outsiders.

So he still followed the crowd, wearing the clothes most people wore when going out in this kind of weather.

When it came to driving himself, he didn't care about speed limits or safe driving issues. He directly focused his enhanced senses on the road ahead, and knowing there was no traffic for a long stretch in front, he pressed the accelerator almost to the floor.

The 1965 Cadillac DeVille he bought from Tang Mu, although a twenty-five-year-old car, had been maintained very thoroughly by that old guy, and the vehicle had never been in a major accident. So the condition was quite good.

On this two-lane highway, the speed could easily exceed one hundred kilometers per hour. Although the road surface had some ice, the tire grip was still sufficient.

At least with the assistance of Henry's super senses, this Cadillac ran smoothly on the highway. Using even less time than last time, just over two hours, he arrived at the southern town of the crab season.

Henry first headed to the dock, preparing to meet up with Old George.

If they could set sail, he would call Tang Mu to tell him to wait until they returned to Huigang to get the documents. If they couldn't sail, he would go directly to find Old Tang Mu.

In the rest area outside the dock management office, Henry spotted Old George and the other crew members at a glance, including the mutant young man he had saved once last time.

However, counting carefully, one of the old crew members who had boarded last time was missing. Instead, the mutant young man had found a mutant companion.

This big guy was probably over two meters tall, and his weight was likely around two hundred kilograms, truly a little giant. The reason it was obvious he was also a mutant was because his arms were disproportionately thick.

Have you ever seen someone whose arms are thicker than their legs? That's exactly what this guy looked like.

Because his arm proportions were so special, even though his clothes came in corresponding sizes, he wore them as sleeveless shirts. Even though the weather in Alaska was so cold, his two arms were bare.

Although Henry was the last to arrive, it was still about ten minutes before the agreed time, so he wasn't technically late. However, seeing that everyone had gathered, George didn't insist on waiting; instead, he stood up and said:

"First, let me tell everyone two things. First, I contacted the Annie No. 21 via radio. Their crabbing progress is a bit slow; they are scheduled to enter the port in two days."

"So in two days, we will gather here at the same time. After the Annie No. 21 enters the port and unloads its cargo, we will take over the maintenance work and replenish supplies. Any problems?"

The group answered in twos and threes: "No problem, boss." "Sure."...

"The second thing is that an old guy went to be the captain on another boat, so we found another 'Little Green'. This big guy has great strength; I've seen him lift a crab pot by himself. However, he's a bit slow, so everyone please take care of him."

"Oh, welcome, welcome." "Great strength is good. Please help out with the work on the boat."...

On a crab boat, 'Little Green' had no human rights; he didn't even have the qualification to be called by name. So no one asked the big guy's name.

As for being welcomed because he had enough strength, no one cared about his mutant identity; this was very normal.

Because in the work on a crab boat, the most dangerous thing was the swinging of the hoisted crab pots. If someone got hit by one, losing half their life wasn't surprising.

Like Henry's personal experience last time, where someone was dragged and thrown into the sea, this was a common type of accident. Having a guy with enough strength could indeed prevent many accidents.

Actually, if it came to comparing strength, Henry was confident he wouldn't lose to a mutant. But since his appearance was still within the normal human range, there was really no need to expose himself unnecessarily. So he, like everyone else, just welcomed the newly joined 'Little Green'.
