Chapter 26: Legal Identity

~7 min read 1,336 words

Actually, Henry hadn't waited long; Tang Mu's conversation with the guests ended quickly.

As for how long they had been talking before that, Henry didn't know. He only knew that when he entered, Tang Mu's conversation with the guests was nearly over.

This caused Henry's delayed super-hearing to catch only one person saying something like "find the target ASAP" to Tang Mu.

In fact, if Henry wanted to search the noise memories in his Super Brain to reconstruct the conversation between Tang Mu and the guests that he had previously ignored, it wasn't impossible.

However, he didn't have that much curiosity. Although gossip is human nature, eating melons is only interesting when it involves scandal, blood, or sex. What's the point of eavesdropping on a business negotiation? He wasn't planning to be a corporate spy anyway.

Once the conversation inside ended, the two guests didn't stay long; they walked straight out, preparing to leave.

Henry didn't pretend to be completely buried in his magazine, nor did he keep staring at them after they came out.

He simply followed normal human habits: looked up and glanced over upon hearing the sound, then immediately looked back at the magazine.

The two, however, wore scowling faces as if the whole world owed them money. Even when walking past Henry, they deliberately stared at him for a moment, trying to link this face to their target.

Although Henry didn't look up at them, his senses were quite clear about such actions.

Especially one person's eyes, which opened and closed vertically once, like a bird's nictitating membrane. This actually startled him, though it didn't show on the surface.

Another mutant. What the hell is going on in this world...

After the two strange guests walked out the door, Tang Mu's voice finally sounded at the right moment: "Hey, Henry, you damn well finally showed up. Come into my office."

Putting the magazine back in his hand, Henry walked into Tang Mu's office. He saw the other person tidying up the wine glasses left by the previous group of guests, then serving Henry a cup of hot coffee and gesturing for the newcomer to sit.

Not caring whether there was still residual warmth from the previous guests on the chair, Henry plopped down.

Acting rough and careless in such a small place is because not many people actually notice such small details. Henry noticed this only due to the influence of his past life before transmigrating.

The so-called otaku has some degree of mysophobia regarding private domains. Of course, they also restrain themselves from trampling on others'. That's why they notice such small things.

After settling down, Tang Mu took a large brown paper bag out of the drawer and pushed it in front of Henry, saying: "The documents are inside, go through them. If you have questions, ask directly."

Henry dumped everything out of the paper bag.

Basically, except for the passport thing, except for the cover color, global standards are about the same, and they look just like the ones he saw before transmigrating, which is why he could recognize them.

The other things are words I recognize, but I don't get what these things are used for.

Seeing Henry's confused expression, Tang Mu politely pointed at the documents while explaining.

He sorted the items one by one, pointing and saying: "I see you recognize the passport. Then this is your Social Security card and related documents. You are an American citizen; here is the birth certificate.

"Taking this thing means you have a bunch of taxes to pay. For details, consult an accountant; he will tell you how much to pay. This is considered protection money for the US government, maintaining your legal identity.

"So don't spend all your money. If you can't pay taxes, it's a more serious matter than breaking the law. The IRS is more difficult to deal with than the FBI. They won't beat you to death, but they won't rule out squeezing you dry to sell you off to pay the taxes.

"Then here is the work permit and proof. Considering you might have directly cashed the checks before, I took the initiative to find Old George for you and issued a salary certificate.

"In the future, it's best to make a copy before cashing a check, for tax filing purposes. Then here is the driver's license, and the vehicle transfer documents. The license plate is also given to you, so no need to change it.

"All of these are legal documents; even if the FBI comes to check, there's no problem. So if you want to do some bad things, don't ruin this identity. Some things inside are not easy to handle."

Henry hesitated a bit and asked: "Is it really that simple?"

"This is Alaska. Except for here, only overseas territories like Hawaii or Saipan make it a bit easier to get these things. But Hawaii, as a tourist destination, has many eyes watching. Instead, this godforsaken place where not even a bird lays eggs is where no one wants to come and verify anything.

Tang Mu explained: "The government has some preferential policies to maintain these enclaves not bordering the mainland. But in actual operation, it's not as rigorous as on the mainland.

"However, when I say I'm not afraid of the FBI checking, it's because these documents are all legal. But if they insist on digging for flaws, there are plenty to grab. So never put yourself in that situation, understand what I mean?"

"Understood." Henry put away the ID cards and document materials while confirming what they were for.

Just as Henry finished putting everything away, Tang Mu switched to small-talk mode and asked: "Are you taking this bag of stuff onto George's boat?"

"If you feed it to the king crabs, I can't help you reissue it. Even if you want to start over, the data is already in the files, which will be a bit troublesome, you know."

Henry put down the brown paper bag, took a sip of coffee, and said: "I met George this morning. He said Annie won't return to Huigang until the 21st, two more days. No work today. With him taking care of it, I don't want to look for anyone else's boat."

Tang Mu agreed: "That's right, being with the right person is more important than earning more. It's just that young people nowadays don't quite agree with this point."

"Ha. In the end, it's just for money. If that so-called 'right person' just wants to trick people into working for free with talk of loyalty and a promising future, would you be willing?"

"That's impossible. Just like you said, in the end, it's just for this damn money." Tang Mu changed the subject and asked: "If you have nothing to do today, is there a job you want to take? Earn some extra cash."

"What job?"

"Help me go to a place to confirm something; just take a look. The place isn't far; you can make a round trip today."

"Hmm, does it have anything to do with those two people who went out before me?"

"Maybe, maybe not." Tang Mu answered very ambiguously.

"Then forget it. I have a hunch that getting involved with them will be troublesome."

Tang Mu didn't persuade further, raised both hands, and said: "Fine, that's your freedom of choice."

Henry said as if offhand: "Didn't expect you to also have a side job selling information."

"In this backwater, if you don't have the ability to get on a crabbing boat and want to make a living, you can only find ways to earn more. If it weren't for me getting seasick, not to mention being a professional crabber, I should have been a captain."

"Buy a boat and let trusted people run it." Henry suggested.

Tang Mu laughed and said: "The waters in here are very deep; you don't understand."
