Chapter 28: Departure
He had finally left. Henry stood by the ferry's railing, watching the headache-inducing waves of the Bai Linghai crash against this ferry, which was no light tonnage.
Though not quite as smooth as walking on flat ground, the ship's rocking was indeed far better than that small toy-like crabbing boat. So Henry felt some nostalgia for the two months of life on the crabbing boat.
He had thought about leaving Old John some money. But after sounding him out, the old man would not accept it; instead, he scolded Henry black and blue.
So Henry decided to do some repair work on that dilapidated bar.
As for what needed improvement, he certainly could not ask Old John.
In that old fellow's eyes, the bar was perfect; nothing needed changing, let alone repairing. Anyone who complained would get a good slap from him.
Henry asked the old regulars in town to see where they thought the bar needed patching up.
The suggestion to demolish and rebuild was ignored after a round of "fuck." That lousy idea, let alone Old John, would never agree; most townsfolk disagreed too.
Then Henry simply bought the materials himself, did the work himself, and left his mark on the bar.
As for whether he would return in the future, it was truly hard to say. Because this place was, after all, not home...
No one came to see him off when he left. After giving Henry a hug, Old John turned back to his own business, just as he had when sending his two sons off to fight in the Vietnam War.
The ferry's destination was Los Angeles, and the Cadillac Henry had bought from Old Tang Mu was parked right on the ferry. There were no reserved private cabins for rest; if he wanted to rest, he either had to hide inside his car or squeeze into the common cabin with everyone else.
The scheduled voyage was just over a day, less than two days. It was much slower than a plane, but not as slow as imagined.
But taking this ferry was truly not that easy.
First, he had to drive to Juneau, the capital of Alasijiazhou, to catch the large ferry heading to the mainland during this season.
Driving in heavy snow in Alasijiazhou, with no snowplows to clear the roads, was so arduous that it would truly be better not to drive at all...
So this simple journey took several days just for the driving.
Along the way, forget about motels; he had to bring his own food and water and make do in the car. Of course, gasoline had to be prepared as well.
In Alasijiazhou during this season, there was wind, there was snow, there were beautiful views, but there were no gas stations everywhere! Some stretches didn't even have paved roads.
Sometimes he could see the road on the other side of a cliff or a river, but to cross it, he had to detour a long way to find a makeshift bridge or gentler terrain to pass.
Facing this situation, with no one in sight, Henry tried his Kryptonian flight ability for the first time, lifting the car along with him.
Surprisingly, the flight ability was not as hard to train as imagined. After a few jumps, Henry mastered this practical ability. As for strength, that went without saying; controlling the strength was actually more troublesome.
The reason he hadn't practiced this ability before was entirely because he had been fooled by the TV series "Smallville" in his memories before crossing over. For ten whole seasons, our Big Super finally learned to fly and put on the red-and-blue battle suit.
So he subconsciously assumed this ability was hard to acquire, which is why he never tried it.
But when truly needed, the mastery speed was much faster than imagined. It could be said this was the part that surprised Henry the most after crossing over.
Relying on this cheat-like method of slicing through obstacles like watermelons, and occasionally using it to pass some snow-covered sections, Henry finally drove the car to the destination, Juneau.
Actually, the port where the crabbing boats set sail also had a ferry. After all, small planes and ships were the main modes of transportation in Alasijiazhou; cars could reach very few places.
However, the problem of the sea surface freezing meant there were no ferries available during this period.
Moreover, ferries capable of transporting vehicles were scarce. Some even suggested shipping the car via cargo ship while the person took the ferry, transferring at a larger port.
But no matter which method was used, one would have to wait until spring next year.
It could be said that the departure time Henry chose for himself was asking for trouble. No wonder, when he mentioned it in the bar, a bunch of people were holding back laughter, looking like they were enjoying a show.
Considering the actual difficulty of driving and wanting to transport the vehicle to Los Angeles, Henry more than once wanted to fly back to town and punch Tang Mu, that self-righteous old white man, until he exploded.
The reason this guy gave sounded reasonable at first, but behind it was likely his own desire to change cars, find a sucker to take the old one, and make a profit himself.
If he weren't burdened by the car, taking a small plane from a nearby small airport and transferring to a commercial flight at a larger airport, he would have arrived in Los Angeles long ago, right?
Anyway, he had truly learned his lesson this time. Those old guys, who seemed harmless but were actually malicious, he had thought they would take care of him, the junior, but instead, he was tricked into falling into a pit.
Even Old Tang Mu, just because he was introduced by George, was not worthy of one hundred percent trust. That old white man still had his own little schemes.
So a friend of a friend is not necessarily a trustworthy friend.
This lesson that his pre-crossing self knew, after more than twenty long years, was once again deeply experienced through his own body, making him realize the treachery of human hearts.
Although this did not look like a life-threatening fatal joke. But without Kryptonian abilities, he would either meet disaster outside or have to return and face everyone's mockery.
Actually, in places Henry couldn't see, the townsfolk had indeed opened a betting pool, wagering on how long it would take for him to turn back and obediently wait until spring.
After more than seven days with no sign of his return, quite a few people believed Henry had met disaster outside and thus could not return.
Only Old John firmly believed Henry was still advancing toward his destination, which was why he hadn't come back.
Whether that little guy had died outside or reached his destination, the elders in town had no ability to search too far away.
They could only search nearby, then go to the small town south where the crabbing boats departed to inquire, and then the matter was shelved.
Their physical fitness simply could not handle searching outside in such sub-zero heavy snow. Unless they wanted to increase the number of casualties.
So they could only pray that the little guy traveling far in Alasijiazhou during the heavy snow had indeed overcome all difficulties and bravely moved forward.
No one could imagine how shamelessly cheating it was to use heat vision to clear the way while lifting the car to fly.
Anyway, being in the vast and sparsely populated Alasijiazhou, with heavy snow covering his tracks, Henry treated it as practicing his Kryptonian abilities in a no-man's-land. After all, he couldn't find a chance to practice in the small town before.
Cutting through thorns and brambles like this, Henry arrived at his destination in the heavy snow.
Speaking of which, when he drove the car to the port, the port staff thought he was just a local resident. No one could imagine he came from a small fishing town in central Alasijiazhou.
